You do realize, Geno at best has a 2 game leash if he performs poorly right? Plus, this is not on just Chan - this decision, I believe was also made by Bowles. Fitz already knows the system, if Geno fucks up - Chan knows Fitz can come in and command the huddle. Geno does have more upside, so they want to make sure they do their diligence. 2 game min. Geno messes up, Geno is done.
But that's not his quote. He never used the words "Jets won't have QB competition," did he? He literally said "At this moment in time."
People are fucking stupid, I bash Geno just as much as anyone else here, but it's plain to see - if the guy takes a big step, he's going to give us the best chance to win going forward for a long time. People asking for Chan's head - don't even bother watching the Jets this season. I really hope Geno proves me wrong - I don't think it will happen, but never say never.
A bit of a over reaction but I do agree. Doesn't the starter barely get playing time in exhibition games? U can't evaluate this guy in one quarter of actual playing time. I wanted to see how he plays against other teams not scrimmage. He was giving the job two straight years and he was barely watchable. Chan Gailey must want to retire early. Lord help us..
Everyone overreacting to this is an idiot. Chan Gailey did not make a universe-binding law by saying he anticipates Geno starting week 1. Geno will be getting the starter reps. If he struggles, and Fitzpatrick doesn't struggle, Fitz will start week 1. If Geno doesn't struggle, Geno will start week 1. Thread over.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports Yet again, Geno Smith is being handed the job of starting quarterback. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey revealed Wednesday that the Jets won’t have a competition at quarterback heading into training camp, and that Smith is the starter. For what it's worth..
I'm sorry, I respect anyone who suits up on Sunday .... But I loathe geno. So much for my optimism for the upcoming season
Of course he didn't but just implying and stating Geno is the starter is enough to make (dare I say) the majority of Jet fans puke. And who in sports management would make a universe-binding law statement?
This is kind of an amazing statement by Gailey that really came out of left field. Geno did finish the season well last season. Maybe Gailey has been impressed with him so far. Of course Fitz is coming off of a broken leg. Why sign a guy with a broken leg when you had the chance to sign a healthy vet Qb and not have to give up a draft pick.
I really don't think the statement by itself is a big deal. As someone else stated before, at first it shocks you, then it starts to make sense as the quarterbacks and coaching staff don't have to worried about getting harassed over the quarterback controversy. We'll see how the coaching staff ultimately handles the situation in season. If Geno is 16 for 42 with 1 touchdown and 4 picks through two weeks and he's starting week 3 then we have a problem. Gotta love reading the overreactions though. It always makes this board fun when the sky is falling over a coaching statement.
Couldn't agree more. This is lip service. If you look at the team's actions and comments between trading for Fitzpatrick and Bowles sounding lukewarm on Geno, seems like they just trying to keep media from distracting players.
I think we can all agree that Fitz is not the future QB, Geno is not likely the future QB, and Petty is too raw to get on the field. In this light, doesn't it make sense to start Geno (final evaluation)? If yes, why is this a big deal to announce it now to avert future distractions? If you're gonna do it anyway, might as well state it upfront. To me this is a plus for the new FO -- no BS, straight way of conducting business.
If Geno does lose a lot of games, then we get a decent DP again and perhaps this time the BPA will be an offensive player for once.. Just looking on the bright side.
Is Petty quick enough to be a starter in the NFL. We know he has the arm but can he read and react. He came into a good situation here. This is not an all star Qb he has to beat out.
