I missed this when he was drafted, and while it's not astrophysics, it's certainly impressive.

Here is my question about Petty (Who I was high on before the draft and wanted to take in the 2nd Round): What would it take for him to start in 2015? If he looks good in preseason, about equal to Geno and Fitz, what do you do? I would say sit him still. I hope the coaches seriously give all 3 guys a fair shake though. We know it is Geno's job to lose, but he could easily lose it.

    Winstons first day. Mixed reviews:
TAMPA, Fla. -- As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got off the bus Friday morning, they were greeted by their new leader.

Quarterback Jameis Winston, the first overall pick in the 2015 draft, got off the bus first. He then stood at the door, shaking the hands of his new teammates as they came off the bus.

"It was an exciting time," Winston said. "I was excited. I wanted to get everyone else involved and excited. I got a couple smiles coming off the bus. That's all it takes to show those guys I'm here and I'm ready and to make sure they were ready also, and they were."

The greetings came as the Bucs opened a three-day rookie camp. Winston said the move was similar to the way he greeted his college teammates at Florida State before every game. His leadership was one of the qualities that prompted the Bucs to draft Winston.

"Most of the stuff that Jameis does is unscripted," coach Lovie Smith said. "No one told him to greet his teammates. It's kind of who he is. He's a positive guy. I'm not going to have to give him a pep talk every day. That's part of what we like about him. But there's so much more we like too."

Winston's new teammates appreciated the gesture.

"Jameis is Jameis," said Donovan Smith, one of two offensive linemen the Bucs drafted in the second round. "He makes light of every situation and makes you feel comfortable. As a quarterback, that's his job."

Winston's performance on the field came with mixed reviews. During the portion of practice that was open to the media, he connected with Kenny Bell on several deep throws but also missed some open receivers.

"I thought he had a typical first day," Smith said. "You have to have a first day. There were some balls he'd like to have back. But we saw a lot of good things that he did today."

Said Winston: "You've got to get better every day. I'm not going to judge myself on Day 1."

The Bucs were happy to learn that Winston stayed up until 1 a.m. studying his playbook.

"That's what makes him special," Smith said.

Tampa Bay ranked 29th in scoring and 30th in total offense while going 2-14 last season. Josh McCown, last year's starting quarterback, was released, paving the way for Winston -- 26-1 as the starter at Florida State -- to take over right away.

Winston said he is happy the draft process is over and he is able to concentrate on football.

"That's why football is my sanctuary," he said. "I grew up wanting to be a pro football quarterback. I'm here today, and I don't plan on stopping."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

i really liked the Petty selection, and thought it was great value in the 4th..
even if he taps out as a quality backup, who can spot start when called upon, it's still good value. but his ceiling is legit starter you can build around.

playing time in Year 1 is tricky though.
it's tricky for any rookie QB, and he does have a learning curve in system, coaches, speed of the game, dropping back, more complex coverages, and more complex progression decisions needing to be done quicker than ever before.
there's a lot on his plate, and i think he said it correctly when stating, 'it's a mountain to climb'.
it'll take some time to get up there.

never know, but i wouldn't count on it.
lots of preseason work should be in order though, and i'd hope the coaches would experiment with some simple read situations.....ie shotgun 2 read, then outlet or throw it away

it would have to take a double injury.

Petty is redshirted this year and not in the starting QB picture.

If he's equal to Fitz and Geno you sit him. The only way he even stands a chance at starting is if be absolutely blows the 2 out of the water and dominates the preseason games. You'd have to know you've got something special in year 1, ala Wilson

I don't want another young QB until our offense "comes into it's own".

It's a new system (again). Let the OL and receivers figure it out 1st. Let some continuity develop 1st.

Show the young QB some tape of how it's done so he can know exactly how it's supposed to be done.

I think Fitzpatrick will lead us to the playoffs this year. Petty will show promise and we will have him refine his skills by 2016

Yeah, but what do fans no anyway? Think about it, plenty of them think Smith and Sanchez are capable NFL quaterbacks.
