D'Brickashaw Ferguson has locked the left tackle position down for 10 years, but he is nearing the end (take a look at his cap hit next year). This team also has ZERO depth at the position. If D'Brickashaw went down who would be his replacement?

Giacomini is not far off from Wayne Hunter on the other side as well.....

I suspect they will next year. This is going to be a make or break year for all of the Idzik OL holdovers, and the team will have a much better idea how to move forward past this season.

I expect the team to take a OL in round 1 next year, but it's very early.

I can't see the Jets paying Brick $14.1+ million next season. I also can't see him taking a $7 million per year pay cut. By cutting Brick, the Jets would incur a dead money cap hit of $5 million and change, but would save over $9 million vs the cap. It doesn't matter if it's a pre-June 1 cut or post-June cut. Thus, I expect the Jets to cut Brick loose and to draft an LT in the 1st round. I would imagine that Mac will have to trade up to get the one he wants, but may be able to stay put or even trade down. He probably will look to sign another older vet for a cheaper contract somewhere in the $4-7 million per range. I would imagine that RT would be a strong priority in FA next season, but if they're unable to find someone in FA, then that will become a priority in the draft as well.

Maybe restructure Brick's contract or cut him and sign him back to a cheaper contract. I would prefer to draft a tackle in the later rounds next year to develop for a year or two behind Brick.

if I had to guess we'll probably focus heavily on oline next offseason...brick is a huge candidate for a restructure and we'll need to infuse the future with young signings via free agency and the draft. although we do have some rookies last year who displayed some potential, so we might have something at a guard spot already. Heading into next year we'll likely need to focus on LT, C, and G.

in terms of your other comments, what are you talking about?

we've actually got quite a bit of depth heading into this year, and breno is nowhere near wayne hunter. our oline certainly isn't dallas but it's nowhere near as dire heading into 2015 as you make it seem.

What Macc is probably thinking is good O-Lineman like Brick and Mangold can play well into their 50's.

    They shouldn't cut Brick.

If nothing else you trade him for whatever is left on his contract....

(read the article on how compensatory picks work)

Next year we should invest heavily on our left tackle of the future (through free agency or the draft - the second option may involve trading up).

If Brick is willing to take a pay cut and move to left guard our front line could be incredible next year.

  9. I think you've got to give both Brick & Mangold 2 more years if the financial part can be figured out.Despite both being declining players they are still solid performers & if there is one area where experience pays dividends it's on the O-line.They have been sturdy building blocks for the Jets for a long time...and they deserve to go out in green & hopefully shoot for a title.

Back-up OT is a major concern.Ijalana I suppose would be the answer but he's so-so.Another option is Willie Colon has played Tackle..including LT w/ the steelers.Problem is he might not even make this roster.
Aboushi is already splitting reps w/ Colon...it's extremely early..but I liked what I saw from Aboushi last season..he's poised to only get better. He's really quick off the snap w/ some nice pop at initial contact. He reminds me of former solid Jet Dan Alexander. Meanwhile,I dunno about others but I actually thought Dakota Doozier showed a lot of potential last preseason. He was very good in pass protection both w/ his feet & a very nice recovery anchor. His run blocking needed alittle work in terms of pad level as well as movement but those things can be coached or fixed in the weight room. I'd expect some competition at Guard both starting LG & back-up spot(s).

We have like 10 new lineman between last year and this year that HAVE to be eyeballing Brick's and Mangold's positions. Hopefully one or two of them has spent the offseason shaping up and working in one of those camps so they can compete for a big bucks job in a year or two.

Brick's play has already gotten pretty bad. Even at a reduced rate, you want to wait another year or two before replacing him? Sorry, but that's just nuts imo. Great way to get your young QB killed.

Brick would not be a good OG candidate. I wish you guys would stop with that nonsense. He's a bad run blocker. His pass blocking is slipping. He doesn't have the size or strength to be a successful OG. Do you guys pay any attention at all? SMH

I'm sorry, but unless he has a miraculous resurgence this season, the idea of starting Brick for 2 more years is insane. Totally insane. That's the best way I know to insure that the Jets don't have a quality QB or offense.

D'brick has been a great NY Jet but I do think we have to restructure his contract to even consider keeping him. Mangold on the other hand is still consistently ranked near or at the top as a center, and I'd like to see him locked up for at least 2 more years for sure.

He's declined but he's not THAT bad. We need to develop someone behind him for at least a year before we throw him in the bushes.

  16. No he isn't the Brick of old. But he is still reliable & you never see him get dominated.History has shown that experience counts on the OL & there have been plenty of SB teams that sported graybeard LT's who were considered to be declining players.Roman Oben,Gary Zimmerman, & Luke Petigout come to mind.
A long term answer behind Brick definitely needs to be explored sooner rather than later..and MAYBE 2 more years is a slight stretch but Brick is still a very solid player & at this point arguably a Jets great. He gets the benefit of the doubt.

Try to think back and remember Alan Faneca.

We haven't had a guard as mobile as him very often. Brick's mobility for a LT is getting worse but he has extremely quick feet for a guard. He would be a huge upgrade over what we have had at guard since we lost Moore & Slauson.

  18. I would only question that move in a "ground & pound" style of offense. He's not gonna give you much pop on the interior. But pass pro wise he'd be fantastic w/ his long arms & quick feet. He'd be a great asset in a true spread "pass first" offense.

Was curious to hear your opinion on Aboushi since you referred to quickness in our guards. I think he still needs to get stronger & improve some finer points but mobility & quickness wise he's fantastic.Extremely quick off the snap..my opinion of course.

I've also mentioned that I like the move of Winters to Center. Yes he was awful at guard specifically man-up & isolated but he does move really well both laterally & at the 2nd level. He's a surprisingly good blocker in space. Those are the types of traits that translate well to the Center position. If he still struggles he's likely gone though..Daulton Freeman isn't a horrible back-up..

IF he lasts long enough in the draft next year, Petty's LT at Baylor would be a really good pick for the Jets. Spencer Drango is currently projected as a 1st Rounder in next years draft. This will be his third year as the starting LT for Baylor. Many NFL Scouts compare him to Zach Martin for the Cowboys.
