So Stefon Diggs isn't a pussy. A rookie not being a pussy, that's rare. Usually they need time for their balls to unfurl from their collegian vaginas.
I wonder what people's expectations were for Smith. If anyone thought we had a future star in our midst then I can see why people would be underwhelmed. IMHO he was not or ever would project as a #1. At best I could see him becoming a #2 but more than likely I thought he would be nothing more than a very good 4th WR. A guy who could start when you need it and catch the occasional deep pass against nickel and dime CBs when we go 4 wides. Smith was a very short sighted pick. Mac knew the current roster lacked speed at WR so he spent a day 2 pick on a guy that would remedy that. For that reason and that reason alone I find the pick somewhat similar to the Kyle Wilson pick. Both guys were drafted to fill an immediate and specific role for the current roster and not necessarily to be future starters. That's where the comparison ends though. He hasn't shown it yet but he is much better at what he does than Kyle Wilson was. In contrast the Leonard Williams pick was a long term pick. Side note: To be fair to Kyle Wilson he should have never been drafted by a team that played predominantly press man; he's more of a cover 2 CB.
We took another one trick pony "development" player again in the 2nd round. I don't get it, we never develop shit here so why do we even take these guys?
because we don't take Wr's in the first round. Or Qb's, or any offensive position player. BPA's are always defense for this organization.
I don't think he is a one trick pony though. As I said in another thread I think his speed is overrated as much as his route running gets underrated by fans.
Props to you But do we ever really draft well at WR? Since Coles, Moss, Cotchery, can you think of anyone since then?
well he definitely had a little alligator arm going on with that one deep pass in the middle of the field
Geezuz. JJ Nelson, a rookie out of nowhere. It's not that complicated. Run fast, get open deep, catch the ball. 67 yard TD pass. _
Beat me to it. No route running. No development. Put a burner out wide, have him run really fast, beat the coverage deep. All you need to do is catch the fucking ball. _
This little dude Nelson on Arizona is lighting it up. I swear every team has some speedy WR or back on their roster who can take any play the distance and the mettle to actually do it. We never have those types of players. Tons of overachieving "effort" guys and talented guys with no heart. That's the Jets.
Yeah well, like Devin Smith, he's used to playing on the biggest of stages, coming out of Alabama. Well, Alabama Birmingham, which is pretty much the same. _
He's in his own head right now, like a catcher who has the yips, he can't even catch a ball right now. This season's shot for him, hopefully he can regroup and come back next year with confidence.
If that was the sole reason then it is very shot sighted, could have waited until day 3 and grabbed a guy like Tre McBride (who while isn't exactly playing for the Titans) could do the same exact thing and at least he wouldn't have been a high pick on another WR who is one dimensional. Chris Conley was a 3rd round pick and has been more productive than Smith. As far as expectations .... catching the ball would be one of them.
And he lasted until the 5th round, largely due to injury issues I think. I mentioned him a few times as a possible third day steal.
