I actually like some of the plays Gailey called......He called a little bit of everything. One thing he won't do is rush the "Wildcat" qb on the field
maybe he is just using the offense that adapts to the personnel he has to work with. can't run a vertical passing game deep with fitz like you can with geno. meanwhile, don't rush petty and let him learn the offense and adapt to the nfl game. rodgers sat for 3 years in green bay. petty sitting for 1 year in new york is not a bad thing.
I think his playcalling would seem better with a QB that has the requisite arm strength to routinely test imperfect coverage downfield.
I doubt he'll be revealing his best plays in preseason, it seems very straight forward and simple. Save the big plays for week 1 when results actually matter.
If anything, he could produce 37 points, at one point, with Jay Fiedler, of all QBs. With decent talent, he's good for about 23-24 pts/game. With putrid ones, he's still good for 18-20 pts/game. Expect the Jets O to be around 22-23 pts/game area this year. That's about as far as Fitz will take this team. [His best years with Gailey was 2011 - and the Bills were averaging 23 pts/game in fact.] Gailey did have 17 pts average as the Bills HC, but then his QB for the first two games was Trent Edwards, and Bills scored the grand total of 17 points in two games; the offense took off once Fitz started, scoring 30 in a losing effort against the Patriots in week 3 and onward. His average with Fitz in 2010 is about 19, a tad bit lower than his bad years - but not that far off. The next year, he came back with 23 - so you know you're in decent hands. And to give you some barometer: 30+ pts/game means top 2-3 offense in the league in any given year. About 23 is good for #10 or so. 20-22 is where the mediocrity lies [#16] And 17 to 18 is around 24 and out.
I heard that he ultimately wants to play Decker in the slot and start Marshall and Devin Smith at WR. That is why Kerley is getting small love in training camp. I am all for the jets developing Smith into a vertical threat. Not since Wesley Walker have the jets had a man who consistently can get behind the defense and stretch the field.
I think the team as a whole will be a work in progress all season & judgment should be reserved until at least the midway point. I'm not sure Gailey would be running the same offense with Geno at QB so I can't really give an opinion.
Please provide examples of this awful statement. Because Fitzpatrick got a $60 million contract because of Gailey. He also made Fielder, Thigpen and Stewart (a WR) look like actual quarterbacks.
People say this every year. I remember the year when we couldn't score a TD in the preseason until the very last game when backups were playing. Sparano was our OC and kept saying "it was vanilla" ... We know how that season went . . . http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/08/12/sparano-calls-jets-performance-vanilla/ Also does that mean we should be even more worried how our 1st team defense has played against vanilla offenses . . .
I mean.. our offense sucked that year, and Sparano is a vanilla coach after his little wildcat phase was over. And No i'm not worried about the defense because like offense, the defensive play calls have been vanilla as well. IF you know anything about Todd Bowles defense you know he's blitz happy as hell (#1 in the league last year in blitzes in AZ, we barely blitzed in those preseason games even though we lined up as if we were going to). We also didn't have Mo Wilk and Sheldon in there with the first team... that makes a worlds difference! I highly doubt Abdullah woulda hit that long run as easily if Mo was in because that was his side.. and on the big play vs ATL Ryan had all day to throw after dropping to Mo Wilk's side.. i mean ALLL day.. and coples gotta make a better play on that.
He doesn't want to blitz, he said that this week, just as ryan didn't want to blitz, they would both like to see a pass rush..with williams and wilkerson and rixhardson we might get one (of course we will have to wait to see them play together).
