I look at our cap space dwindling and I smell a 'trade Mo" smell. I realize an extension probably only sends our cap up 6 or 7 mill. But I just have this feeling.
Perfectly rational thinking. What if we don't get Mariota though? Fans may hate it, but I still think we see Geno in week 1. It is setting up for us to take a pass rusher at 6 (or trade down) and Fitz is insurance to avoid another 4 win season if Geno cannot show any competence at the position.
I'm not sure that means anything. Kelly is a guy who notoriously holds things close to vest. If he wanted to trade up for Mariota, this is probably what he would say.
With the right receivers and a strong running game he can continue that... oh and he was also top 5 in both yds/att and yds/comp. That's what I like about this move, he gets the ball down field. He only has this year left on his contract so he's a perfect placeholder for MM to sit for a year if he drops into the Jets laps and if not they extend him after training camp or mid-season after he proves he can do it again.
And where exactly do we find this magical QB that will win 13 games for the Jets next year? If there was a chance they could get that guy I trust they would. It's not about desperation for "7 wins" it's about understanding that there is not a capable QB on the roster as of yesterday so we needed to get somebody who can hold the fort down while the Jets try and find that guy.
Accurate assessment of Fitz. But we went 8-8 with Smith. We're asking him to NOT lose games, not necessarily win them. For the time being. That would be a huge upgrade considering the last several years in our QB play...watching them throw games away like it was beyond their ability to grasp the concept of not to do that. It's enough to be excited about.
I have to agree. Why would any team need Philly as a middle man to get Bradford? Why not just go to St. Louis directly?
33-55-1 as a starter. 123 TDs v. 101 INTs. 17:8 was an aberration last season and also not fully in context considering the 6 TD pass game aberration. Let's also not forget that he was BENCHED by a team on the fringe of playoff contention for a player with ZERO prior NFL starts. Did I also mention that the moribund Tennessee Titans cut him the year before?
if Geno dramatically improves from year 2 to year 3, that would be a good thing for us.. but short of a dramatic improvement, he shouldn't be the starter. and if he's not the starter, we need someone out there at least capable of running an offense. that's all Fitzpatrick is. a veteran presence capable of starting. we need that. hopefully we can land Mariota, and also have some optimism for the future as well..
i readed somewhere that fitz was one of the highest IQ qbs in the nfl ( real IQ not football IQ ) with that said he isnt a great qb and i dont think he will start for us and if he will its likely we sitting a rookie qb to start with.
Fitzpatrick loses games though, that's why he always gets benched/released/traded. That's what I don't think our fanbase understands, he is a 1:1 TD:INT ratio guy just like Mark and Geno. He is not a game manager, he is a risk-taker that makes disastrous decisions that cost his team in close games. On occasion, he can look great and throw up a 4 TD performance. But that is always offset by nightmare 2-3 game stretches that lose him his starting job. Like I said, as a backup, I am fine. I'm just going to be very disappointed after a great offseason if he is starting for us in week 1.
If he is starting for us that means he beat Geno and is our best option. He is not coming here to be the face of the franchise hopefully just a one year stop gap for a rookie to develop.
