Is there really still people who think Geno is a NFL QB? If Geno gets a chance, I wonder what the excuse will be this year, the old classic the OC isn't calling plays to his strengths, whatever that would be, besides turning the ball over, or the OL sucks never fails, go to love the short sighted Geno homers
The trend started in 2004 with Roethlisberger and continued with Alex Smith in 2005 and JaMarcus Russell in 2007 and then finally got back on track with Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco in 2008. Since then we've had Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez and Josh Freeman in 2009 and then Sam Bradford in 2010. It's a terrible trend in which more franchises have had initial regrets than outstanding successes. Alongside Dalton in 2011 you had Cam Newton (worked) and Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder (didn't). The last really hot prospect who just sat for most of his rookie season without having a very good QB in front of him on the depth chart was Carson Palmer in 2003. The Bengals, who had been a terrible team for a decade, wisely chose to let Jon Kitna take all 16 starts and got a surprising 8-8 season out of it, leading to a solid season with Palmer in 2004 and the Bengals first playoff run in fifteen years in 2005.
I was never a "huge Genophile"...I may have said he threw a nice ball. And who says I still don't hate you?
You want me to find the post? Nah, I can't waste a second of my time looking up an ancient post someone made in the distant past. So infantile, so weak. _
Good points but I'd say the one year starting a rookie Qb came into prominence was 2012 esp with Luck and RG3. Then you had EJ and Geno in 2013 and both guys were failures. I'm thinking maybe they'll not use Petty at all this year and maybe for game 2 bring back Josh Johnson. It could be the Jets just didn't like what they saw from Flynn and don't want to guarantee Johnson's salary.
Bryce Petty is just a hope at this point and a faint one at that. He's not exhibiting the skills needed to play in the NFL and he doesn't have the knowledge yet to possibly correct some of his deficiencies. He's a 4th round pick. 95% of those guys are backup QB's at best. Since the merger the best QB's taken in the 4th round were Joe Theismann in 1971 and Rich Gannon in 1987. The only 4th rounder starting in the NFL right now is Kirk Cousins and he's starting by default because the Redskins couldn't make RG III work out. The other names you might recognize recently who were 4th round picks are Kyle Orton, David Garrard and Aaron Brooks. All started games in the post-Peyton era and were ok but nothing special. Since Peyton Manning was drafted there have been 20 QB's taken in the 4th round and Cousins will be the fourth to start a season as an NFL starting QB. Only Garrard actually established himself as an NFL starter on a contender. I'm just hoping Petty is good enough to carry a clipboard for the Jets and maybe gets into a game by chance in a year or two and takes off like Tom Brady did. Extremely small chance that happens but we can always hope. If Petty fails it will have nothing to do with the Jets failure to develop him into a starting QB. There's no procedure for doing that with a 4th round pick. The guy just has to be damn good and put that on display or he's going to be a backup his entire career.
At least they contribute something positive to the sight, instead of just always being critical and putting others down like you. You contribute nothing good to this site.
How is he not exhibiting the skills needed to play in the NFL? He's made great progress and Gailey said as much. He has the arm, the accuracy, the poise and more. Is he ready to start? No. But he has shown a LOT of promise already, much faster than many thought he would. Do QBs taken in the 4th round and lower usually develop into starters? No, but there's a first time for everything. Petty didn't fall because he didn't have the talent or ability to play in the NFL. He fell solely because of the system he played in at Baylor. He's already demonstrated that he is getting a pretty good handle on the Jets' system. Write it down. Petty will be competing for the starting job next season.
First Geno has to do it in regulation games and he's done it (esp at the end of last season) but not consistently. And the error ratio has to be dramatically reduced. As for typecasting Petty as a 4th round pick and basically saying he doesn't really have a chance to be a starter in the NFL there's just too many situations where very high no. 1 selections are busts and Qbs drafted in the upper rounds become starters. So based on what we hear and what we saw during the exhibition season he's made progress and could some day be our starting Qb. But you're right in that it's a longer shot for a guy like him to even get a chance. A lot of Qbs fail in their NFL careers just because they never got a chance to play or get reps in practice, etc. Since most teams commit to only one Qb.
100%. He's got all the physical tools and by all accounts an extremely bright kid who is climbing up the learning curve geometrically. If the mental part clicks, we've got a player at the most important position. _
I'm leaving here at 11:15. Enjoying my morning coffee out by the pool which I'm freaking closing next week dammit. _
Aha. So you got the Green Pass. Stokes. For Skins game and Jaguars game I will bring my wife and the boys. We won't tailgate. Let me know how late I can arrive to the stadium and still find a decent parking spot if I get a Green Parking pass.
I hate driving to the games. So I take the LIRR and then NJ Transit. There is also a bus that goes from the PA to Met Life but I love the train.
Gailey's exact words were that he didn't like where Petty was now (skill-wise obviously) but he liked the direction he was heading. That's coach-speak for I just don't know but I haven't given up on him yet.
Well then he shouldn't be no. 2. Because there's a possibility he could play today. IMO they will re-sign Josh Johnson tomorrow. Because Geno probably isn't going to be ready for another 3 weeks.
I reckon he'll be a serviceable part of the roster for a couple of years (injuries permitting) but I'm not quite ready to out him up there with Mo and Sheldon just yet. Hopefully, I'm radically harsh on the young man and he performs all-pro today in which case I shall be suitably humbled and start rooting for Geno to be cut and find a job next year.
The Jets are protecting other developmental players on the 53. If Fitzpatrick gets hurt it will backfire at some level but you take chances to protect the most talent unless you have high expectations of winning this season.
