Sure, but they're not in the habit of paying top dollar for their top players to stay (sans qb). They'd rather have good players that play great for less money than pay a huge contract for one person. Even the Pats last year who paid Revis a mint did so for a one year contract. When his price got too high they let him walk. The other dude said that we won't pay top dollar for top talent and that's why we don't win it all. I disagree. Hell, the Packers top talent gives the Packers a hometown discount. Beluga and Nelson both left money on the table to stay. If Mo were to do that it would be a clear sign to me that times are changing.
I hope Mo sees things like that. Truly, if winning is all that mattered to him, he would help keep his quality team mates around. If we were to lose Harrison or lose him and possibly Richardson later (who I definitely want to keep a while), his stats will go down as well, giving him a flop status after a big money deal. If we keep this line together, and the players and our GM make sure they are together, they will probably be very very special for 5-8 years. Our defense would be anchored up front where it counts most at an elite level. Maybe 85 Chicago Bears badass!?
For what it's worth, Denver's defense is #1 and due entirely to Wade Phillips coming in and changing them to a 3-4. They have the players up front to play a 4-3, but Wade saw it differently and switched tings up. Rex did the exact same going into Buffalo with lesser results (except against the Jets!). So discussion earlier about moving to a 4-3 to keep Mo might not be the best solution, scheme wise.
At this point having 3 top flight 3-4 DE's is a luxery considering only two would be on the field at the same time (in base personel). I wonder how many snaps all 3 were on the field together and what the down and distance was... I love mo and he has strong leadership characteristics that must be considered when looking at contract value. My guess is he gets franchised this year or traded
http://panicbutton.sportsblog.com/p...oakland-raiders-are-high-on-mo-wilkerson.html Raiders are high on Mo Wilk. At this point, you cannot let him go to FA. If the Raiders get Mo and pair him along with Khalil Mack, Cooper and Derek Carr - our chances of winning the AFC will be slightly diminished.
Raiders are the one team I don't want to see him on. They are on the rise, and I absolutely hate the Raiders.
I really think the Cowboys are the team most likely to make Mo a big offer. They want to part with Hardy in the worst way and their run D could use him in a big way, particularly given that he is likely to be a penetrating 3T if used that way and a rare penetrating 4-3 NT if used that way.
The Raiders apparently already inquired about Mo last year. The Cowboys have no cap space for Mo, unless the Jets agree to a trade. The chances of them getting equal value is absolutely 0. I knew this wasn't going to end well. Chances of the Raiders getting Mo vs the Cowboys is a lot better IMO. We will be on the outside looking in, when it comes to the AFC Race.
The Cowboys can make cap room by cutting Brandon Carr (no picks since 2013 and a nearly $14M cap number this year - Cowboys save $6.3M by cutting), Barry Church (or renegotiate - $4M). They can renegotiate Tyron Smith to push more money out to later years in the deal and save up $5-6M on the cap, they can renegotiate Tyrone Crawford and get some space there. They have a lot of wiggle room and Tony Romo isn't getting any younger. Jerry Jones has to be thinking about how to make that defense better so he has a shot at a Lombardi before Romo goes.
What's our compensation in this deal? We aren't getting their first round pick for Mo. It's almost like no one cares if this guy walks to another team and helps them win another SB. What is up with the Jets letting great players go? They almost always win a SB with their next team. Riggins, Farrior, Vilma, and Revis. Meanwhile we are barely struggling to stay above water. I guess you guys get your wish with Mo and Snacks. It's things like this that truly make me sick to my stomach.
Everybody cares. Very few people think we can afford to pay an interior DL close to $100M over the next 6-7 seasons and still compete with the other systemic problems on the team and several other star-caliber DL/prospects already on the roster. 9-7 isn't going to cut it in the AFC East and that's what the Texans got in a weak AFC South after giving J.J. Watt, who is a classic pass rusher who can also play inside, that kind of deal.
If the Texans had a better QB, there record wouldn't be 9-7 IMO. All they had to do was draft Carr, Bridgewater or Bortles instead of Clowney. I don't think this has anything to do with Watt at all. The choices they made in the draft is the problem.
Come on now. I haven't seen a single poster that says they don't like Mo and want to trade him for that reason. In fact, several posters have said they'd rather keep Mo and trade Richardson. The only reason that we're even talking about trading Mo, is that we are strapped for cap space and he wants a big contract, which at best, the Jets will have a hard time fitting under the cap and will take a lot of maneuvering, and at worst, they won't be able to. I've said several times that I love Mo, that he's one of the few players in recent years that I wanted the Jets to draft and they actually did. He's been a great player and Jet. It's simply a numbers thing. The Jets have cap issues and they have 3 topflight 3-4 DEs. In one way it shows the flaw in going BAP in the draft. It came in handy this past season while Richardson was on suspension, and will be handy if Mo or Richardson are traded, but otherwise, it creates a situation where having all 3 is a luxury. Unfortunately, trading the most expensive one is the one that would help the team's cap situation the most.
I've seen some outlandish reasons to keep Snacks over Mo. The cap issues aren't as bad as many make it out to be. They will ALL be expensive no matter what. You will need to pay one of them a decent deal regardless. We'll see in a few weeks how this plays out. We won't get equal value back either. This is planning right into the Raiders hands, and at this juncture, wouldn't be shocked if we get nothing more than a nice 3rd round compensation pick because no team is going to give us good value for Mo. Both teams are very close in a weak AFC conference, a move like this could really swing the momentum away from 1 team and onto another.
The reason to keep Snacks over Mo is that the Jets will pay Leonard Williams, Snacks and Sheldon Richardson less combined a season than they would pay Mo over the next couple of seasons. If they're staying 3-4 the place to really invest is in finding a great pass rushing OLB and a good ILB who can cover backs and TE's over the middle. If they're going 4-3, well that raises a lot of issues. If they're staying hybrid 3-4/46, well they still really need the LB's and they mostly have the DL even if Mo leaves. I hate that Mo is going to get a top 5 contract for a DL. I love him as as a player and I think he is team-oriented and an all-around good guy. I like the fact that he's from the area and easy to root for. I like the fact that he can move around all over the front and do things. I just can't see paying even a guy like that what he's going to command in free agency from some nimwit team that wants to make a splash and will happily lose again during the regular season as long as they win the off-season. If Mo was Bruce Smith you have to keep him. If he was J.J. Watt you have to keep him. He's just not at those levels. He's the next level down and while that is a great player it's not a player to break the cap over when you have the other guys the Jets have in the equation.
There's another story out today about how bad we have drafted in recent years. Knowing our track record there is no way we should be willing to trade a pro bowl player for a draft pick... PAY THE MAN !!!!!!
