The more I think about cap the more I dislike the Skrine signing. That was basically Mo extension money used for a proven middle of the road CB directly before we went out and broke the bank on an elite one.
Skrine was this FO's version of drafting Kyle Wilson to play slot, but with a far better chance of success. The contract is too much but he is a physical dback that can bully slot receivers and wreck them in short screen situations. Mo isn't getting signed this year unless the are going to push most of his money to later years, probably he will either get signed next offseason our franchised.
Perhaps, but the cap hit to cut him is high and without paying 9M or so or more you won't get a better LT. In fact I don't think there's a better LT on teh market right now anyway. Perhaps in the draft.
If I recall correctly Skrine averages 6M per year, actually 6.25. and Carpenter appears to average 5 per year. So if their cap value this year is equal to the average per year (it's probably not, but it's all we got right now) that's 11.25 Million. Sporttrack currently has the Jets with 22.7M left (that includes everyone but the aforementioned players and also includes the estimated draft rookie costs). So if the 11.25 is correct, and sporttrac is correct there is about 11.5M left in the tank with the players currently under contract + the two who are apparently signing.
They talked to Cro until early this morning and they are still talking to Gilchrist which would probably take all that's left leaving nothing to sign a QB if one becomes available. Also I guess they could make a back loaded contract if they want to extend Richardson.
Quick calculations about our current cap space. According to overthecap.com, we currently have 28.9M cap space without exact numbers of Carpenter, Skrine and Powell deals. Let me use averages: Carpenter: 5M Skrine: 6.25M Powell: 1M Total: 12.25M We have 6 picks now (minus our 5th and 6th, plus Bears' 7th round), so the draft pool takes around 5.5M. So: 12.25M + 5.5M = 17.75M Our current cap space: 28.9M - 17.75M = 11.15M Please correct me if I'm wrong or missed something, but if these are correct numbers I can't imagine how we can afford us to sign Cromartie, Gilchrist and Fitzpatrick.
Richardson isn't sure and won't be for a couple seasons. They are playing hardball with Cro because he wants to come back bad. They could actually find QB money for a guy like Fitz is they work it right I think
We sign Cro and I think Fitz. Gilchrist may not be in the cards. I just don't see Mac going into the season with Geno and Simms as the only QB options.
I agree that with Revis back in the fold, I'm not a huge fan of the Skrine signing. At the same time though, if we missed out on Revis, we'd all be crucifying Mac for not getting an insurance CB earlier in the day and leaving ourselves with nothing. 6.5M is a hell of a lot to pay a nickel guy, though. Do we know his numbers/dead money that would result in releasing him down the road?
The Jets have been giving up the middle of the field for years against teams like New England, 6.5m may sound like a lot initially but when this guy smacks the shit out of Edelman twice this year you may want to revisit how valuable a slot dback is in this day and age
I would let Mo play out his contract, then franchise him, then see if I want to resign him. No reason to give him a ton of money now if you don't have to.
