While i am not sure about Brees playing in the Meadowlands and cold weather, there certainly are indications the Saints are blowing it up.
I'm with you. to make that investment it has to be a slam dunk. i dont think it is... i think there are question marks. im not parting with high picks unless im certain
Why? Sean Payton doesn't need job security. He could name his job and get 5 years and a raise. If I am Sean Payton, I'm already thinking about where I want to coach next year and where I have the best chance to win my next Superbowl. I'm not sticking around for any rebuild with a team that has an unstable ownership situation.
If you say so. I think there is a difference between saying his arm was fine enough to play and saying it didn't affect him at all. I clearly remember watching him float passes with less zip on them during that final late-game stretch. To say the reason he (not the team?) failed was because he had no interest in being here seems like a reach. Everybody knows the Jets weren't his first choice. But he signed off the trade, and he looked like his normal happy and fired-up self and from the week 1 bomb to Cotchery in Miami to when he was throwing those 6 TDs against AZ. The team was 8-3 when he hurt his shoulder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brett_Favre#New_York_Jets_.282008.29 In September 2009, Favre again made Jets news, as the NFL learned that the Jets were aware that Favre injured his arm in the eleventh game of the 2008 season, and fined the Jets $125,000 for not reporting the injury in any of the Jets' five final games.[93] After he hurt his shoulder, the team lost 4 of 5. Draw your own conclusions. What you say makes sense as far as him being happy in Minnesota. But I don't think that means the team couldn't have won with him, had he come back and played for us in '09.
throwing away last year got us the #6 pick, which might get us mariotta throwing away a season got the colts andrew luck "never throw away a season" is kind of nonsesne, especially when you are a team that isnt very good at the moment. also, not getting brees is certainly not "throwing away a season". we have brought in other pieces, and have draft picks to bring in to build upon.
Isn't the fact that farve couldnt stay healthy a good reason to reconsider trading away the farm for a 36 year old QB?
Then give me Cooper or white.... another young player to build my future around and let me go after a QB the following season. I'm not in the business of trading (top 10) firsts for players over 35 years old... especially if you arent coming off a 12+ win season. Too many questions for that investment
All I'm saying is you have to look at every option, and if something becomes available that can vastly improve your chances to win now (like Drew Brees), you don't say..."No thanks, we're not going to be ready to win until 2017, so we don't want him." You'd be fired long before your big rebuild was even half over.
Yeah, I am not saying I want to trade for Brees. I was responding specifically to his response about Favre.
He didn't look any different in Dec than he did in Sept, he was still making bad decisions throwing the ball up for grabs. The man made his career playing through pain, he doesn't get the injury excuse when he played. He wants everyone to bow down to him for his toughness so he doesn't get the injury excuse.
Make a move to improve your chances to win now is one thing. Making a move to win now that costs you a ton of assets, and could cripple you if you dont win is another. I'm all for making win now moves if you are a 12 win team with decent odds to make the superbowl. When you are 4 win team that added some pieces that is like a 40-1 chance to win the superbowl, thats not a team you make a "win now" move for. especially year 1 of a new regime with so many unknowns. you know what is a REAL quick way to get fired? making an insanely high cost move gambling on a 36 year old and then NOT winning. imagine we get brees, go 11-5, lose in the first round, then watch mariotta destroy the NFL for 8 years on the saints. thats the flip side to your scenario.

if im drafting a player #6, im expecting to get more then 6 seasons out of him. and brees playing 2-3 years isnt enough, if we made that move and didnt make it to a superbowl it would be a failure imo
Sure, Favre would never use the injury as an excuse. But that doesn't mean it had no effect on him. The numbers don't support your argument, unless you are saying that in reality it didn't limit him physically at all, but that he used the injury as an excuse to dog it the rest of the way. Look at the completion %, yardage, TDs, INTs, from week 1 through the Tennessee game, and then after the Tennessee game: http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/gamelog/_/id/112/year/2008/brett-favre Admittedly, to say the injury affected him is also speculation on my part. But Mangini (or somebody else within Jets organization, I can't remember) actually alluded to it after the season, suggesting it was a factor. And the numbers back this up.
i think the bigger point is that he was an older guy and he got injured. to me, thats not a reason to go all in on an older player
Come on, you know it doesn't matter what the Jets were coming off from. This is the NFL. Teams can quickly improve (and decline) in one year. The 2014 Jets did not have Marshall, Revis, Cromartie, etc... Add Brees to that list and the 2014 team would have no resemblance to the 2015... NONE! For the record, I would be ecstatic if the Jets can get Mariota. I don't think he'll be there, so operating under that assumption leads me to believe this is by far the best plan for the next few years.
I am talking about how he looked. His arm was fine, he was still making dumb decisions. he had a few good games earlier to skew some #s.
