Yeah I'm not so sure about that. He was a shitbag for sure but a supremely talented one that I think would have risen above the fray here. We'll never know. _
There's just too many. We could go over the course of Jets history and we could write a novel on it. The John Idzik one, prob the biggest "herp a derp" failure as a QB was right there in your face waiting to get drafted.
Here's a good article. He and Steinberg had him rated as the best player in the draft. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...ects-on-jets-and-the-almost-brett-favre-trade _
Favre was addicted to pills and alcohol while in GB. NY wouldn't have made a difference in regards to Favre being a diva. Dick pics would still get sent out, but just 20 years earlier.
If Teddy and Carr excel this year, I'm going down to Miami and personally dropping a big hot wet steamer on his desk. _
Bruce Coslet was the one who wanted Nagle after all. I forgot about that. Wolf said it in the NFL Network Documentary of Brett Favre as well, Favre got into that car accident his senior year. Doctors were skeptical about him playing in the NFL; they said maybe a 5 year window. Wolf didn't care he said.
Everything I've heard about Favre's time in ATL indicates that he was boozed up and partying until dawn. If he made it to practice, he was a complete mess when he got there. If I were that guy's coach, I'd hate him, too. Yeah, he still had some problems in GB, but in a place where all the parties close down at 9 pm, and where the local media and population wanted to protect, rather than make headlines out of him, he had a lot better chance to succeed. I suspect we actually came out better with Nagle than we would have with young Brett.
addicted to alcohol with 1 or 2 bars that they can find him and drag his ass home vs. all of NY to get lost in. Plus Green Bay had a great coaching staff to bring out his abilities. Holmgren, Gruden, Mariucci all worked with the QBs together early in his GB tenure. here in NY he'd a been a trainwreck off the field working with the crappy coaches we had here on the field. I don't sweat missing out on Favre at all, he'd been another bust if he came here. There's sure fire HOFers then there's guys like Favre who seriously could've gone either way in this league if not for circumstances all aligning
I absolutely see them taking the next step this year. Teddy's got AP back and people in Oakland are calling Cooper, the next Tim Brown. Not a big deal at all.
The Byrd injury is obviously a moment we would all prefer not to have happened, but staying in the spirit of the thread I would erase Vinny rupturing his Achilles. That was a great team and if Vinny had played anything like he did the season before we could have made it to the Super Bowl. Even the post-injury Vinny of 2000 would have been enough to make us serious contenders, especially considering Keyshawn was still here in '99.
Thanks for the additional info and correction that it was the Cards not the Chargers who reneged on the deal. Was Wolf just speechless when Arizona backed out of the deal, or did he try to offer more? I can't remember, but was that Wolf's first year as a GM? It sounds like it may have been since he didn't have a contingency plan in place. Some other team could have surprised and taken Favre. He should have had a backup/contingency plan in place if that happened. Knee-jerk reactions are never good.
The Miami Fake Spike play. I was at that game, and in an instant we went from competing for the division to losing Pete Carroll and bringing in Rich Kotite. I don't think any single play in any of the AFC Championship games would have 100% changed the result. HM -- #99 roughing the passer against Cleveland.
When Wolf told the story, Az didn't call them and tell them they were backing out, they just went up to the podium and made the selection. Wolf said the draft room was "apoplectic" and immediately took the Nagle card to the podium. They never got a chance to offer more. _
No question, I'd send Doug Brien's second FG attempt at the end of the game against Pittsburgh in 2004 sailing through the uprights. The Jets would have then had the chance to stop one of the Patriots super bowl victories, and possibly win their own in the process.
Parcells trading Belichick to the Patriots after after the courts upheld that BB was contractually obliged to be HC of NYC spoken totally in hindsight
I agree. Add Andy Reid too. It took Holmgren, and everything in his power to coach, and keep Favre on track. I believe Favre should've won more Championships. Always thought that too. Except I still wish we had him instead of Nagle. I also believe the '08 team was on course to do major damage but for his injury
BINGO! That was the moment for me. It would have changed everything. Even a Super Bowl appearance would have been nice at least the Jets can say they've been there recently. But no, we continue to our Superbowl drought.
