OP is correct that we will never rebuild from the ground up and will always be tempted to sign the big name, even if that player is past his prime and overpriced. I disagree that Idzik was the guy to get it done. His inability to fill glaring holes on this team through the draft and low-price FAs (most notably in the secondary and at WR) was inexcusable, and he paid for it. Now, we are back to a short term, short-sighted approach that focuses on veteran talent. The emphasis is not on developing players, but on putting the best product possible out there right now. It makes for a better team today, but I don't think it is sustainable.
You don't rebuild from the ground up when you play in the NY market and share a stadium with the giants...who doesn't know that? And you don't need to when you have a good coach and gm.
I was gonna say I can't wait for us to win 2 in a row so I can start my "we're well on the way to being the 80's niners" thread.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Jets "had" to spend a certain amount of their cap dollars due to how little they spent in Idzik's 2 years, in order to avoid basically forking over gobs of cash to the NFLPA. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...ree-agency-this-offseason-20150305-story.html
This post does have merit. The Jets have a lot of band aids on this roster and the only good young players we have that aren't about to get paid are Pryor and Williams. Our drafts have been hideous outside of the first round for a while now. Hopefully Devin Smith and Mauldin turn into something but as of now they aren't looking like great picks (especially Smith)
I wouldn't really judge Smith too much when Fitz has under thrown him on every deep route he has ran. He does need to do a better job at staying healthy though.
I'd comment if I gave two shits for the NBA...honestly I don't know how some of you watch that garbage... boring ...give me Duke vs Syracuse Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Take one look at the jets' 2014 draft and you won't want Idzik back. He had something like 12 draft picks and he damn near wasted everyone of them, especially Dexter McWorthless in the 3rd round when most teams had him a potential free agent at best.
Unbelievable. I thought I had seen the worst of the stupid, negative posts, but yours takes the cake. Yeah, there's nothing to look forward to and no reason to have hope. You should just climb up on that ledge and jump. In fact, let me give you a little push.
On what precisely do you base this opinion? To begin with Mac HAD to spend most of the money he spent. It was required by the NFL because Idzik hadn't spent it. Second, there is absolutely NOTHING about the way Mac has gone about building this team that gives one iota of proof or veracity to your claim. He is simply trying to make the team competitive while he is re-shaping/rebuilding the roster. If you look at the contracts he signed, most of them can be negated after this year or next. He's not hamstringing the future cap with those deals. He didn't kick the can down the road ala Idzik and Tanny. If he was going all in, he would have traded draft picks for established players, and he most certainly wouldn't have taken Williams with the #1 pick. Taking the BPA is a move the GM makes when he's building the team for the future, especially when the position that player plays was already stacked. If Mac were truly going all in this year, he wouldn't have taken Williams, he would have been more aggressive, probably traded up a time or two and taken players to address needs who could contribute immediately, not players like Mauldin and Smith who were going to take a year or so to develop. He certainly wouldn't have taken a 4th round QB who had played in a one-read spread offensive system and who had never taken a snap from under center. Your reasoning is totally and fatally flawed. Did you even read and think about what you were saying before posting it?
Eh the Mets are proof you 'can' rebuild in NY. Even the Knicks are more or less trying to rebuild now (though only after signing Carmelo).
This. We can cut Cro after this year, Revis in 2 or 3 years (why would you though?), Harris in 2, Gilchrist in 2 or 3, Marshall can be cut next year (again, why would you though?). We took Leonard Williams as well, which will probably free up cap room when we trade away or let one of our DEs go (just what I expect to happen IMO). With the way our offensive line is playing we will rework their deals or they will be cut. I am not too afraid that if we need to go out and get a very important piece, that we still have to cap room.
Exactly, and well said. People can disagree with the OP all they want, I think he has a point. At the very least we are not in an enviable position right now despite our record and, unless something changes, are having to face the possibility of losing some games that we probably should've won if we were healthy.
Two losses and we are talking about "What could have been?" with John Idzik,You are pathetic. We are gonna be 5-3 by Sunday afternoon
I tend to think that, viewing the FA signings this year as the [short term answer] for [window now] is a very short-sighted opinion. If anything, there now exists this thing called Salary FLOOR, and there is a preset minimum that each team must spend each year. Jets didn't spend much last year, so they had to spend big this year. [Remember this.] 1. Fitzpatrick AND Geno will give Jets about 3 year window. That's the time Jets must use to square away the deficiencies in the offense. First and foremost, if Petty is the next guy up [that this FO believes] then he will get the time he needs to learn the NFL offense and acclimate himself to the pro schemes and defense coverage. This time is essential. Also, Jets must address the holes along the offensive line, and get a physical WR. Last time I checked, Brandon Marshall was a 4th round pick, and Martavis Bryant was also a 4th rounder; meaning, a tall, physical WR can be had at 4th round pick. Devin Smith is there for the next QB so that's one hole taken care of, and Jace Amaro is going to be another pass catching TE that the new QB needs. Not all is lost yet thus far. 2. Same deal on the defensive side of the ball; don't expect Cro and Revis to live through their given contract. I am starting to think that, Jets will draft a CB later if Milliner doesn't take over one of the CB spot. [CB #2 is going to Williams in my opinion.] Again, there are about 3 year window to address the secondary too. DL is strong as ever, but LB corp needs some fresh blood. Zo and Reilly are there; I am having high hopes for Lorenzo, but more blue chipper won't hurt. Jets also need ILB, and Harris/Davis will give about 3 years; it will depend on when Jets choose to address ILB. I'd say that OLB is about the only pressing need at this moment. 3. For this reason, I thought that the legitimate need in the coming draft are QB [if the FO thinks Petty is not good enough; we don't know yet.], OL [C/LT] and OLB for the day 1/day 2 picks. Seriously, 3 drafts are quite a bit of overhaul, and Jets should be able to bridge the gap between the old players and the newcomers within that time frame.
So do you listen to someone besides Bowles when it comes to Petty? Here is what he actually had to say, “I have confidence in Bryce,” Bowles said, via the New York Post. “Obviously, he doesn’t know what Ryan knows. He doesn’t know what Geno knows. But he knows a good portion of our offense. He can function and go in there and play a game.”. Sounds quite a bit different from your "no where close to being able to run this offense" Having Petty start is obviously not ideal but for one game against the Jags he should be OK. One let down game after going to the west coast is not the end of the season, they have one of the easiest remaining schedule of any team with a decent shot at the WC spot. The remaining teams they play have a combined 44% winning percentage, Raiders opponents are at 49%, Bills opponents at 50%, Steelers opponents at 51%. Mangold will be back this week, we'll just have to see what the injury report says about the rest of them but at home against the Jags the D will come back strong and the O will do enough to get the win.
