it is kind of odd how certain places are almost cursed for us. haven't had a lot of luck with Ohio State, mixed results with Penn St. the University of Miami is cursed only because we stupidly pass them up when they are right in our laps (Warren Sapp, Ed Reed) On the other side we've had amazing luck with Temple U. Joe Klecko, Muhammad Wilkerson... guess where our new head coach played ball? yep. Temple. I like the vibes
I think they draft another Wr this year or perhaps a TE if they don't think Amaro is the guy. Smith might be one of those unlucky guys that has their career derailed via injury and can't make it back to the team. We have 3 guys now that can catch passes and QE is coming along. I think Gailey is comfortable with the guys that are already on the roster but never got that warm and fuzzy from Smith. If Smith does make it back, his road won't be less difficult than Geno's. Neither guy has won over the CS and neither of them are critical to the overall success of the offense. In short, Devon Smith might be the unluckiest guy in Florham Pk. Time will tell.
I always thought Smith was going to be a Miles Austin... I just hoped it wouldn't include the injuries..
FWIW, this year's WR crop is not projected to be all that special. Two years ago was the year to take a WR, when we were desperate for WR help. That, IMO was Idzik's biggest mistake.
It will have nothing to do with luck IMO. I don't think he has the character to rehab back to pro form--I base this on his missing of minicamp and his performance thus far. He doesn't care about the game enough. He'll take his guarantee and that will be that IMO.
Even though it was the 3rd round pick Dexter Mcdougle is one of my least favorite draft picks of all time
Nothing he's shown so far contradicts your opinion. Huge road back for him and like you, I don't think he has the stones to get it done. I don't wanna count the kid out though. Time will tell.
It pisses me off how poorly the Jets have drafted. Like why not take DGB in the 2nd? It's completely mind boggling. Had the kid stayed at Missouri he would have easily been a top 20 pick. Smith was a huge reach. Stop taking projects. Idzik's two 4th round WRs aren't even on the team anymore but yet the 6th rounder is. That is some piss poor talent evaluation. Idk how these guys have jobs. I could do better.
He seems to like Enunwa. He has really stepped up and made some good catches. Looks like he has a future with the team. Going into next season we have Marshall, Decker, Enunwa, and Thompkins. The later two have some potential to contribute. We need to get younger though for the future. Smith is becoming an after thought with this injury. His whole next season is pretty much out the window. Hopefully he can bounce back but it shouldn't deter this administration from going after another WR. Getting a solid #3 that can eventually take over would be great. We haven't have great depth at WR for a minute. Drafting 1 in the 3rd or 4th would definitely be justified and I would support it. However, TE is much less of a need. Hopefully Amaro comes back into the fold and does work. I have faith and think he will turn into a good weapon. But with the offense we run we should have Gailey's system for the next several years, TE isn't important. I don't see us drafting one before the 5th round.
you contradict yourself saying you wanted DGB and then stop taking projects. DGB is a huge project. I know I sound like a broken record but Lockett was the dude. He is a stud, had a lengthy college resume, and he has been NFL ready from day one.
I disagree regarding the TE position. While in Gailey's basic system, TE may not be that important, he adapts his system to the talent he has on hand. If we have a topflight TE on the roster, do you think he'd just ignore him? No. He'd find a way to use him. Even if Amaro does pan out, which is very doubtful imo, the Jets don't have anyone behind him. He is somewhat soft and brittle. That makes the TE position more of a priority, not less. In addition, the Jets may not be in a position to get a quality WR prospect, but there could be a very good TE prospect sitting there at the Jets' pick. Is Mac then supposed to "reach" for a WR and ignore the TE? No, and I don't think he would anyway. A topflight two-dimensional TE could make the Jets' offense unstoppable. On any given play, the Jets could run the ball and have better blocking on the edge, throw the ball to Marshall, Decker, either Ivory or Powell (depending who was on the field), the TE or the 3rd WR. The D wouldn't know where the ball was going.
I don't see how DGB is a project. He got kicked out of school. He is more polished than Smith. He isn't sure fire but he's a freak. #1 national ranked football player going into college. Sky is the limit for potential. Like I said if he didn't get kicked out he would be far from a project and would be a top 20 pick.
I mean obviously you don't ignore it if Gronk like talent is there. You're right you go BPA. If there is top-flight TE's you take them over a reach WR. However I just don't see TE as an area of need. Should a great TE prospect be BPA at any point during the draft (other than the first round or two) you draft him. Don't write Amaro off, he has tons of potential. He's a baller, and should have a good season next year.
I don't think that "project" was the right term. A "huge risk" is a better way to describe him. A phenomenal talent and physical specimen? Definitely. Dumb as dirt and a drug suspension waiting to happen? Definitely. Didn't he also get kicked off his second college team? If not, I think he was suspended a time or two. When I saw him play at Mizzou, I fell in love with his talent and wanted the Jets to draft him. After he was kicked out of Mizzou, and then got in trouble at his second school, I said there's no way I want the Jets to even consider taking him.
I haven't written him off yet, but then again, I never wanted the Jets to draft him in the first place. He looked stiff to me in college, and something like 90% of his catches in college were within 5 yards of the LOS and he was never covered. He couldn't block. He did much better than I thought he would his rookie season, but if he doesn't learn how to block, he's pretty useless as far as I'm concerned. There's no excuse for a TE his size not to be able to block.
