Our new OLB Coach Mark Collins seems to be a Coples fan.
I'm very interested how Bowles & Rodgers will use him, especially with Sheldon out for the first 4 games. Wish he'd lose about 20 pounds and drop down to around 260, he could be a monster at that weight if he works on his explosiveness. At 280+ pounds he's a bit too heavy to be a very effective 3-4 OLB, especially since he's being asked to drop back in coverage. I can't remember too many good, heavy OLB's. Willie McGinest is kind of the only one I can think of and I don't even know how big he was but he had to be around 6'6 - 270 or something. Other than that all the elite OLB are in the 240-265 range.

This is one of the headlines on NFL.com, but here on our site it has ZERO replies to this thread?

    Yep it's the off-season.

No one gets excited over Quint anymore. Most just want to see what he brings this season as he's absolutely failed to excite anyone up until now. Most try to stifle a yawn when his name comes up.

    I mean....Coples is a beast.

He basically turned Maurice-Jones Drew into a Punter. How many LBs can say that.

Coples is the wild card for our defense

If he shows on a consistent basic why he was a 1st round pick then this D is going to be elite.

Barring injuries all the other pieces (d-line, secondary) are givens.

Pass rush is the only question mark.

Coples is going to be the difference in whether we're good or great on D this year.

I don't wholly agree. Secondary is not a lock. CB is a lock. Safety is a very questionable position. Marcus Gilchrist was a huge problem on the Chargers and Calvin Pryor is a huge mystery. Pryor could either be terrible like he was last year or start to get better. Either way, safety is a concerning position.

I just think we upgraded so much at the CB spot that even if the safeties arent that great it will still be a major strength.

Worst comes to worst Jarrett and AA can fill in valuably back there.

I think the dude gets a bad rap.

I'm not saying he's a stud, but his rookie year he was playing a WAY different role, the next he broke his ankle, missed the whole preseason and prob didnt get into "game shape" until game 5 or so. Last year he was fairly solid, but he gets overlooked by the fact that the JETS have drafted two studs on the DL withing the past few years.
I think he has a good season this year

Do U have the foggiest idea how many times this same article has been written about HI NYJ draft choices who appear to be a bust? QC is another hi draft choice that is right now on the draft bust bubble. You show by your play if U got it or not (see SR or DR just to name a couple) & for sure up to now QC falls on the bust side of the ledger:mad:

One thing I found interesting was when Mo Wilkerson got hurt last year. Coples stepped in for him and there was no drop off at the position at all.

Makes me wonder if Coples has been playing out of position so far, and if there is a lot more to be seen from him. Also possibly another reason why the FO isn't rushing to get the Wilkerson deal done.

Coples will always be a victim of his scouting report. People will call him lazy and takws plays off although no one will ever have any specific play to show.

i don't see Pryor as much of a mystery. We know what he is going to do in this defense. He'll roam in the box as a SS.. hitting hitting hitting!!! we know if not anything else the kid can knock somebody on their ass and he has very good pursuit. He's pretty bad in coverage but we knew that when we drafted him.. But Bowles likes to run with 3 safeties a lot so we won't have to worry about his coverage that often.. hopefully . I think Gilchrist is going to be the guy we complain about every week on here lol.

Have to agree with this, also not sure the previous coaching staff was using him in a way that would use all his physical skills.

  16. I think Coples is what he is.A Slightly better version of Bryan Thomas.

He's a plus match-up in a lot of different formations/roles & does a lot of little things well. But he's not the "play maker" so many expected him to be.

The reason why Rex liked him is that he was a height/weight/speed guy w/ a lot of versatility.

Chandler Jones didn't impress Rex as much b/c he couldn't get as exotic with his role.

I think he's a good athlete w/ great size who is a fine addition to this defense.I'm just looking elsewhere for the more "flashy" production.

I say let Coples do his own Thang. It is effective

U sound just like they said about that Penn State RB who we took #2 fumbled in a MNF in Chicago & disappeared. His summer hype from our esteemed CS during TC was he will run more north/south rather then east/west. I bet U know the rest of this story. All this is just TC BS & until ANY player proves he can play they U must figure that they cannot like the player I mention or German Jets all time favorite VG

Coples has always been misused by us. He plays best as a 4-3 dt and we keep trying to fit him into an outside role. He plays better inside.

People act like dropping 20 pounds while maintaining the same strength is some easy feat. He'll be entering his 4th year in the league and as far as I know he came out at 280. That's about 5 years playing at the same weight with a very tall and long frame.

Coples really just is the player he is. He's pretty much a Calvin Pace clone although I think he could play end in the 3-4. Good run stopper, can disrupt plays in the backfield and picks up an occasional sack. Whether he drops weight or adds weight this season will tell us whether he's hit his ceiling or not. Outside of the Patriots in selecting Chandler Jones, we got a better player than most other teams picking after us in that draft did.

He could lose some fat. Dropping 10-15 pounds wouldn't hurt him in terms of strength, he's already strong as an ox. But it would make him a lot more explosive. You rarely see guys that big put up 10+ sacks (at LB). If he's a full time DE his weight would be perfect but standing up and dropping in coverage and coming off the edge he really needs to lose a couple in my opinion. 265-270 would be great if he's at 280 now even though he's listed at 290.
