Our GM is in charge of the roster but Rex had strong influences over who was chosen. Do you understand what that means or should I put it in simpler terms? Here's an old article to help you understand better but one last tidbit. When Mangini was coach the Jets drafted 3 offensive players and 2 defensive players in the first round. 3 are complete studs and 2 were busts 60% success. With Rex as coach they chose 1 offensive player and 6 defensive. 4 are busts (including Sanchez) and 3 are studs 42% success. You can't possibly think this is a coincidence. There's more to being a coach than coaching. This isn't hs football. http://nypost.com/2013/12/04/rex-ryan-has-contributed-to-jets-offensive-woes/
Oh stop this shit. 2008 may have been one of the worst examples of coaching and game planning I've ever seen, and why "Mangenius" got shitcanned......then continued his "Genius" in a brief stint in Cleveland. which btw, Mangini was also at the helm for one of the worst JETS drafts I can remember. Gholston (worst football player I've ever seen) and trading into the 1st rd for Dustin Keller.
While Mangini's coaching and leading the team was questionable, the team he built was for real. The '08 draft was pretty bad, but he was the guy responsible for drafting Harris, Revis, Mangold, and Brick in previous drafts. They then brought in Faneca, Woody, and Thomas Jones, which eventually gave us the #1 rushing offense by 2009. Rex then took a decent defense and schemed it produce better imo and the offense was plug and play for Mark Sanchez, he already had a great offensive line and running game to help him win. All it took was couple good receivers and we became a top 5 NFL team for two seasons. In my opinion, Tanny ruined the team more than anyone.
I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but rather trying to understand. How is it that 2 picks in the draft would completely take you off Mac's bandwagon? Do you really mean that, or was that just hyperbole? I can understand questioning moves and becoming skeptical or less supportive of Mac and his moves, but not totally losing faith in him. I didn't know Lee all that well, but knew him well enough to know that he has a ton of potential is very fast, has a high character, and plays big in big games. While I was disappointed that we didn't get one of the players I wanted more, I completely understood why Mac took him and thought it a good pick, and probably the best he could do under the circumstances. I didn't understand the Hack pick at all, but trusted Mac because I believed in him. While my belief and trust in Mac wasn't complete, it was strong enough to give him the benefit of the doubt. I decided that since Mac had a scouting and personnel background, is actually working in the NFL, and has done a very good job so far with the Jets, that I must be missing something with regards to Hack, and I set out to try to learn more about Hack. As I read more about Hack, I grew to understand why taking him was a very good, if not great, choice. It is an appropriate risk. My trust in Mac was further confirmed by the fact that he tried to trade down before taking Hack and tried to trade down at many points in the draft, but couldn't find a willing trade partner or the right value. Conversely, while I loved that Mac valued Laremy Tunsil and the LT position so highly, I was concerned when I read that he tried to trade up for him, just as I was concerned that he tried to trade up to the top of the draft for either Wentz or Goff. I was concerned because this team still has holes due to Tanny's constant trading up, we only had 6 picks, and I didn't think we could afford to trade up. That still concerns me. It's reassuring since he was trying to get a franchise QB and was trying to get what he thinks is a topnotch LT prospect (2 of the only times I would ever consider trading up), and that he didn't overpay to move up, and didn't jump at Dallas' lowball trade up offer, it's still a bit of a concern that he would trade up. It's also been a bit of a concern for me that he has traded away a number of draft picks for older players, but as long as he gets the results that he has with Marshall and others (and hopefully will with Clady), I can understand and get on board with those moves. I think having faith or trust in someone/something means that we much consciously choose to trust and have faith in that person in spite of consequences or what appears to be evidence to the contrary.
Shell and Burris don't thrill me either ..so thats 4 picks. We needed a top OL couldn't get Tunsil so we wait several rounds for Shell . There are plenty of CB on the roster already but we take another one ??. If being off the bandwagon is being skeptical and not a FO homer then thats where I am at Mac is a former Scout so I hope he gets it right
I never said mangini was a good coach, I said he put together a good team. The 2008 draft was a bad class all the way around but the fact is if I had to choose between mangini drafting for me or Rex, I'd take mangini every time. I'd take Mac over either one in a heartbeat.
I miss the days of truly great teams like this. I wish they'd figure out a way to allow teams to keep a certain number of great players they drafted without counting against the cap. The salary cap blows. It doesn't create parity and it waters down the product.
Maybe I'm just romanticizing it because I grew up watching these great 49ers and Cowboy's dynasties but it was much more interesting to me following the league when teams got to keep there players and have an identity over the course of a decade. The Bills were another one even if they never won the big one. Even as a jets fan I appreciated the greatness I witnessed. it's hard to build a well rounded team and groom home grown talent when you know you can only keep 2 or 3 great players. now it just seems like it's all about finding the franchise qb gem which is more random.
Just curious but how could Jets have taken Lee later? He was widely considered a top 20 pick, most didn't even think he would last to 20. Did you think he was going to magically last til our 2nd round pick? Whether you like the pick or not is irrelevant but the fact is there is zero chance we could've gotten him later so it was pick him at 20 or lose him, obviously the Jets didn't want to lose him.
I don't miss those days at all. If your team wasn't the "great" team, you knew your team had little or no chance. What fun is that? I absolutely hate the Cowboys. It wouldn't bother me in the least if someone blew up that stadium when it was empty and the franchise had to fold. At least I enjoyed the 49ers with Walsh, Montana & Young, and the Steelers with Bradshaw, but I think it makes things a lot less interesting for NFL fans. I hated the Bills too, and knew my Jets had no chance as long as they had that dynasty. No, the salary cap doesn't create parity by itself. Nothing can. If a team has a horrible GM and/or HC, it won't matter much whether there's a salary cap or not, but the cap helps level the playing field, and at least gives every team a chance. It also helps to keep GMs from wildly overpaying for a FA to the extent that it kills that team in the future, and helps keep salaries down somewhat. The salaries the players are getting these days is insane. I do think the cap should be larger and the roster should be larger on game day. It seems crazy to me to have someone on the team, but ineligible to play in a game.
Omg it's like banging my head against a fucking wall. I said the hc has a say in who gets drafted. You doubted that fact. I pointed out that our draft habits changed when we switched coaches to prove my point. I don't give a fuck if Mac drafts d in the first round for the next 50 years. The point is the hc sways the GM. Mangini drafted well and build a team that Rex took to the afc championship 2 years in a row. Rex drafted a team that got worse every year and was 4-12 his last year. Do you understand now?
the whole 'team that Mangini built' is a complete cop out imo.. Mangini's job wasn't GM, Mangini didn't do shit with the talent he had, and there was a lot of new personnel that came in while Rex was here including the QB. it's like saying Bowles just won with the team Rex built. not true in either case.
1. If Jets draft well, the HC gets the credit. 2. If Jets draft poorly, the GM gets the shit. 3. Rex getting shit for the poor draft has been the recent anomaly. Have at it, folks. [LOL] P.S. I find it rather confusing that the HCs get such a huge say in draft, but not FA? So the recent Jets squad filled with expensive, aging vets [Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, et al] - whose work is it? If it belongs to the HC, then what is the job description of GM? Writing out checks to the players? [LOL] P.S. I think EPL model of a franchise should fit VERY well here in NFL; there, the HC manages all the contract AND the roster. I don't think GM exists there. We don't need to pay 6-figure salary to a man so he can write a check anyway. Amirite or what?
