pclfan can I see the receipts? You said he was ranked "next to last", I looked it up and I don't see any rankings with Geno being "next to last". Anyway considering his draft position Geno is getting a chance that most in his position don't usually get. I hope he takes advantage. This might be his last chance.
not to defend geno, because i want mariotta or worst case fitz starting..... but that is the same logic i used a couple years ago: i.e. Mark sanchez is statistically the worst qB in NFL history for any player with 50 or more starts. Can geno smith really be worse then that? the awnser was pretty much yes. he was as bad/worse then mark
im with you. I dont think fitzpatrick is a good player. im dont think he is an average player. our margin to win is so small though, that if we turn it over we wont beat anyone. and I think fitz has a much better chance to limit turnovers as opposed to Geno. i think geno can improve, but honestly i dont see how he ever improves to some top 6-8 QB or someone who is a franchise guy. in which case, just go with the guy most likely to get us wins, which is fitz, since he is less likely to turn it over
I said "among the worst ever" and for last season next to last in the NFL is pretty bad. I based that comment on things I read to that extent and I'll try to find them. But in reality I don't think Geno is among the worst ever and still has promise. But his stats are pretty low. And to say that they are in the all time low category I'll have to look up to verify but I think that's fairly accurate.
I think Mark is worse than Geno just from watching their games. A lot of fans bring up the first Buff game last season but as horrible as he was played only a quarter. Last season Mark outplayed Geno there is no doubt about that. But personally my choice would be Geno over Mark.
Yeah, I agree. The problem with the notion of Smith improving is that he's got such a LONG way to go to be even average, I don't see him ever getting there. And how long would that take? I agree with you about Fitzpatrick. On one hand he's sort of average to somewhat below, and look how long it took him to get there. How long do the Jets stick with Smith? How much more bad play do we see in the meantime? Last off season his defenders ignored the poor opponents over the last four games and insisted he was on an upward trajectory. He was talked up all pre-season by the organization. He supposedly beat out Vick, and all other assorted nonsense that was being hyped. then he shows up in the regular season, and when the record still mattered he flat out sucked. How likely is it in his third year he will be materially better? Rather unlikely I would think.
You have to consider who Sanchez had around him last year also. Sanchez had a competent o-line, two excellent playmakers in Maclin and McCoy, and one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL in Chip Kelly. The luxury of an adequate coaching staff was definitely the most important factor.
A good player can overcome bad coaching. I thought that Mark had adequate coaching with the Jets and his failures were his own. His fans blamed everything on everyone but Mark. It was excuses from start to finish. But Mark played in a more complicated offense with Philly and overall was ok not terrible but not great. And Chip liked him enough to re-sign him for a mid-type deal.
im not disagreeing... my point was more that the argument "geno is as bad as it gets, mariotta has to be better by default" isnt necessarily true
i thought sanchez was pretty awful in philly. i mean he pretty much drove their playoff hopes into the ground and was the same turnover machine making the same awful decisions. and that was in a system with WR running wide open like crazy
It's not true. Geno could improve and was better his last 5 games when he was a competent Qb. But he did the same thing in 2013 and then regressed. Overall imo at this exact moment Mariota is better than Geno.
I thought he played better than that. It's not easy for me to admit because I've never been a Sanchez fan and my happiest day as a Jets fan was the day he was cut.
you could have said the same about Geno right before he was drafted with him and mark. mark could have improved. he was better for stretches before regressing again. i dont see why mariotta has to automatically be better. it coudl be the same situation again
Because Mariota is a much better prospect than Geno was. And hard to believe if Mariota starts from day 1 he won't do better than Geno did last year. But odds are with Fitz injured Geno could get another chance to be the starter.
I'm still hoping there's a way we can pry Glennon from the Bucs after they draft Winston. They'd have no need for him and I think we would be just stealing a guy with tons of potential and 2 years experience.
If MM is drafted by the Jets and starts from day 1 then they are setting him up to fall just like Sanchez and Smith. I know that's not a scenario you are supporting (at least I haven't seen that) but the idea of it makes me angry just like the folks that say "sitting a QB is antiquated and you start QBs immediately now" as if Wilson and Luck made a tried and true method irrelevant.
I just can't see the new FO starting their first season with GeNO as the starting QB. It would be too much of a gamble and would be the worse way to start off. If he does start it would be with a short leash and because there was little to no other option left. We just have to do BETTER than Fitzpatrick as the only other option. I still see a trade before or during the draft.
I will say one thing about the our Jets. When they draft a QB they give him EVERY opportunity! Seems like we are attached to Geno this year whether we like it or not.
Yes. I think he started out after the first appearance, which was pretty rough, but did well a few games after that. But imo Philly's season came down to the biggest game being when they hosted Dallas with 3 games left after having lost a tough game to Seattle. The Dallas game was Sanchez's worst of the season, which was a bit hard to understand since he played well in the earlier win in Dallas. Maybe not so hard since the Dallas D was seeing him for the second time. What was interesting in that game was Philly was behind in the third quarter, but the D forced a fumble from Romo on the Dallas 14, which (no real thanks to Sanchez) they converted for a go ahead TD after three running plays. So Dallas answered with Romo going 3 of 3 for 55 yards, add in a nice run by Murray for 21, and Murray capped it off with a rushing Td, so Dallas was back up by 4. Here's where Sanchez could either shine or crap the bed. He did the latter. On third and seven from their 24, Sanchez throws an interception to end the third quarter. Dallas converts a TD and is now up 11. Sanchez loses 11 on a sack on their next play from scrimmage. Sure then gets a big pass play off, but the Eagles only convert an FG to end the drive. Dallas gets the ball back and goes back up 11, which concededly is a tough uphill road for Sanchez. Still he threw a second interception at the two minute warning. That was pretty much the Eagles season, and Sanchez finished their most important game with a QBR of 18.4.
