Russell Wilson is not a "game manager"... he's dynamite and is arguably the best playmaking (with his legs) QB in the league today. He has a cannon of an arm, and throws an incredibly accurate deep ball. You're not going to win a SB in 2015 with a Trent Diller or Brad Johnson... and for all the flak Eli manning receives, he's still a good Quarterback and the same applies to Flaco.
All I'm going to say is Geno has to show considerable improvement..... It's put up or shut up for him....
While I'm thrilled with what the front office has accomplished so far, the true test will be how they handle the qb situation. If the "competition" mantra isn't just lip service...we could see Simms under center. Wouldn't that be strange.
If you put Wilson into offenses that most other NFL teams run, he wouldn't look very good at this point. Teams have to stack the box to defend the run, opening things up for him. He's a perfect fit for their offense in that he's an efficient QB running a very simplified offense.
Wilson is supposed to be getting a mega-deal with Seattle. Look he's good: very good. And probably qualifies as a franchise Qb. He's similar in style to RG3 but more resilient and a better leader. One guy's career is going up and the other guy is down. But in terms of sheer talent probably RG3 is the more talented Qb.
Yes, he would... Although Seattle's offense is predicated on the "zone read", they're offense also contains packaged plays and teams such as the Packers have this as well. Russell Wilson has shown the accuracy needed to succeed in any NFL offense, with his abillity to complete "bucket throws" on 7 routes and square ins or digs, by his ability to extend plays with his legs and throws with proper mechanics on the run, and with his outstanding footwork, which is absoultely necessary to succeed in a WCO. At Wisconsin, Wilson primarily worked on under center, and was required to make reads from the pocket. And although he was unfortunately overlooked by talent evaluators because of his size, he displayed all the traits needed to succeed in the NFL and function in a West Coast Offense. If you ever have the time, study Russell Wilson's footwork, mechanics, and playstyle in general.
Of course our only chance is a miraculous run but Geno is a turnover machine and Fitzy is a JAG. So when faced with the choice of taking one of the top QB prospects in recent memory (he is NOT Andrew Luck--we all get that) or finding a game managing JAG, I can't understand folks aspiring to find that JAG in the hopes we can have that one miraculous season. The poster to whom I was responding to has a plan that involves building around a below average QB. It's just crazy. But hey, Trent Dilfer did it. _
Russell Wilson has shown that he can throw with anticipation, touch, and accuracy consistently at the NFL level. RG3's footwork, decision making, and football IQ and field vision are not even close to Wilson's.
I think you can win with a game manager who isn't a turnover machine. I don't like committing your organization to one guy and it's a make or break situation. I'd rather trade for a Qb like Rivers, someone who knows how to play the position. I don't mind paying the salary if the price isn't exorbitant. Maybe a switch of first rounders and a 3rd. But if Fitz starts and we draft Mariota I'm ok with that. Just don't immediately put him in to start games like we did with Mark and with Geno.
People weren't saying that after RG's rookie year when he was elite. They thought that along with Luck he was going to be a superstar. But because of injuries and on and off the field problems of his making he regressed. Right now you'd have to take Wilson.
I can agree with some of that, but not all of it. Wilson can make some of the throws with a fair degree of consistency. He has a very good deep ball against 1 on 1 coverage. He poses lots of problems to defenses with his running ability in either the zone read or breaking containment and extending plays. That said, he isn't that accurate if asked to simply stand in the pocket and deliver the ball. Don't get me wrong, I like Wilson and the style of play that they use in Seattle. I think more teams should adopt a similar style of offense. That said, I think there are many QBs who could be successful in that offense that would have trouble in other offenses. In short, you don't need a prototypical "Elite NFL QB" to do what Wilson is doing in Seattle.
Yep. RG3 ran a similar offense his rookie year. Strong running game, and simple reads with the threat of the Zone Read and trying to contain RG3. In his 2nd and 3rd year, they've tried to make him more of a pocket QB running a "traditional NFL offense" and he has had trouble with it.
I'm sorry this is simply false... Wilson has shown the ability to be accurate in the pocket since his Wisconsin days. Wilson's tape on NFL game rewind, does not lie.
Rg3 was great for a ten game stretch, that's a very small sample size . Wilson has been great over the course of 48+ starts..
Spend some time on a few of the Seattle forums. There's many who question his accuracy, timing and reads.
nobody saying that Russ Wilson is bad or anything, he's just not elite. he's not shredding defenses week in and out.. in fact he does the opposite. check his game log, his stats are low. He lets his defense and his run game do the heavy duty, he'll make something happen if needed. that's a GAME MANAGER, to say wilson is anymore than that is ridiculous.
That's the beauty of NFL game Rewind, I have access to games of nearly all 32 teams, with the end zone or all 22 camera. It's nearly impossible to evaluate reads via the broadcast camera, because the camera tracks the ball and WRS often disappear from the screen. I've seen folks on the Packers fan fourm question Rodgers, I've seen Broncos fan call Manning terrible, and I've seen Pats fans do the same with Brady. I perfer to watch the games myself and formulate my own opinions.
So, Russell is a game manager because his stats are low? Now, that's RIDICULOUS. The term game manager is bogus and I have no idea who contrived that foolish term. All Great Quarterbacks manage games,, all great Quarterbacks manage their team, offense, and the pace of the game in general. To call Wilson a game manager, just shows that most fans and are obessed with the prototypical Quarterback. Calling Russell a game manager is just lazy analysis. I guess every Quarterback that is not a Brady, Rodgers, or Manning is a "game manager right"?
Those are QBs that shred defenses and win games for their teams almost single handedly. a Game manager plays the clock killer role and takes a very conservative approach to the game, never do more than needed. Game managers aren't throwing the ball 50 times trying to kill defenses, they play chess not checkers. if you want to take the extra technical approach to the topic you'll never understand.
As I said they're only three Quarterbacks in the NFL who do that on a consistent basis. According to your criteria, there are 29 game managers in the NFL.
