The extra point rule changed - 2pt conversion still starts at 2 yard line, but XP kick is pushed back 13 yards - so it's some 30 yard FG try now. As it stands, I am thinking, it's only right to go for 2, without even bothering with the kicks now. 2pt conversion only needs to be 50%+ to be just as effective as FG kick at 100% conversion ratio. At 30 yard kick, we all know that's not quite the case. [Close to 75-80% leaguewide, last time I checked.] If any team does better than 50%, then it's a sure win for 2pt conversion. ====================================================================== Of course, this means you will have to develop a bread-and-butter play that will give you a sure short yard gain, but that CAN be done. Sprint right/left option from WCO during Montana/Young days at SF comes to mind.
Totally agree with this. Before Ben got hurt, the Steelers said they would go for two a lot more times. It also screws with the opponent if you score a TD first and convert on the two pointer.
I hate it. It takes away the opportunity for a trick two point play instead of the one point kick. Ravens tried the fake on a similar length field goal Thursday night. If they put a dotted line for two points at the 13 yard line I could live with that.
They never went for 2 last night? However, Both of those 4th down calls were atrocious. 4th and 2 -- Vick designed run? Pound it with Bell! Then Baltimore goes 3 and out and Steelers get the ball back with great field position after Browns 29 yard punt return. What happens? 4th and 1? Let your backup QB throw the ball??? GIVE the ball to Bell!!!
Yeah, my bad...I was referring to those 4th & 1's. I always liked Tomlin's style...but that was some questionable coaching. They had that game wrapped...then he went all Rex Ryan.
I was having a conversation with a buddy of mine about who the best coaches in the league are. Bill, Arians, Harbough, Caroll, and Tomlins name came up, but man, last night was brutal as could be!
that's okay. don't mind seeing the Steelers lose ever. also, if we want to be relevant at the end of the season another loss for a contender like Pitt is a good thing
I was surprised last night when they didn't make a single sprint option call. That is the most logical call in my mind, no doubt; the QB has a option of running if things break down. Primary read is a safe read with high percentage yardage/completion chance. If the defense concentrate the personnel in the shallow play side, Vick has two options - first would be the receiver deep in the play side, and the other would be single coverage at the back side. You can't stop ALL options here. Maybe not a long yardage play, but this will give a sure short yardage for sure. This play stayed in 49ers staple for a decade for a reason. [I am sure Vick knows this play as well - he played for Andy Reid, and there is just no way Reid doesn't know this play.]
I hope so. 2 point conversions are cool. I am not sure about that though unless they move the kick back even further. Even if the odds say it has become 85% XP kick vs. 60% 2 point conversion (which it might not get to that level) these NFL teams are so rooted in the past they'll just be pissed and try to find a new kicker vs. think about going for 2 all the time. The concept of "risk management & playing the odds" is lost on most NFL decision makers when it comes to things like this. Also, the first time a marquee game is lost because of a decision to go for 2 and the media hounds the coach with "why didnt they just kick!!?!?!" (and you know that will happen) they are going to lose their cajones and revert back to kicking. never mind if it was the right decision or not. if they make it even harder to kick XPs then maybe I would agree with you however.
I'd go for two every time too if my kicker was Josh Scobee. They didn't lose because of poor fourth down decisions. They lost because Scobee is a fucking awful kicker. TWO missed field goals in the fourth quarter. Game never should have made it to OT.
I never understood the problem with the PAT. It was originaly regarded as a "bonus" point, a reward for scoring a touchdown. Its supposed to be automatic. Why, after scorong a TD, should it be made harder to get the 7th point?
Then why not make a TD 7 with no kick? If you want to keep the possibility of getting 8 on a TD let that be optional and put some penalty on not getting it. Doesn't make sense to make them kick an automatic point which is what it became.
And with the amount of flags that are thrown on defenses inside the 10 , the offense should have an extra two or three attempts if they fail on the first.
Automatic 7 if you score....8 if you make the 2 pt conversion.... you only get 6 if you go for it and miss This has been mentioned and its not a terrible idea
Because then if say one team scores 2 fgs and the other scores 2 touchdowns, the 2pt conversion on the 1st teams touchdown makes up for the missing point. Football would have no strategy if we were only doing multiples of 3 or 7.
On the call Tomlin made Thursday night: Schobee is the reason the Steelers are 2-2 instead of 4-0. 4-8 on FG's including 2 misses against the Patriots and 2 against the Ravens. The 6 points lost in the Pats game wasn't the margin of victory but the misses left the Steelers down 14-0 early despite totally outplaying the Pats. They never quite dug out of that hole. If he'd made the 2 FG's the game would have been 1 possession the whole way instead of always the Steelers down by 2 scores until late. The misses totally changed the complexion of the game. Then on Thursday night Schobee was tanking again in another game the Steelers needed to win and Tomlin gave up on him. It was a natural and rational decision based on what had happened so far in the season. Schobee knew he was getting cut after the second miss.
