This is exactly how he should respond: "can't talk about a player who is under contract to another team, sorry." The fifth year option on RGIII's contract is guaranteed for injury. The 2016 fifth year option on RG III's deal is not guaranteed for anything but an injury that occurs before or during the 2015 season at this point. In the absence of an injury he can be released when the 2016 league year opens with no repercussions related to the exercise of the fifth year option. This is true for the Redskins and it's true for any team that acquires him. Assuming the Redskins have really decided to move on the Jets could theoretically trade Geno Smith to them for RGIII, have RGIII sit until he's fully healthy and ready to go and then get him on the field at some point this season to demonstrate that he's healthy. We'd then have the option of keeping RG III at the $16M option price next year or cutting him after the season and avoiding the cap hit. That would be a "both teams have decided to move on due to locker room issues and give the players a fresh start" move. It would give the Redskins a backup QB and a face-saving return for Dan Snyder on the RG III debacle. It would give the Jets a free look at a potential franchise QB that could be parlayed into several different opportunities during the season. They could really like what they see out of RG III, who will be MUCH better in a Chan Gailey offense than in the thing that Gruden is trying to run in Washington. If they like it enough they can work out an extension with RG III or just let him play under the option, knowing they can franchise him again in 2017 if need be. The Jets could not like what they see and cut RG III after the season with no strings attached. The one real problem in the entire scenario is that RG III is not fully healthy right now. It stands to reason that if the Jets don't put him on the field to prove he is healthy at some point during 2015 they will be on the hook for the $16M in 2016. Also, there's the problem that he might get hurt again. Finally there's the problem that in theory RG III is in control of whether or not he's "healthy" enough to void the 2016 option. The Jets couldn't just trade for him and stash him on the roster for most of the 2015 season. Right now the Jets don't have a franchise QB. RG III is at least some shot at changing that. Maybe it's not a great shot but is anybody really going to suggest that Geno Smith and Bryce Petty is a better long-term plan than RG III and Petty?
I'd trade Geno Smith or a late round pick but hell fucking no would I give up a 2nd or 3rd for this guy.
I agree with the first half of this statement. The second part is horse shit! If a team who has paid $20M, 3 first rounds picks, a second rounder, two HCs, two GMs and an owner who doesn't care about money feel he is a POS, what in hell would ever make you think he would secede on the Jets? This team is a QB killer! The only thing about RG3 which is true, he is better than our own POS Smith, but I would start Fitz any day over RG3.
Well I think a lot of QB's would secede from the Jets if they had a choice, but... And the answer is that I don't think anything the Redskins do under Dan Snyder is sound. I think they're one of the worst run franchises in professional sports based on how much money they spend for the results they achieve. I wouldn't be at all surprised if RG III turned into a Drew Brees-like success story once he's liberated from the organizational muck he's mired in right now. And, yeah some of it is his fault but the Redskins have won a better percentage of their games with him on the field than with Cousins and the other guys they've played when he was hurt.
Brees never suffered as many injuries, and certainly not any as severe as what RG3 has gone through (did have that throwing arm injury though). Not to mention I think Brees was just a better player overall coming out of school.
Brees shoulder injury was bad enough that only two teams got involved in the bidding for his services. The Fins signed a guy coming off a torn ACL/MCL combo instead of him in the end. During his signing press conference Brees actually said that he expected to play at some point in 2006 but wasn't sure when, at which point Mickey Loomis tried to wrap things up quickly so Brees comment didn't cause a flurry of questions.
Two leg injuries in one year, including a torn LCL/ACL, then a dislocated ankle, then a concussion. All in three of his first four years. Shit like that is hard to overcome when you're already struggling to learn an NFL offense, something Brees never had to deal with. I just don't see it in the kid. Never have, and certainly don't after this latest injury. It's unfortunate because he physically has the tools. They just get kind of rusty and end up breaking every year.
http://nypost.com/2015/08/21/rg3-redskins-have-their-mark-sanchez-moment/ RG3, Redskins have their Mark Sanchez moment By Post Wire Report August 21, 2015 | 9:42am Modal Trigger Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III gets medical attention during the first half of a preseason game on Aug. 20. Photo: AP LANDOVER, Md. — After watching Robert Griffin III get knocked around for three possessions, Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden sent his starting quarterback back out for a fourth Thursday night. That one ended with consecutive sacks and Griffin leaving with a concussion. Griffin was hurt early in the second quarter of Washington’s 21-17 exhibition victory over the Detroit Lions when he fumbled the ball without contact while scrambling, then got landed on by defensive end Corey Wooton. Gruden said he had “no idea” how long the 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year would be sidelined. https://platform.vine.co/static/scripts/embed.js Griffin also got a stinger in his right shoulder, but Gruden said that should be OK. As part of the NFL’s concussion rules, Griffin wasn’t allowed to speak to reporters after the game. He completed 2 of 5 passes for 8 yards, fumbled twice, was sacked three times and hit hard on other occasions. Asked why he kept Griffin in for a fourth series despite the pounding the QB was taking, Gruden replied: “We weren’t doing that well on offense. I wanted to try to get something going on offense. A lot of quarterbacks play into the second quarter in a preseason game. Football is a tough sport.” The injury in a meaningless game called to mind the downfall of Mark Sanchez with the Jets. The two-time playoff quarterback was inserted into the fourth quarter of a preseason game by former Jets coach Rex Ryan — and suffered a season-ending shoulder injury behind a patchwork offensive line. The No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft after winning the Heisman Trophy, Griffin has been plagued by injuries in the pros, including tearing knee ligaments as a rookie and dislocating an ankle last year. After his last play Thursday, Griffin stayed down on the field for about 5 minutes and was tended to by trainers, while some teammates kneeled nearby. After Griffin got up, he walked slowly to the sideline, then kept going until he left the field and entered the tunnel that leads to the Redskins’ locker room. Griffin gave a thumbs up to spectators as he trudged away. “It definitely makes you cringe,” said Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, who sat out after hurting his right foot in practice this week. “You don’t want to see your quarterback get hit at all, in preseason nor regular season. It’s definitely not a pleasant feeling.” The other four offensive line starters played, including No. 5 overall draft pick Brandon Scherff at right guard. https://platform.vine.co/static/scripts/embed.js Early on, Griffin had one pass batted down by linebacker Tahir Whitehead. The fourth-year quarterback wound up on his back on a third-down incompletion on Washington’s second possession, driven to the turf by linebacker DeAndre Levy on a delayed blitz. Later, Griffin was knocked down hard by defensive end Phillip Hunt, who blew past backup left tackle Willie Smith. “It felt like we were picking Robert up after every pass play. So we’ve got to fix that,” center Kory Lichtensteiger said. As for who would start Washington’s next preseason game, Aug. 29 at Baltimore, Gruden said: “We’ll have to see. I would imagine, depending how long he’s out, he’s still going to be our starter.” Added Gruden: “We’ll have to wait, go through the whole process, see how he recovers, see how fast he recovers.”
Rg3 should just retire.....his whole carrer is a joke and a punchline.And no I wouldn't trade for RG3......not even a 7th round pick
I wouldn't mind him as a backup if he didn't have such injury history. He hasn't been the same since he back from that knee injury. He's like the Bionic Man without all the improvements. I am sure he will catch on somewhere.
his awesome rookie year felt years ago, 4 years ago….other then that he stinks, these types of moves NEVER work out.
Honestly, I don't even think it would be wise to trade him for 6th rounder. Not interested in a QB debate. Lets go with Fitzpatrick. We have an OC that has a history with him.
Purdue ran a Spread offense with Brees in the shotgun as the normal formation. He struggled early in his career because he didn't have a lot of experience with taking snaps from under center. He didn't have the same field of vision in that formation that he did from the shotgun. By the time he'd figured things out the Chargers had already moved on with the Philip Rivers trade in 2004. RG III and Brees are really not similar as players but they both had to deal with the reality of moving into a pro offense after playing in a high-powered spread in college. Joe Tiller was the only coach in the Big Ten running the Spread for years and certainly the only one when Brees was his QB.
