Smith has already been given more than a fair shake. He sucks.

Petty is a fourth round pick. Sure, his potential fills us with great optimism and excitement but there should be no realistic expectation that he is our starter this season.

I've been critical of Fitz but his experience alone is more valuable than Petty's raw talent.

I dont know which QB's make us contenders and which makes us losers.

I think 20TD-12INT's makes us playoff contenders. Whichever QB can deliver those results should be the starter. I dont give a shit who it is lol.

Not in the system we're moving forward with. Fitz will have limited chances to compete this off season because of injury compared to Geno, Geno has more of a rapport with the guys on offense than Fitz, and he has a higher ceiling if everything goes right.

Petty isn't ready yet, he just won't be.

If Geno's first game or two he's the same old Geno, by all means switch him out for Fitz who is familiar with the system and ride him til the end of the season while Petty learns.

In the meantime, Geno should be given a chance, however small, to prove he can be the QB we want him to be. No harm done if he can't.

Watch Simms beat out Geno for the final QB spot on our roster.

Why is everyone assuming this? Russell Wilson (11-5) and Andy Dalton (9-7) are examples of two non first round QB's that started as rookies and posted winning seasons. The Jets have enough talent right now to be a playoff contender. All that's required is steady coaching and play from the QB position that doesn't constantly give away games like last season. From what I've seen and heard about Petty, it is not beyond the realm of possibilities that he might actually beat out all the other QB candidates as did Wilson in Seattle a few years ago.

If the "competition" mantra rings true, you may have a case.

So far the general consensus seems to be that it's not if, but when.

Both Wilson and Dalton were 4 year starters coming into the NFL with 50 starts under their belts. Petty has 25 starts. Petty is not ready and if the Jets throw him out there right away they will ruin another QB IMO

I think the first question is: how fast can he pick up the offense. From there: can he read defenses. 3rd: self discipline on the field. Is he willing to take a secondary role (game manager) and not attempt unnecessary throws. Which lead to Sanchezesque turnovers. And finally: does he have the talent to take it up a level and eventually be a full service Qb. Or accept a permanent role as a game manager.

Petty has his Master's degree and is very intelligent. I think he can pick up the offense very quickly, especially if Gailey is going to be incorporating spread concepts into the offense. I think he can read defenses better than he is given credit for. In the Baylor offense each play had multiple options with the final call being made by the QB. He had to read the defense post-snap and then decide to hand off to the RB, dump it off, throw deep to a number of receivers or tuck it and run. All of this while running one of the fastest and most potent offenses in the nation. As far as self-discipline, he holds the NCAA record for the lowest passing interception percentage for a career at 1.18%. I think he can do it, but he is also one that if he has to wait on the sidelines for a year , he will. He is the perfect team player and leader.

The problem we've had with the Jets is Qbs like Sanchez who don't know their limitations. Mark has the skill set to play in the NFL but not the mindset. Even when he'd play well you would just wait for him to get overconfident and throw a pick. More often than not in the red zone. Guys with great arms like Petty sometimes tend to go to the well too much. They attempt to thread the needle and in the NFL that gets them burned. Because good Dbs can read them and set them up for mistakes. I hope you're right about Petty because there is a job opening here.

That's true, just because they say there is open competition there really isn't when money is on the line.

And not to diminish accomplishments but everyone reveres this whole Master's degree thing but I don't see how it translates

No because he's mostly stating fact and isn't touting Petty as some superstar that needs to be let loose aka the Geno/WVU clan.

He has his masters. His offense did have some reads and play calls at the line. His INT% is what it is. He'll sit and wait a year (he's done it before). He's a team player and a leader.

The opinion parts he qualifies with "I think" rather than "It be".

    Do you have a Masters?

You don't get one taking phys Ed or basket weaving or no show classes or having tutors writing papers for you.

You have to have some booksmarts to get one.

Even if it's in Sports Management.

I don't think our current QB is close to his Masters.
