Compared to Fitz he didn't have the experience but for some people the game slows down as they get comfortable. The best case scenario is for us to know what we have in him. But that's a moot point now.
I definitely see your point, but sometimes it is pretty obvious when someone doesn't have it. Especially at QB. Kellen Clemens was also a 2nd Round Pick. He didn't get near the chances Geno has been given. He turned into a solid back-up. Geno is similar, I would say. He can do that at his next location.
Geno definitely has better physical tools than Clemons. Geno needed to sit a year but he was thrown in the fire. The book isn't written on him yet and I would rather see how he does with added weapons and by all accounts he was outplaying Fitz in practice. So I wanted to see how that translates to the regular season. If he doesn't pan out then maybe backup QB is his ceiling.
Not a fan of his game, he's a weak armed gunslinger with a 33-55 career record. He's been benched and then let go by every team he's been a starter for, and none of them released him on account of bringing in someone else great. He's the definition of mediocre and we have all said as much when we faced him in the past. In my view, you either have a franchise QB or are developing a franchise QB in this league. If you aren't doing either, you are nowhere. If this guy is our starter for 16 games this season, we are nowhere (in the present or looking forward). He can lead us to 7-8 wins with the talent around him, I do believe that, but the season is a lost season if he starts 16 games.
Throwing rookie QBs to the fire is a relatively new trend. Guys like John Elway didn't take over the starting job without sitting and learning for at least half of a season.
I'm not advocating throwing Petty out there, just voicing my frustration that we may just ride out the season with the veteran journeyman, which doesn't accomplish anything with respect to the QB position. It's why I still strongly wanted to see Geno play this season, even if he fell on his face yet again. At least with him there was upside. You can't sell me on upside with Fitzpatrick, the body of work is too established and the physical limitations are just too glaring. It's an unfortunate turn to the season even if it doesn't make us immediately much worse or anything.
What does him being from Harvard have to do with anything? The Harvard man hasn't figure out how to get into playoffs for 10 years. If you think Geno will never play in the NFL again dude you don't have a clue about this league. Don't let the hate for Geno clog you're thinking.
Check out the Bills defensive rankings during Fitz's tenure in Orchard Park. His knock while with the Bills was that he always tried too hard late in the game playing catch up and threw the untimely INT. He never had the solid D you guys have. I'd say you are all in for a pleasant surprise.
as much as i can't stand Fitz i think you're right and i've always judged him harshly mainly because he played for you guys. I look at his teams in those 10 playoffless years and i can't help but say this is by far the best roster he's been on yet. He wasn't on any teams that would exactly contend. No knock to your squad or nothing bro just keeping it real. Shit if Fitz was there now i think he'd do well because you guys are light years better than you were then. Guess we'll see soon enough. If he can keep the turnovers low, we'll be a scary team
In the three years Fitz had a majority of the starts, the Bills were as high as 22nd and as low as 26th in total D. The big achilles heel was the run D, where they were anywhere from 27th to 32nd. It was horrendous watching teams run at will, running out the clock, then having Fitz try and generate a game tying/winning drive, only to see the inevitable INT. Ironically, Fitz does have a team record for the longest TD pass in team history (98 yard to Terrell Owens) http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2009112204/2009/REG11/bills@jaguars?icampaign=GC_schedule_rr#menu=gameinfo|contentId:09000d5d8146a9c5&tab=analyze
The INTs bother me too. Every time I saw him play, which was not a lot, he threw INTs at key points. Or maybe the INTs were the key Points? What I mean is, I never worried about him as an opponent. Not sure he was surrounded by scary players on his offense, though. I am not enthused by this, but Geno was a very big X factor too. Geno playing well was a much better option, but that was not guaranteed. Not by a long shot. Ideally, an older Fitz who did not fling the ball around would be an okay package, given the hand we were dealt.
Based on our current talent base the journeyman vet is the guy you want on the field this year. Too many players are going to be gone in two years. There's no point in living with a young QB's follies and then yanking the rug out from under him just as he starts to step up his game. Geno will never be good enough given the talent around him. If Petty sits for a year or two and actually has what it takes he'll be a good QB to open up the next window with, this assuming that the guys who drafted him and coached him haven't been run out of town on a rail because the QB the last regime picked couldn't manage to keep things together. If Geno really turns a corner then things are different but they're not guaranteed even then. Sanchez turned a corner in 2011 just in time to get killed by his offensive line and the general talent decline. Timing is important.
101, I know you were touting Smith's alleged maturity the last few weeks, but aside from the obvious fact it is easy to applaud someone who agrees with me, heh, I do think even objectively you deserve plaudits for taking into account new information, which is more than can be said for some of the pro-SMith fans here. Yes, Smih showed the opposite of maturity in his encounter with IK. He took the chance to prove himself. Then he blew it. Stand up move on your part, though. Congrats.
1985, about 161, At this point whether the game slows down or not for Smith is a very small part of the picture. He's got larger issues with the Jets. How can the team extend the experiment into next season, which is what Smith Fans will demand, it being in fairness logical to say that expecting him to come back mid-season after no doubt significant weight loss and conditioning issues on top of missing the rest of camp and then mid season practices that would have occurred by then is not "fair". That concept of fairness would logically require he gets another camp and extend it into the 16 season. But given the team leadership and judgment issues on top of all the other concerns about him, I can't see the Jets doing that. I sense that you agree in your acknowledgement of 101's point. There are larger issues here than the game slowing down. Which imo was not going to happen, anyway.
When Geno comes back and if he still shows improvement on the field then yes I think you bring him back next season to compete for the starting job. Not just hand it to him.
BB's point is he is not coming back. And the Jets owe Geno absolutely nothing to allow him to have another shot in 2016. Next year will be the last of his rookie deal. They don't have to necessarily cut him after 2015, he could ride the bench in 2016, but his time as the starter/leader of the offense is over.
I wouldnt be surprised if the Jets deal Geno at the end of the year. He is snake-bit and needs a change of scenary.
