It's the silly season, teams make all kinds of inquiries about players they'd like to have on their roster to gauge responses as they finalize their draft plans and back up plans. I doubt the Jets trade Mo but if someone makes them a stupid offer they should at least listen.

The issue to me isn't whether they can afford to keep him, they can, its how many years does he want and what's the guaranteed money. Mo is a big body but he's not an elite athlete like a JJ Watt. Guys built like Mo tend to go down hill fast once the decline begins. He's far from decline but its something to consider as they craft the outline for a new deal for him. A 5 yr deal would be great, 7...eeeh.

Mariota is not a franchise QB at this time. That title has not been earned, just because a QB is being drafted high, does not make him a franchise QB.

the draft is not for 2015, if they are convinced he will be a franchise QB whether it's 2-3 years down the road you do everything you can to get him(w/in reason).

    Duh Junc.

That's what I am saying - they have to be convinced. Are they convinced he will pick up the pro style offense? Any other questions in regards to his ability can that be coached and improved? If the answer is no, then that QB to that team is not a franchise QB.

Those questions, no doubt are answered in house prior to the putting the card in.

No QB is a franchise QB because they are potentially being drafted high - the player will have to prove that to the team that drafts him.

Honestly, I hate that title as much as I hate the word "elite" being thrown around when it comes to QBs.

Only way I'm trading Wilk is straight up for MM. We have Coples who ideally (in a 3-4 anyway) is a DE. He would slide in.

Still though, that is irrelevant. The only possible scenario in which trading an All-Pro 25 year old defensive end that was born, raised, went to school in, and now plays in NJ (and was a Jets fan growing up)makes sense is if we could come out of the top-6 with MM and either Cooper or Fowler/Beasley. Or I guess MM and Peat/Flowers/Scherff if we trade down from the 6.

Wilkerson for Luck or Rodgers, otherwise keep him.

I have this feeling it's more about the scheme fit than the player.

A good coach will make a good player work in any scheme but if you feel like you already have proper pieces in place for your scheme without MO, they should trade and get maximum compensation for him now while you can.

    I guess we will see.

I can easily see Coples, Snacks, Douz, and Richardson being more than capable starters for a Bowles defense.

It might even be the best option for Bowles.

only way I'd be cool with it is mo for just in Houston. prolly have to throw in our third as well. Mo is my favorite jet, but if we could get the elite pass rusher we have all been dreaming of I could deal with the heart ache of losing him

Yeah, if Houston wanted to pry him away, it would cost them at LEAST Watt and 3 first rounders.

This is the first I'm hearing about this I'll be pissed off if they trade him.

He deserves to get paid HERE he's been everything the Jets were hoping for when they drafted him. I don't wanna hear/read any baloney excuses about him not fitting in Bowles scheme he's arguably the Jets best player.

    PAY HIM!!!!

Can they pay him at this point without restructuring contracts? Last I heard we had around 10 mill in cap space and have to sign rookies. I imagine he would want 12 per or somewhere in that ballpark.

shouldn't the other teams have to throw in some picks too?

  14. I see your point. Of course if Wilk is traded for a QB who ends up busting it will be viewed in jest. That goes for any failed blockbuster trade...

Additionally, I agree that a trade should not be forced simply due to contractual breakdowns. That card has bit this franchise in the ass WAY too many times. We as fans always rationalize it w/ compensated draft picks that never seem to "save the day"

That said..this seems like teams reaching out to the Jets & the jets doing nothing more than listening. Let's bare in mind that there are a boatload of teams desperate to improve their defensive fronts;Be it Chicago,Atlanta,Indy,Cleveland,Philly..Maybe even Detroit after losing Fairley & Suh. W/ DL prospects stock dropping like flies in the past month or so..that could cause those teams to panic & cause a bidding war for Wilk's services. The Jets could end up w/ an offer they can't refuse.

As for the QBs...I think all our panties are alittle bunched up over the failed Sanchez and failING Geno experiments combined w/ the perception that Andrew Luck was this off the charts sure thing QB prospect. The truth is somewhere in the middle of both of these aspects. Geno & Sanchez didn't work out..but that doesn't mean another QB prospect won't. You take enough talented QBs w/ the proper ceiling & actually surround them w/ a legit surrounding cast & eventually you're gonna find your long term answer. As for Luck...those type of prospects come around once a decade. Other than that..QB prospects will continue to be major question marks no matter the intangibles, physical tools & prior accomplishments. Mariota has all the tools. Yes he comes from a unique spread offense...but so did David Carr & he had quite the rookie campaign..Just sayin.

As for the "Trenches" being the key to games..i used to consider that bible. And football in its purest form works this way.But under the current rules it doesn't work that way anymore. It's a passing league. You need a quality QB w/ ice in his veins & a legit skill corps. If you do not..you aren't gonna put up points..and you can't win if you don't. Jets won ALOT of games up front on both sides of the ball last season..but they lost most of those games on the scoreboard.Keep that in mind

Sounds like a smart thing to say if you're looking to trade a player and maximize your value.
