Petty won't start this season, but I hope they will consider him mid-season once he gets the playbook mostly down. He might have too much throwing talent not to start. I don't believe in Geno, I never really have. I don't think he's gonna be good. He'll win the starting job because Fitz is injured, but I believe he'll be benched by Week 3/4 in favor for Fitzpatrick. I don't think Fitzpatrick will be that good either. Therefore, I hope they at least consider Petty once he has fulfilled his learning responsibilities.
I just don't want him to start this season. Unless he's mopping up a thoroughly won game, he shouldn't be seeing the field - that's how I would have it, if that means anything.
The only reason people don't want him to start is because they think he needs to learn how to read coverages and learn the playbook. I agree. But what I'm saying is if he learns it fast and has it down by mid-season then there is no reason not to start him. If he's learning slow and isn't ready by midseason then I agree not to start him all season.
I can give you one reason why you wouldn't start him even if he has it figured out If we have a winning record with who ever is behind center or even a .500 record Geno and Fitz are going yo play out this season we have no reason to throw petty into the fire this year and if we do that means we are probably in the running for the 1st overall pick
We don't really have any QB that is an obvious choice to start. Anointing Geno Smith as the chosen one over Sanchez (don't get me started on the injury) and Simms who clearly outplayed him in pre-season did not work out so well. I think they should let all of our QBs fight it out in camp. I really don't care if it ends up being Matt Simms but the player who comes out on the top of a fair competition is the best choice for starter. There is no reason that our QB of the future can not learn from the bench for now. If Petty is our best QB but our coaches decide it would be best for his development not to throw him into the fire right away I could live with that even if it means watching Geno for a few more starts.
Sure. Somebody wins the lottery every week. That's right. But you won't. ============================================ Look. Petty never even had a PLAYBOOK while playing at Baylor. Now he has to learn the entire offensive system starting with the verbiage, protection call, check sign and whatnot. Like him or not, but GeNO has been studying that for now 3 years. Fitzpathetic, even more. And somehow Petty beats BOTH of them out THIS YEAR? That's just not happening. All right?
Geno wasn't ready in 2013 then he wasn't ready in 2014 he still started. I wouldn't rule out Petty starting as a rookie BUT the Jets have a competent veteran QB in Fitzpatrick now. He's not Brunell or Garrard or Vick. On paper the Jets look like a playoff team the D looks nasty across the board with Brady likely getting suspended 3-6 games who knows even the AFC East title could be in play in 2015. PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEAAAASE go with Fitzpatrick!!! Petty's time will come no need to rush. The Jets don't need a savior in 2015.
Well technically Geno's got a different playbook this year too. Fitz is the only one really 'familiar' with Gailey's system. But yeah there's no reason Petty should play this year, and no way it's the best option unless the dude has a photographic memory and can apply everything at the snap of a finger.
I hope your right but to me he has shown nothing to to say he can be a good qb ya he's had some decent games here and there but overall has been horrible Does he have the tools to be good yes does he have the brain to be good to me he doesn't but I hope he proves me wrong since he is getting 1st crack at the starting spot
Then there's that whole learning to call plays in the huddle and take a snap from under center thing. No big deal.
Ftr I have no idea how much Petty would have to learn to be starting as the Qb. I get that there's a general aversion to rushing him, the theory being that bad experiences playing can counter teh benefit of learning by playing. Whether that's true or not depends on the person and the situation. I just don't want to se Smith play another down for the team. Hopefully Fitz is healthy and starts the season, and that is that.
I'd rather give Geno a fair shake. He has more potential than Fitz. If he can't do it, though, no worries. Its his deadline anyways. Let Petty watch Fitz run a system has its meant to so he has a better shot at starting next year.
Gotta love this board, if Fitz isn't 100% then anybody we drag off the street can be as good or better than Smith so I'm all for Petty getting his chance.
I posted this in February. I agree 100% that Fitz should be the day one starter with Geno as #2 and Petty #3.
