Good QBs last deep into 30's. Taking the example of Brady and Peyton would be absurd; say, good QBs retire at 37 or so. That's good 10+ years from now. All right? Jets should be thinking about how they can raise this kid to be a good QB, not how old that kid is.
It's not just the matter of longevity, the article I posted cited that QBs who are 23+ in their last year of college have already reached physical maturity, and thus have less room to improve at the pro level (and also look better in comparison to college competition)
This is pretty weird but it looks like Petty actually throws a better and more accurate deep ball off of his back foot/while falling away.

Watching Michigan St. right now. He overthrows 3-4 deep balls while stepping into them, then on a couple other occasions the rush gets into his face and he fades away and throws beautiful lobs 30+ yards down field on the spot.
These are mechanical errors that need to be solved by the coaches. His footwork was his biggest physical issue with teams.
Still too early to say for certain, but it does look that way. But at least that draft class had a number of guys teams thought highly enough to draft, which is more than can be said for this years class.
I think Petty is in a better spot than Mariota and Winston. Not saying he's the better prospect, but I think he has a better chance at success because he doesnt have the pressure to be a franchise savior and can take the time to develop and mature. Here is some more background on him:
Have you gone back and looked at some of the other drafts? 1996 there wasn't even a QB taken until around the 44th pick, give or take a slot, back when there were only 30 teams drafting. The only thing that saved this from being a totally abysmal class is the top two, but the juries still out on if one will adjust to the NFL and if the other can keep his ass out of trouble so he can stay on the field.

Easily the best game I've seen him play. Also loved him vs Iowa state in 2013. Lots of promise. He can really rip the short ball on target with a quick release and high accuracy. He's really good at throwing off-platform, something that Gruden pointed out on QB camp. Even when his footwork goes to shit (which happens too much) he has the natural arm talent to put the ball on target with high velocity.
