I like Petty alot. He's probably the most intriguing QB prospect that this franchise has had since Chad Pennington just because of his arm talent and the fact that he will sit behind the starter for at least 2 years.
You obviously didn't read the article lol No one is pushing him. In fact, the article says that the Jets need to be smart and not rush him into a starting role.
The idea that Petty is needs a couple years and then he's gonna be Marino is a pipe dream...You're either ready when you come into the league or its never gonna happen
Petty was drafted by Mac not Idzik so he has that going for him since I really think our GM knows what he is doing. Kid needs more preseason games but I am hopeful. Look how Winston did so far for Bucs and Mariota initially threw badly. Petty did a decent job IMO. Smith homers I am sure are feeling uneasy right now as FItz and Petty become our saviors (bold prediction).
I don't think Petty sees the field at all during the regular season even if Geno and Fitz are both out. I base that on his history last year with the Cardinals and his mentor Bruce Arians who refused to start Logan Thomas amid all their QB drama. Arians said Thomas wasn't ready and stuck to it. I firmly believe Bowles will do the same with Petty and not feel pressured into starting him this year.
I hope so much that he can develop and be the franchise QB we've been waiting for years to have. However, I'm cautiously optimistic. The fact he's a 4th rounder shows many teams weren't high on his potential. The odds are against him imo. There are so many college-successful QBs that come into the league and take jobs as backups for a while and then get a chance to start and just don't amount to much. They just float around the league as backups or mediocre stopgaps. I do think he has as best of a chance as he can get with this CS if they stick to what they've been saying by not throwing him to the wolves and taking a couple seasons to develop him. Let's cross our fingers and see if he can eventually "get it" and become our star.
I hope he succeeds, but if we have the chance to draft another good QB next year, so be it. We got too hung up on Geno to pass on Bridgewater and that was a mistake. The next good QB will rise to the occassion, but until we find the answer we can't assume anyone is gonna "make it".
Most draft analysts said that he needs 1 year of development or 2 tops, I wouldn't be surprised to see him competing for the job next season. Aaron Rodgers got 3 years but that's only because they also wanted to fix his throwing mechanics (and they had Favre in front of him). Petty's delivery is fine. You also have to remember that Rodgers was 24 AFTER 3 years of development, Petty is already 24. Cases of players getting 2+ years of development, especially at Petty's age, are very rare. Especially since he'd have to be eating a roster spot the whole time since lots of teams would steal him from the practice squad.
I don't think it's totally accurate to say that teams weren't high on his potential. I don't recall reading one bad word about his physical or mental tools/abilities. Every question I saw in print was with his regard to make the conversion from a one-read spread offense to an NFL offense. Bowles and Gailey have already said that the kid knows how to play QB. He has a very strong, accurate arm. He has prototypical size. He's smart, humble, hungry, mature, and a hard worker. He wants to be the best he can be and one of the best in the game. He learned and mastered Baylor's offense in a year. I fully expect that he makes the transition and become a quality starter in the NFL. He just has too much going for him, and if some of the other dumbasses that have played QB in the NFL could do it, I think Bryce can.
Petty has the tools and command to be a very good quarterback and leader of the offense. Can he refine them and get better and evolve is the franchise changing question. If he can, you better bet he will be the best thing that ever happened to the team since Namath.
This...totally agree. From what we know, at the moment, he has the mental makeup. Let's see if he can take this year and learn the offense and give him a quality look in the offseason. I REALLY HOPE that Fitz can stay healthy and be competitive for a couple years to let the kid really get immersed. Just doesn't seem very likely in today's NFL.
