When the season is on the line, Smith has shown two years in a row he will singlehandedly destroy the team. How he does when the other team is already tuning up their golf games for the off season doesn't mean shit.

How about we just bench Geno until week 14 and then start him? The last 2 years he's shit the bed for 12 games then tore up the last 4. Can we just skip the 12 bad ones or does it not work like that¿

RG3 was drafted in round 1, Cousins was drafted in the 4th round. The poster, I had the debate on - wanted to spend our first 2 picks on the QB position. Even so, this plan seemed to have backfired as the coach that helped make those decisions was fired a season later.

I don't mind us drafting Mariota, but I do mind us selecting Hundley in the next round.

Worked for the Seahawks. They waited on their opportunity to grab a QB, just like Belichick getting Brady in the later rounds. They were patient.

The Seahawks did NOT wait. They aggressively tried to address the position until they found their guy in Russell Wilson. In 2010 they traded for Charlie Whitehurst, swapping their early second for San Diego's late second in addition to sending them a 3rd round pick. Then gave him a big contract despite having done nothing in the league up to that point. That year Sam Bradford went 1st overall and the next QB to be drafted in the first was Tim F*cking Tebow. So no wonder they overcompensated and overpaid for Whitehurst. That also marked the last draft under Carroll that they were in position to draft that high. 2 years later they signed Matt Flynn to that ridiculous contract and struck gold with Wilson. Just because you don't draft a QB high in the first, it doesn't mean you are waiting. Belichick wasn't waiting either. He had Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady was a 6th round after thought. I'll repeat "…waiting for a QB" now that a brilliant strategy.

They were aggressive just as we are. We brought in Hoyer, Fitzpatrick, Josh Freeman for visits - we were willing to pay Hoyer more than likely.

2012 - Could've drafted Weeden if they REALLY needed a QB - they decided to wait and take the BPA [Bruce Irvin]. They sat patiently and waited until the 3rd round for Wilson. Seattle didn't even draft a QB to groom behind Hasselbeck in the prior years. What does that tell you? They were patient, they needed a stop-gap, but didn't find an answer until Wilson was picked up. They made some pretty crappy QB decisions that didn't work out, but were any of those QBs drafted? Uh no. All the picks the Seahawks made only 1 QB drafted in 3 seasons. Yeah let's keep drafting QBs for the sake of it.

The fact that you are mentioning Free Agent acquisitions is LOL worthy at best - especially when we are talking about drafting QBs in the draft.

Even better let's keep the human turnover machine. We'll never get the top pick because he knows how to beat teams when the game means squat. I rather keep drafting in search of a REAL QB. JMHO

The realization that Geno Smith will be our starting QB this year is truly amazing, this guy has done absolutely nothing to show he deserves to even be on an NFL roster let alone a starting QB in the league. I didn't even think he would be on the Jets roster this year, he was abysmal, probably the worst QB play I've witnessed for that long of a stretch in all my years of watching football.

Something has to give, we can't go into the season with only Geno and Ryan Fitzpatrick coming off a broken leg as our only options at QB.

The bold is exactly my point. Aggressively trying to address the position includes but is not limited to FA. You act though drafting Wilson was the culmination of some long term plan. No one in their right mind plans on finding their franchise QB in the 3rd round. They thought they had their guy in Whitehurst, next Flynn then got lucky with Wilson.

Bruce Irvin was NOT the BPA; he was projected as a 2nd rounder AT BEST. It was widely agreed by almost everyone covering the draft that year that he was a reach. They drafted for need or want; they did NOT NEED a QB that year because they had just signed Flynn to that big contract. At the time they thought they had the QB situation settled and Flynn would be the long term solution. Wilson was drafted to be the back-up. We are NOT in the same situation. We do NOT have a guy we think solves our QB situation long-term. Had we acquired a QB via FA or trade that fit that bill Mariota would NOT be an option. So drafting Mariota and/or any QB this year will not be just for the sake of it.

The fact that you are mentioning Hassellbeck is LOL worthy as he was part of a completely different regime.

Geno can play catch with Marshall all he wants, but the minute you put a defense up on the screen and ask Geno what do you see ? All of a sudden it is like you are speaking Chineese. You can't fix stupid. Just real tired of a QB that can only run a one read offense with a pre-determined throw.

My issue is when and why you should draft QBs. It has nothing to do with free agency acquisitions. The story on Wilson, they drafted him they believed he could contribute. They obviously wouldn't have drafted him if they didn't believe he couldn't contribute to the team. Luck does play a role and that was one hell of a gamble by the Seahawks. At the end of the day in the draft the Seahawks stayed patient.

Everyone considered Bruce Irvin a reach and I agree with that, but at the end of the day, Seattle believed he was the BPA so they took him over a QB like Weeden - they didn't take a QB just to take one - otherwise don't you think they would've taken 1 in rd1 and then in rd3? Seattle knew they had to upgrade the position, but they stood pat. As of right now Geno Smith is in the same predicament as Whitehurst - it appears before Fitzpatrick gets healthy, they want to give Geno a chance at being that guy. Jets are doing what they can to upgrade the position while they evaluate Geno Smith. Pretty much the same issue as the Seahawks prior to Wilson coming aboard. In the mean-time they built the roster.

Hasselbeck was still an old aged QB, and it doesn't matter what regime - he was getting up there in age and they needed someone to eventually be the QB of the Seahawks.

So yes, the Seahawks did wait in the end - as noted by the fact that they drafted only 1 QB in 3 drafts. They didn't take one each yr, they didn't take one in consecutive rounds. Also, I don't believe the Seahawks truly felt Flynn or Whitehurst would ultimately be the answer, at least that's how I feel unless they said something to the media.

I think you're giving Seattle a bit more credit than they deserve. I don't think they viewed Wilson as a viable starting QB option for them, I think they looked at him as more of a wild cat option. I remember a few weeks before the draft and Herm was talking about the Jets and how they fucked up acquiring the shit show that was Tim Tebow and he said "if they really wanted someone who could run the WC but also throw a little bit, they could probably have this kid Russell Wilson in the 4th round."

They had just signed Flynn to that massive contract which to me indicated that he was their "guy".

Wilson coming in and immediately taking over the building was a massive stroke of luck for them and not something they were patiently waiting on or even had planned out.

It was a complete stroke of luck, I give them major credit on how they pulled that draft. Irvin, Wagner and Wilson in 1 draft? I'm not a huge fan of Irvin at all, but I have to say it was a very calculated plan that included a crap-ton of risk. Seattle GM visited Wilson four times during his senior season. I think they saw something in him that others didn't see (especially us).

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/201...gambles-2012-lead-seattle-seahawks-super-bowl

Wilson, def better then what people gave him credit for prior to the draft. The Flynn contract, awful contract I agree - 10M in guaranteed cash. Flynn lost his job so freaking fast though. I do think Seattle saw something in Wilson that others did not see.

My point in this whole debate, is that if the Jets draft Mariota, I don't want them touching Hundley (or another QB for that matter) in this draft. All the time and resources needs to go to Mariota and him alone.

I don't want them touching Hundley in an event, but certainly not if we take MM.

Yeah, that whole drafting 2 QBs is a silly notion.

You are separating the draft from FA and trades and the 1 QB in 3 drafts in order to make your point valid when it's not. Pete Carroll and company were hired in 2010 and in just a little more than 2 years using the draft, trades and FA, he acquired 3 QBs age 27 or younger with a legitimate chance of being their long tern solution at the position. So he did not patiently wait for one to fall from the sky. The thin FA QB market has already dried up and the trade he did make was for a 32 year old stop gap. So if he plans to follow the aggressive Seattle model, there's work yet still to be done as bringing in journey men QBs for tryouts is NOT aggressively trying to address the position. The avenue that's in the immediate horizon to still apply that aggressive approach you speak is the draft. Had we signed or traded for prior to the draft a guy that still had potential to be a long-term starter for us, then I could understand being patient in the draft.

There's a saying how luck is the residue of design. In the present context I think this is what that means. If you keep trying, as Seattle did, various ways to find a Qb, then perhaps at some point one way will hit. Luck is the term we are using here to describe that hit, in the sense that Seattle did not "know" Wilson would be what they found he was. But he would not have been picked at all if they had not followed a strategy of attempting to upgrade at Qb by using a combination of methods, of different approaches.

Since the Jets do not know of a single path that if followed will lead to getting a franchise Qb, they will be well served by trying a combination of approaches. Yes, that combination should not include measures which on their face are unreasonable, meaning singularly unlikely to pay off. But all reasonable measures should be on the table.

Their "plan" in seattle was to throw shit at the wall and see if it sticks.

There wasn't some calculated patience plan at the QB position where they got their guy to run their organization just at the right time- it was like every other position in their plans in the era where they lead the league in transactions by far- throw shit at the wall, see if it sticks. Wilson was a strike of luck that stuck for them. Flynn, Whitehurst were shit that didn't stick.

Shit -they had the opposite of patience. Hyper in-patience.
