I never knew that, but then I would have been 12 or 13 when that happened, and NC newspapers at the time didn't have much about the NFL, much less about the AFL Jets. I'm surprised that I haven't seen it on a Jets fan site somewhere over the years, however. Thanks for the info.

Truly a low point for any Jets that was around for that loss to Miami. To this day the lowest for me. In hindsight it was prolly best that they moved on from Walt, but that was the game we should've won to get to the SB. It still kills me to this day when I go back to it. It really was. We kicked the shit out of the Bengals in the Wildcard game and beat the Raiders in one of the hardest- fought games I've ever seen to this day- imho very similar to the Jets- Raiders Championship game of '68. I was convinced we would easily beat the Dolphins... until game day. Sadly you know the rest of the story.
Yep. They beat the two best teams, in the AFC anyway, at that point. It brings up the hate I have for Don Shula...brutal to this day
You're right. I don't think I've ever seen that anywhere else. One of the few advantages of old age, I guess. I go back to the Don Maynard- Art Powell NY Titans. Weren't there a few Jets exhibition games in the south during their AFL years? I'm sure one was in Birmingham and I vaguely remember one in NC.
I was looking for some info about that game and what little I could find (all hearsay) said either the Dolphins didn't put the tarp on the field or Shula had the sprinklers turned on the night before. Jimmy Cefalo's comment is the best I could find. Most of the posters here are to young to remember, but the TD to Maynard in the 68 AFL title game is it for me.
The field was left uncovered the nite B4 the game & that nite the heavens opened up thus the next next day the field was muddy which affected the play of BOTH teams. It must have affected Richard Todd more since he threw INTs that were turned into TDs. After that game the tarp rule was implemented
That was a pretty play but the MOST important play ever in NYJ history was recovery of the lateral in that game that sent them up to the SB
I'll have to trust your memory. There may have been exhibition games in the south, but I don't remember them. In those days in at least my area of NC, the sports pages focused on baseball, and not much on football or other sports. I became a Jets fan when Joe Namath was drafted, so was unaware of the Titans.

carl, Thanks. Interesting site, but I don't see where the Jets played in NC in '67 & '69. According to that list only the Washington Redskins and old Chicago Cardinals played exhibition games in NC. Where is the info on the Jets? I searched in the Exhibition game list and found nothing for the Jets, 1969 or NC. The same goes for 1967.
Under the NYJs lease with the NYMs they WERE NOT ALLOWED to play in Shea until the BB season terminated so that made them vagabonds for the xhibition games & usually the 1st 5 games of new season. They played xhibition games in prison as well as in the south during this period of time. I can not remember the exact states but I think NC was one of the states they played in when blacked out of Shea

Correct, Champ. And those removable seats were ridiculous, tho at least they improved capacity from 55,000 to 61,000 iirc. Don't recall them playing a game at a prison but I do remember they had to hold practices at Rikers Island while the Mets were still playing. The '69 and '73 seasons were the worst because the Mets made it to the world series and the Jets couldn't get into the stadium until late October. One of the many reasons they moved to NJ.
1982 game at Minnesota. Gastineau blocks a 25 yd FG attempt, ball rolls around a bit and is finally scooped up by Darroll Ray. Ray runs fifteen yards, and as he's going down laterals to Bobby Jackson who goes the remaining 80 yards to the house. Jackson later had a 77 yard INT return for a TD. Jets win 42-14 despite the fact that Minnesota ran 94 offensive plays, had nearly 500 yards total offense, and controlled the clock for 40 minutes. Jets improved to 6-2 and clinched a playoff berth.
The Jets sure have had an interesting history...just not a great one. I swear...every time the Jets manage to get in the playoffs, there's a certain sense of foreboding that tags along. What if. Part and parcel of being a fan of this team. Tell me again how good this kid Petty is.
