He hasn't in the NFL yet at this stage. Go back watch the Bucs game. There will be plenty of reasons why he could struggle. Mariota's got potential, I don't know why people think I hate him as a player. I just said, I wouldn't have traded up for him under any circumstance. I am just saying footwork is everything and that includes taking snaps under center. It's all about rhythm and effectiveness, so I don't know why certain posters want to discredit that notion.
Who said anything about the 2nd coming? I just happen to like the skill-sets he brings to the table as a pro prospect. You apparently don't read my posts enough. It's funny you act as if I only talk about snaps under center lol - way to be a close minded fuck. We shall see when he faces a decent defense that wants to tackle. You are running all over this board throwing shots at my assessments, it's pretty immature and petty.
Not assessments, plural, but assessment, singular and pointing out that Chad Kelly has poor footwork compared to Mariota in a predominantly shotgun offense is not much of a shot. Taking it as such is pretty peculiar and insecure.
I watched The game and he consistently climbed the pocket when pressure was in his face. Regardless, Quarterbacks IMMEDAITELY face pressure when they drop back. Pressure from the gun is the same as pressure from under center. He can drop back from under center just fine; you can critcize other aspects of his game...
Footwork is very important, but if a QB displays good footwork in the gun, that will transfer when he takes snaps under center. QBS do drop back from the gun as well.
His best throw was to Delanie Walker - where he stepped up in the pocket and made a strike. Pressure from the gun is not the same as pressure from under center. The defensive line is closer to the football. The ball should also be out much quicker under center, then in the shotgun. Watch Geno Smith w/ Marty M offense as a disaster example. You still need to be proficient at both, that's all I am saying. That also affects the play-action pass game which is prob one of Cook's best traits. I don't want a running game being strictly in the shotgun.
Couldn't have said it better. Back to the topic at hand Chad Kelly does not move his feet at all. He relies solely on his arm which is very impressively strong. Still he manages to be on times with a lot of his throws don't know if he can get away with that in the NFL. I'm conflicted about him because I'm a big footwork.
But the distinction needs to be made between footwork and drops. You can have great feet and display good footwork without yet having learned certain drops. If you have the former, learning the latter should be pretty easy. The analogy I've used before is the correlation between rhythm and learning a dance move or choreography. The guy with some natural rhythm generally should have an easier time learning the a dance move vs the stiff. Mariota showed he had rhythm so I was not worried about him learning the dance.
Even though I don't think he had a particularly good game last night against Alabama, even with his off-field baggage, I think Chad Kelly is a MUCH better prospect than Connor Cook. That said, they both tend to throw just with their arms and stand flat-footed or throw off their back foot/heels. They can get away with it in college, but not in the NFL. It affects accuracy and velocity negatively. Did you notice that when Kelly is wild, it's wild high? Stepping into his throws will help correct that.
Unless he gets injured, he is going to be a beast in the NFL. He has the potential to be better than Suh. Did you see the clip of him catching the pass and running down the sideline like a RB? The guy is amazingly fast and athletic for a 300 pounder.
So now that the bears are trading all their players and rebuilding for the year, it looks like Goff will be a Bear with the #1 pick.
Way too early to discuss draft positioning and we don't even know if he'll come out. I doubt he regresses, but most thought Bridgewater would be the first pick at this time in 2013. In a loaded class, he can be the type of QB to fall.
Bears are tanking. They traded away Jared Allen. QB @ #1. There are some really good defensive players also.
I like Goff but 1st overall?? I get the whole QB thing but sheesh.. I don't see a QB right now worth the 1st pick unless you're banking on Hackenburg's physical ability & believe w/o conviction that all his struggles are due to his OL. While I think he'd certainly be performing better in a different setting, he sure makes a lot of bad decisions...
If you think he's an elite, accurate passer, who can function against pressure(which he does very well), why wouldn't he be worth the first pick? Not too many flaws with Goff, so far; the only question mark is his responsibility in that offense and hand size, along with the frame. He looks as if he'll be a better prospect than Bradford ,who went first, or Bortles who went third.
