3 years 12 million the cost is certainly great for the talent. and i love that he is a pass catcher out of the backfield as well as solid pass protection. my main issue with this move is we now have another guy on the wrong side of 30 on a multi year deal. to me this is a bit short sighted. id rather have gone after someone like asiata, who probably comes even cheaper and who might be more of a long term solution. solid signing, but i worry about the long term impact
We always want young, up and coming talent but the truth is we are built to win now. Marshall is turning 32, Revis is turning 31, Harris is 32, Mangold is 32, Ferguson is turning 33. These are all the key players for this team that won't be giving up top flight production much longer (Brick has already declined). You have to surround these guys with other guys that can help you win NOW.
Can people stop saying he's on the wrong side of 30 He is 30. He's literally not on one side or another
i like everything about this deal outside of fortes age and downward trend. i think he will be good for us next year, but after that? i think longterm, a cheaper younger option made more sense but this certainly is also alot better then giving ivory or cj anderson bigger money
the fact that we have so many 30+ year olds making big money is the exact reason why im nervous adding another in forte. you dont make "win now" moves with no QB and a team that didnt make the playoffs last year. we should be supplimenting those vets with some younger players. I also dont need some stud up and coming talent. give me 3 young cheap guys and sort it out that way by comittee. we need to rebuild our offensive line or the back wont matter much anyhow. i think it is a bad idea to bring in a lot of win now players to go with the core we have. brick has been on a steady decline. mangold has had trouble staying healthy. forte has been on a steady decline. harris is becoming more and more of a 2 down player. revis isnt a god anymore. fitz isnt even signed right now. to me that doesnt scream legit contender that you want to throw win now talent at
if you want to be technical, the day after you turn 30, you are on the wrong side of 30. your only 30 for one day. but lets not get in some argument of semantics and vocabulary.... the crux is this: 2035 career carries. a pretty steady decline the last several seasons: carries: 289-266-218 yards: 1339 - 1038 - 898 yard per carry: 4.6 - 3.9- 4.1 TD: 9-6-4 missed 3 games to injury last season im not saying he falls off a cliff next year. i can see him even bouncing back a bit... but i dont see him lasting much longer. and it wouldnt be at all a suprise if his decline stayed steady and the missed games increased.
Forte will definitely help if he still has as much life in his legs as the rest of you think he does. I still think our OL is in need of serious upgrading and that we need a true, two-way TE if our offense is going to reach its full potential.
Asiata isn't even on the same planet as Matt Forte. If he's healthy, he will be an excellent back when it comes to running the football, catching and etc. Depth is essential however, I hope we can get Powell back because then the defense won't know whats coming in comparison to Ivory. Also draft a back this year and next year. In the later rounds.
No, you misunderstand what it means. The "right" side of 30 is 29 and younger. The "wrong" side of 30 IS 30 and older. There's something mysterious about that age, but a lot of players suddenly become physically brittle and their abilities can seem to vanish overnight once they turn 30.
Forte is an upgrade over Ivory in Gailey's offense, and I see us moving away from the big bruising running game. Forte is more of a compliment to Powell than a replacement. If Powell signs elsewhere, I still think we look for a RB in the draft like Prosise, Ervin, or Lasco. We still need to groom some young talent at RB.
Asiatta also isnt on the same planet with how much we have to pay him and how old he is. its not like we are the packers or cardinals where we are some win now team 1 piece away. it also doesnt need to be asiata. just give me some young cheap options
From ESPN: Best fit Running back Matt Forte is 30 and might not be equipped to take 250 carries in a season anymore. But he is a unique asset, something the New York Jets recognized as they locked him down moments after the market opened. Forte might be the best receiving back in the NFL, and his ability to run sophisticated routes and make difficult catches -- back shoulder, fingertips in traffic, you name it -- will extend his career beyond the point of most running backs. Jets running backs made 94 catches in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's scheme last season, and if used correctly, Forte could approach that number himself in 2016.
so he's guaranteed for 2 seasons.. 4M per, with some incentives to get a little more, and we likely make a clean break after the 2 years. great deal! we haven't had a receiving threat out of the backfield since maybe Tomlinson, and i think Forte might have more gas left than Tomlinson did at acquisition.
30 is the wrong side of 30 in the NFL. But Forte is the kind of 30 you take a chance on. Doesn't fumble much and is a multi-threat player on offense. The decline in numbers was at least partly based on the missed 3 games in October and November. He was playing well again by the end of the season.
