Woody Johnson: Reserving cash for the future not part of Jets’ makeup Posted by Josh Alper on January 29, 2015, 8:45 AM EST Getty Images When Jets Owner Woody Johnson was asked last season about then-General Manager John Idzik’s decision to hold onto some $20 million in cap space, he defended Idzik by saying that he approved of Idzik’s approach without mandating it. Johnson also mentioned that he believes you should always have cash in reserve by never spending your last dollar. A few months can make a big difference. Whether because of the team’s results or a change in personal economic theory, Johnson has changed course. During an interview with ESPN Radio in New York on Wednesday, Johnson reiterated that he didn’t direct Idzik to sit on his money and said that he now does not believe in the reserve approach he previously espoused. I’m not going to say to him, ‘Save it.’ That’s ridiculous. We’re in this to win it,” Johnson said. “We’re in the win business. Reserving firepower in terms of cash for some future date is not part of the makeup of the New York Jets. We will spend what we are allowed to spend, to try to make us as competitive as we can be.” New General Manager Mike Maccagnan has already said he plans to be “very active” in free agency this offseason and it seems that he’ll have no problem convincing Johnson to return to the freer spending ways of the years before Idzik implemented his more austere approach to running the team. That might turn out to be good news for cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who was purged last year for cap reasons but hits free agency off a rebound in Arizona with thoughts of a Jets reunion on his mind.
Does Woody intentionally throw people under the bus. And saying one thing and 2 months later something else. Or is he just confused.
So what's his next step if things don't go right. Fire Mac and Bowles if the media hates them after one season.
I just want to know what they would have spent their 20 mil on. Cutting Cormartie saved 9 mil. So where was the other 11 mil going? I didn't see any quarterbacks out there other than Vick unless we kept Sanchez(8 mil savings). Why even sign Colon back was there anything better? Another Guard? He fucked up reciever. OLB he could have tried better. But the resources of free agency sucked.
Not letting Shwartz OG and DRC CB leave the building and go to the Giants would have been a good start. Perhaps bringing in Emanuel Sanders would have been a good idea as well.
Revis - Woody even admitted in his presser that he couldn't work with his agents. And if he could have gotten him for the same 12 mil the Patriots got him for might have been interested. Vontae Davis was the guy they went after. And were willing to pay top corner money. According to reports they made him an offer and thought they had him signed. And the Colts counter offered and Davis chose them (his team) over them. With DRC he chose the Giants over the Jets. I guess some players weren't jumping for joy to play for Rex.
Yeah but it on Rex. Dumb ass Idzik only offered DRC a one year deal and less money. Plus he never offered Cro shit and or even talked to Revis's people.
Look Bowles had plenty of injuries with the AZ defense and did pretty well. Rex not having one vet corner and only one significant injury on defense (a cornerback) went 4-12. It wasn't because of not having DRC. Plus we don't know what the Jets offer was to him. He chose the Giants over Rex partially because of his relationship with Rolle who he considers to be his mentor.
And this is the single biggest reason why the Jets are absolutely screwed going forward. This is the Knicks all over again, an owner who inherited all his money from his father, is kinda clueless, and spineless enough to let toxic media and impatient fans dictate his actions. He was alright with rebuilding when Idzik came in because he either did not understand what that entails, or did not expect the media/fan frenzy. But once reality hit, he put his tail between his legs, went back on everything he said before and threw other people under the bus. Not just stupid, but really shady. It has been shown time and time again in the NFL that teams that spend a lot in free agency pretty much always have bad results to show for it. But now, would it surprise anyone if Maccagnan goes all Tanenbaum in free agency? You can't even blame him, he would just be trying to save his job and avoid what happened to Idzik. Yeah, we all can push the Superbowl celebration back another 30 years or so...
Just looked it up and Arizona ranked 24th overall in D and Jets 6th. I'm sorry but 24th is not pretty good.
Except we literally have to spend to avoid the <89% over 4 years penalty. I don't like Woody's quote, but we have to spend either way. I would first re-sign Mo Wilk rather than get premier free agents, but spending is nonetheless required.
Look closer. 3rd in red zone defense, top 5 in scoring defense, lots of injuries too. Cardinals D was better than Jets D last year IMo
Arizona 5th in NFL for points allowed vs Rex at 24th in NFL. And don't forget wins and losses. I'll take that over Rex's bullshit D stats.
It's not a choice between spending or not spending, all teams spend, it's a choice between spending the money intelligently (as good teams do, waiting for the right player or doing cap friendly deals) or just going all out and overspending on wrong players as Tanenbaum often did, because if you don't, you'll be run out of town.
People are still spouting the total defense bullshit? If you thought the Jets defense was better than the Cardinals defense last year, you know nothing about football. No offense.
