I never experienced first hand racism until I drove through Alabama on my to Spring Break in Panama City, Florida. We stopped at a fast food chain and when we walked in, it was like a bar scene from a western; everyone stopped doing what they were doing and stared. This wasn't the subtle stare out of the corner of your eye, this was the completely turned around in your seat, no movement, mouth open, what the fuck am I looking at stare... We ordered various things and were told they didn't have them or it would take 30 minutes to make...we left and went to a subway.
