If NE doesn't franchise McCourty I would be surprised but now I am reading they may not. If that is the case he would be the perfect compliment to Pryor, finally a true FS. He would probably be expensive but could be huge on our D

Pats put the Franchise Tag on their kicker. McCourty is available.

I hope Mac goes after McCourty. This team needs a true ball hawk...

Please bring in Devin McCourty. He deserves to be the top paid safety and he's entering his prime. It would allow Pryor to develop as an in the box safety. Get it done Mac!

Wow. I was not expecting this. Clay was at the top of my list of FA TEs.

I wonder if Clay would talk to us. There is a connection maybe with Kacey Rodgers. I guess we'd have to at least top 7.1 M per to get him though...

Maybe we can get creative and offer him a longer-term deal with more guaranteed money but spread out.

wow, i wasn't expecting that either.
i really wanted Clay too, but not north of 7.1M per. think we'll have to look elsewhere.

How about Cortland Finnegan on the cheap?

I think he's been washed up for years. He was awful in St. Louis. Miami took a shot on him and he was bad for them, too.

I've been high on Clay for a couple of years now, and with him being a free agent, I was hoping we could bring him aboard. Unfortunately, I feel $7.1 million is too much - given the other areas we need to address. Maybe Mac looks into Virgil Green who in some ways is similar to Clay, but he just hasn't been given the opportunity to showcase his abilities.

Interesting... I haven't heard about his receiving skills, but I have heard Virgil Green is a beast in the run game as a stud blocking TE (which is something we could definitely use as well).

Jordan Cameron seems to me to be the guy to focus on now if Miami has basically priced him out of the picture.

I would still explore signing Clay to an offer sheet. Macc can get creative here. If Miami is forced to match, that strains their cap even further. If they don't, we get a stud TE.

Did not want to start another thread on free agency so I thought to put down some crazy thoughts as to what I think could happen to us this year, but mostly as a reminder to me to temper our expectations. Very active in free agency doesn't not mean to me sweeping major deals ala Redskins or Raiders.

The Jets road to free agency will take IMHO many twists and encounter many surprises, some positive and some perhaps not. In general terms I have confidence in our front office and short of some major meddling from our owner they will go after free agency with vigor and focus. That of course does not mean we can get exactly who we want, but at least we will act swiftly and aggressively. Here is what I think is a reasonable expectation:

1- Forget the notion that we will go after multiple block buster deals for the few premier free agents. At best the Jets might make one or may be two major acquisitions on someone like Maxwell, McCourty, or less likely a QB or OL. I really don't see Revis as an option.

2- The term very active in free agency means to me the will lift every rock and aggressively pursue second tier free agents that can immediately improve this team, and with the exception of maybe Cro, young enough to stick around with some upper potential. Here I see the aperture quite large, capturing a QB, another CB, an OL, maybe even and ILB and or OLB, and I'm not discounting a complimentary WR, TE or RB. This to me is the most intriguing area and many good names have been provided on this site. If we knew what Gailey wants his offense to be we could for sure pick a few key candidates here. Imagine his offense with a new swift RB and QB under center.

3- I really see them using free agency to enhance their flexibility to choose BPA with the 6 pick, be it a stud WR, OLB or QB if still there at six.

4- Although perhaps not a popular topic, I would not discount the notion that a trade is in the works....Coples, Snack, may be even Mo which would hurt me deeply.

When it's all well and done, my gut tells me the Jets could have as many as 3-4 new starters on 0ffense, including a QB, and as many as 4-5 on D depending on the package. Exciting times ahead.

These are defintely valid points. But I don't see them trading away Coples or the Sons. What would they get in return? The Line as a group is pretty good and a new GM would not want to tore apart the one part of our game that is definitely set for years to come. Extend Mo and enjoy one of the best lines in the NFL, that's what they will and have to do. Pay Mo asap. He is the best player on the team and still very young.

Good feed back. No argument from me, especially about Mo, but I have a nagging feeling about Coples, a terrific player being squeezed in the wrong position. Hope I'm wrong.

It depends on what we would get in return. If it is worth giving away Coples, why not? As you said, we might not have the perfect position for him available.

Pierre Thomas was released by the Saints.

Easily one of the better pass down backs in the league. Very underrated.

    I'm a fan of Thomas.
long in the tooth, but would come cheap. possibly an after the draft move if we don't come away with an answer there, or if we lose Powell.

818 career carries - not too bad, he's def got some left in the tank. If we lose Powell, then we should def look to sign Thomas who would be great on 3rd down and passing downs.

Definitely would take a flyer on him. Never hurts to have the extra receiver in the backfield. Could easily see him having around 350 rushing yards and about 400 receiving yards.
