Gerry Philbin, Big Bad John Elliott, Verlon Biggs, Paul Rochester Honorable Mention: Ralph Baker, Al Atkinson, Larry Grantham, Carl Macadams
The whole defense was stacked: DL- Gerry Philbin, Big Bad John Elliott, Verlon Biggs, Paul Rochester LB's- Ralph Baker, Al Atkinson, Larry Grantham Secondary- Billy Baird, Jim Hudson, Randy Beverly, Johnny Sample
Mo was a good, consistent LB, but he wasn't a great one imo. I think Jets fans overrate him. He certainly wasn't the defensive equal Klecko, Philbin or Grantham.
LOL at your comment about Revis. Gastineau deserves some love, but no Klecko? no Philbin or Grantham? Why McNeil? I liked Freeman a LOT, but he couldn't stay healthy and wasn't a dominant RB. If Riggins had remained a Jet, I could understand people wanting to put him there, but not McNeil or Martin.
Jets had many LB's better than Mo Lewis- Ralph Baker, Al Atkinson, Larry Grantham, Bob Crable, Lance Mehl, Kyle Clifton
Thanks for posting this. Your stats on CuMar show why he doesn't belong in this discussion. He didn't fumble much, but when he did, it was usually in a critical situation and/or a big game. Think the Denver playoff game. He has as many fumbles as TDs in playoff games. He only averaged 75 yards rushing in playoff games. IMO he always seemed to come up small in big moments and against tough opponents. Most of his yardage was racked up against weaker teams. He was a solid performer, consistent, worked hard, great citizen and teammate, was good all around in everything, but not great in anything. I just don't understand the hero worship for him that some Jets fans have. There's no way he was better at his position than Klecko, Gastineau, Grantham, or Philbin were at theirs.
I had forgotten that Maynard didn't play in SB III. Thanks for the reminder. I really thought at the time that his not being able to play was going to kill the Jets' chances. He was so huge for the Jets. His not playing made the Jets win all the more important and amazing.
Isn't it sad that the majority of our players to be considered for a team mount rushmore are from before 1985?
Hey--I loved Kyle, don't get me wrong. But that's what I remember of him. He was an all time great Jet (like Kenny O'Brien). _
I did consider Philbin, Gantham and Klecko, as I stated in my comment, MG, was our JJ watt, he was a truly dominant player as a DE, regardless of his dancing, Klecko in my opinion was a smidge below MG. I have a lot of love for Freeman, and I remember watching those games and seeing him get up slowly because of his propensity for injuries and going back in and playing, it just made me respect him a lot more. Maybe I give him too much credit, but until CM came over, he was still drafted by the Jets, was their leading rusher and still was one of a few RB in the history of the NFL to retire with a 4.0 yards per carry every year of his 12 year career. Would I have loved it if he was like my second favorite RB?( Dickerson) of course, but I have appreciation for what he did as a Jet. JMO
