I was just thinking stats can't really give an accurate read on an OG's pass protection performance when Russell Wilson is the QB.

Wilson is able to escape pressure and avoid taking sacks better than any other QB in the league.

So for argument's sake, say Carpenter gave up 4 sacks in Seattle last year (no idea how many he actually allowed), I think it's safe to say with Geno back there, you could at least double that number to 8 as a projection for '15.

Carpenter's problem even dating back to entering the league has been his conditioning and weight, where after a failure stint year 1 as Seattle's RT, he got moved to guard and was alright. This past season he cut down somewhere between 25 or so lbs from an article I read leading up to this season, might have been motivation given Carpenter's option wasn't picked up by Seattle.

It really depends on the cost at the end of the day. He's not terrible or penalty prone, especially not like Willie Colon who embarassed himself with false starts last year.

I don't like the signing. There is a reason the Seahawks didn't pick up his 5th year option.

    Just saying.

Bringing in Carpenter as a depth/competition signing would be fine depending on the terms.

While I would like us to aim a bit higher I am fine with the signing if it doesn't take up much cap space and leaves us room to bring in another decent OL in free agency.

The guys we have at guard now are just not ready for prime time.

Hurt and out of shape which is why Seattle didn't pick up his 5th year option. I guess this is what happens when you can't close the deal with your first choice. At least they signed somebody to something.

James Carpenter starting for us would be a very big disappointment; the comparisons with with Colon are somewhat accurate. I would be ok with him as cheap depth-signing, but even there I would prefer someone else ((late) draftpick or another FA etc.). I don't even think he is that much better than some of the guys we already have (Aboushi and even Dozier are rated higher in my books), which obviously says lot...

I love how all these experts on this board don't like this signing. Like they have studied all the guard play in the league.

He's fine if he's your 5th best OL. Problem is right now he might be 3rd. Still, can't fully judge it until you see what the terms are. If this exact move was late in free agency it'd be looked at entirely different.

What's up with us always getting Seattle castoffs? Is that the only fuckin team we deal with in the entire damn league? Wtf...any offensive lineman is subject to scrutiny. Last I checked Russell Wilson continuously runs for his life back there and makes things happen on his own and marshawn lynch gets hit often times immediately but is able to use his power for more yards. He rarely has gaping holes to run through like for example Demario Murray had last year
