So.....Macc should be fired for going into the season with a TERRIBLE backup QB? Was there not a single vet on the scrape heap that was at least better than TERRIBLE that Macc could have brought in? If you want Macc fired, then just say it! :)

    Thanks for posting.

There is another thread where we were talking about 'dead money'. What is it? And can an active player have 'dead money'.

I figured yes, an active player can have dead money against the cap. The 507K dead money for Geno is his signing bonus spread out across his contract. It's 'dead money' against the cap even if we keep him. If he's cut, all his 'dead money' from remaining years get's accelerated to the moment he's cut. If he stays, it's just 'dead money' against that year's cap.

    Is this right?

    Geno's true dead money = $600.

I'd still like to see Geno in camp next season.
You can't throw away a QB with 2 seasons as a starter under his belt and have a kid with o experience, especially since cutting Geno really saves little.

Geno is the guy that will have one game in 4 where the defensive matchup is just right...little front 7 speed) and give you a tease...but never be solid enough to build on

Ummm... Have you seen what other teams have at the back up position?

Geno will most certainly never be a quality starter - but that doesn't mean that he can't be a quality back up.

I want Smith off the team. His mere presence is a downer.

Dan Orlavsky, Case Keenum, Scott Tolzien, Drew Stanton, Kellen Clemens, Shaun Hill...

These are a few names off of the top of my head and honestly they are all a bit of a downer. Emotional decisions have no place in business.

We need to move the goalposts on Geno. He is a shitty starter but is a good backup.

If Petty is to progress as a QB - then he needs to take the next logical step - which would be to win the back up job.
If he can't beat Geno then he clearly isn't ready to be one Fitz injury away from playing.

    Says who?

What has Geno done to prove that he isn't a shitty backup?

We have a lot of valuable players using roster spots and cap space.

Geno Smith is not one of those valuable players.

Geno has won games at the NFL level. Not many - but more than most NFL back ups.

And if you want to replace him you are going to have to to pay his replacement. The odds are at this point that we'd be paying a lesser back up more money.

Or anointing Petty before he's ready. If he's ready let him beat out Geno in camp. I see no reason to cut Geno before that happens.

Smith's presence is a downer since he's a reminder of all the awful things he did to this team, we know is ceiling, and it would be disheartening as a player for the Jets to think the people running the team think he deserves a roster spot with the possibility that he could actually get into games. It is not an emotional decision. It is a realistic and fact based one.

I also agree there is NOTHING to suggest he would be a positive as a backup.

Who would you want to replace him with that would cost the same or less but also gives us a better chance of winning if Fitz were to get hurt?

Ryan Mallet, Zack Mettenberger, Colt McCoy and others are all better than Geno.

Sure. There are better backups. But the question is - how do you get a better backup than Geno at the same or lesser cost?

    If it's possible I'm on board. I just don't think it's possible.

That being the case I can't get on board with dumping him and being a worse team for it.

If Geno can't handle the backup job and Petty isn't ready to take it over we should not be risking a season with either one starting just to save $1-2 mil of cap space.

If Petty is ready for the #2 job we can cut Geno loose and bring in a rookie to groom for the future.

I am probably in the slim minority here, but I wouldn't mind seeing what Geno could do in this system with these weapons.. Think he could be very successful if you ask me.. At the same time I am very high on Petty and I like the fact that he is sitting and learning before being thrown into the fray..

I may be wrong but I am confident that Mac is comfortable with Geno as a backup if Petty isn't ready yet. He's familiar with the offense, he's cheap and he has starting experience. I'm sure that if a reasonable upgrade presents itself Mac will pull the trigger.

What I don't believe is that Mac wants Geno gone because Bad Geno haunts us fans. That isn't smart business.

Let's be patient and let training camp play out. In a perfect world Petty mops the floor with Geno and grabs the opportunity to be a backup this season.

Geno is more than capable as a backup QB. I wouldn't write the kid off yet.
