He didn't just have a rookie QB playing ... he had the worst starting QB in the league playing. And he went to the AFC Championship (and had a lead at halftime). If Rex had Fitzpatrick instead of Sanchez, he'd have two rings right now. Now, you can say that's his own fault (for insisting on Sanchez), but it is what it is.
"No", Sanchez wasn't the worst starting QB in the league? or "No", Fitzpatrick isn't much better than Sanchez? or "No", both? I do. He'd have two rings. Sure ... right after Idzik intentionally sabotaged him (getting himself fired in the process because it was so obvious).
I seriously can't see how this can even be argued..Rex did miracles with Sanchez and Idzik absolutely destroyed the team. As Larry Holmes would say, Bowles can't even carry Rex's jockstrap. Maybe he will some day but his first year showed he can't manage a game to save his ass.
Rex is in his 6th year in the league, still making the same mistakes, took the Bills and made them worse albeit with the same record. Bowles as a rookie head coach took a 4-12 team with an improved roster and improved them to 10-6. He made some mistakes along the way and hopefully will learn from them unlike dumb-ass Rex. Teams can be dangerous when they have nothing to play for and the coach can do dumb shit like go for it on 4th down half the time. The Bills were playing loose on their home turf in a divisional game against a team that was playing too tight. They outplayed the Jets but it doesn't mean Rex is the better coach. There isn't enough data available to fully evaluate Bowles yet. If only 9-7 was good enough to make the playoffs this year like it was Rex's rookie year.
I'd like to see the argument supporting your position, especially after yesterday. Two coaches, same game; one playing for pride and respect, the other playing for a playoff spot. One team ready to go, one team anything but ready. Dropped balls, blown coverages, stupid penalties, questionable game planning on both sides of the ball. Score after the first 15:15, 13 - 0. Not hard for me to argue in favor of Ryan.
Rex used to make guarantees about upcoming seasons & games. He's learned his lesson. Now he's making guarantees about last season.
Besides beat your team twice this year and last year. Rex was a hot commodity last year as it was the belief around the league that Idzik handcuffed him with horrible roster moves. I didn't buy it. Anyways, I actually registered for this site to congratulate you on making the playoffs because I loved Fitzy and to curse you for letting Rex go. I just assumed you'd win because a third of our team was comprised of backups. Unfortunately, the real Fitz we all witnessed here for 3 years showed up at a bad time yesterday. I was pretty indifferent to who won because I hate the Jets and Steelers about the same. My hatred as a Bills fan is the Patriots, Isis, Dolphins, Cowboys, and then a toss up between the Jets and Steelers. My hatred for the Dolphins dates back to the 90's when you guys, the Pats, and Colts were bottom feeders in the division. I hated the Rex signing when we finished 4th on defense and 1st in sacks last year. Under Ryan, that number dropped drastically with basically the same personnel and we finished 19th overall and 31st in sacks. Why sign a defensive head coach that pushed a great defensive coordinator (Jim Schwartz) out the door? Why sign a coach whose team we just destroyed 38-3 in Detroit? I was hoping for Hue Jackson and retaining Schwartz. Rex then put his used salesman approach to fire up the entire city and of course when the real season began he went back to the old Rex whose teams performance couldn't match his mouth. Besides yesterday, he had trouble with game management, installing discipline, and blamed two non challenges on the jumbotron in KC. I'm not making that up. You guys are much better off with Bowels, but I suggest drafting or acquiring a QB because Fitz will only get you so far.
Sure, and the Patsies can't beat Philly or Miami, and the Broncos lost to the Raiders and Indy, the Steelers lost to the Ravens and the Bengals lost to the Texans. The AFC is a bit of a mess right now. The Patsies basically have no offense left, the Broncos don't have a QB (or they have two, who knows), the Bengals don't have a QB, the Steelers don't have a defense. We were hot going into the last week and at this time of year, a ferocious defense can really make a huge difference. Plus Marshall and Decker are basically playing like the best wideout combination in the league right now. As an aside, the list of teams who lost in the last two weeks is shocking. Basically _every_ team other than Seattle lost in the last three weeks, it looks like. Our loss was just one of many,
Idzik took over in 2013. The team started falling apart 2 years prior. Can't blame it all on Idzik. How do you know he would have 2 rings? Sanchez played his best football for the Jets in the playoffs.
So in that case is Dan Campbell a better coach than Bellicheck? I mean Bellicheck had home field advantage to play for and Campbell was in the same spot as Rex. You can't judge two coaches on head to head matchups. Judge them over the course of a full season. The Jets are much better run under Bowles than they were with Rex IMO. The team just looks better to me. Rex could never build an offense and relied so heavily on his defense that it hurt him in the long run. He was a defensive coordinator who had the title of HC.
So in your opinion "the Jets are much better run" and "the team just looks better" under Bowles. That's it? You said "Bowles is a better coach than Rex. It's very hard to argue otherwise" but you came up with no argument at all, nothing but a feeling, and now say you can't judge two coaches on head to head matchups? I'll bet you could if the Jets had beaten Buffalo twice this year. I was expecting a lot more from somebody making such a strong statement.
I gave arguments in other posts. Also, if you go back and read I said that saying "its very hard to argue otherwise" was probably a little strong. And incorrect, I would never judge 2 coaches on head to head matchups, regardless of who wins. If Bowles beat Rex twice but the Jets went 2-14 I wouldn't be tooting Bowles horn over Rex. I judge a coach on a 16 game season. Not one game where people have a tendency to overreact. Rex never built an offense, he was a defensive oriented coach. He's a glorified coordinator. He's not a head coach. It's all about his defense. He admitted as much during his time here at certain points, remember last year when Rex had the defensive channel turned on his headset when his offense still had the ball in a crucial point in Green Bay? Rex had double digit win seasons once, Bowles did it in his first year. And yes Rex went to two AFC Title games but the team withered away around him. He lost the locker room in 2011, he hypes up players to no end and puts targets on his teams back. First thing he did in Buffalo was guarantee the playoffs. That got old real fast in New York, and it will get old in Buffalo. I loved it at first but after a while it gets tiresome. I don't want my HC doing those things. Rex comes with a lot of baggage. Great defensive mind, not much else there IMO. I don't want my HC to have a lot of baggage, I don't want my HC to be a sound bite, and somebody who the media is going to fixate on. Give me Bowles. Rex has accomplished very little in this league, and his best years were a long time ago now. He's living off of his first 2 seasons where he took a ready made team and got to the title game in back to back years. Since then...he's 12 games under .500 as a coach. 2011- 8-8, lost the team, blew a chance at the playoffs 2012- 6-10, awful team 2013- 8-8 2014- 4-12 2015- 8-8
bills had a worse record this year and a large regression in defense ratings with the same personnel also your star player (williams) no longer wants to play there. only thing that changed was rex coming in. jets went 4-12 last year and are now 10-6 with bowles. anyone can win on any given sunday but over the course of a season the records show the better team.
The Buffalo News reports Bills owner Terry Pegula told coach Rex Ryan and GM Doug Whaley they will be fired if Buffalo does not reach the playoffs next season. Looks like 2016 could be the end of Rex Ryan as a head coach in the NFL. The schedule is brutal next year. Even if Rex coached halfway decent, it will be tough to reach (8-8) again.
