And to all those pining for Spiller, Gailey can do the same thing for Harvin that he did for Spiller.
I agree u aren't getting a player like harvin I'm the 4th round but he can't stay on the field that's my biggest problem with him
I'm not sure if I agree that Harvin is worth a 4th round pick. Yes, he's a homerun threat and play maker, something the Jets don't have enough of on the team, but not having a true position hurts him. He's not really a RB and not really a WR. He's a STs player (PR & KOR) and gimmick player. He's a luxury. CJ Spiller offers the same homerun threat, but he has a position, knows the offense, and would cost only a fraction of what Harvin would, and wouldn't cost the 4th round pick. In addition, there could be a RB or WR the Jets like that would offer the same potential that could fall to the 4th round and who doesn't have Harvin's injury history or potential for causing trouble. There were a couple of players like that in last year's draft that a number of us wanted the Jets to take, but they didn't. Instead they took Jalen Saunders.
I disagree. IMO Harvin has no position. He's primarily a PR & KOR. He's neither a RB nor WR. I'm no cap expert, but I'm not sure if your first point is accurate. I know often times if a veteran is on the roster for the first game of the season, the team is on the hook for his full contract. Why wouldn't that apply to Harvin? He isn't better than CJ Spiller imo. With Spiller in the backfield, opposing Ds wouldn't know whether he was going to run the ball, catch a pass or be a decoy. With Harvin in the backfield, they'd know it was going to be a pass or perhaps an end around. You also don't know that he's better than anyone we could take in the 4th round. The very fact that he's injury prone and could possibly not be available for a long stretch of games lowers his value. Every year players taken in the 4th round or lower surprise everyone and become very good, if not great players and starters. As for point #4, so what? If the Jets draft Cooper at the #6 pick, he would be with the team a long time and would be a true #1 WR. The Jets aren't all in for the 2015 season. In all likelihood they aren't going deep in the playoffs if they even make the playoffs at all. To think they will is extremely optimistic, so even if the WR the Jets draft takes a half a season or a full season to develop, it doesn't really matter. Harvin is not the future. The player they draft to replace him could be.
When we took Vernon Gholsten with the sixth overall pick we expected him to be with the team a long time and be a # 1 pass rusher. My point is that if Harvin has the potential to develop into a #1 WR by the end of this season it might make some sense to give our new coaches a chance with him before we cut bait. If he plays great we have a keeper otherwise we are out a few bucks and a fourth round pick. If he plays half as well as we would like we might even get something good for him in a trade.
Not saying we should do this, and it may be out of our hands depending on what Denver and GB decide to do. But in theory I would think we at least have the cap room for it. Imagine this receiving corps. Demaryius Decker Cobb / Percy In 2 years, you have gone from the worst WR corps in the NFL to one of the best. Throw CJ Spiller and Jordan Cameron (whose asking price has likely plummeted due to injury, QB play in Cleveland last year and frankly just a bad year) into the mix and all of a sudden you've got playmakers all over the place.
Uuuggghhh last year was the first time I've ever played Fantasy Football and Cameron got me a bunch of zeroes before I cut his ass. _
I want McCourty at safety.. This could be one of the more important positions we need help with.. Landry most likely follows Rex to Buffalo, and I can't fathom Calvin Pryor running shit back there with Rontez Miles or whoever else is left at safety on this roster.. Gotta get that back end solidified asap!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Perhaps, but I think it will be a lot tougher since Harvin doesn't have a true position. Spiller does.
Harvin has the flexibility to play all over the offense, which makes him very dynamic and valuable in a system like Gailey's. Position or not, his role would be similar, and equally as effective. Of course this is all null and void if he can't stay on the field because of injuries, but then again, the same goes for Spiller.
I agree with everything you say regarding Harvin, esp the notion in bold. Just leave Brick out of your argument and and I'd nominate yours as top post in the thread.
Does he really?? If you're an opposing DC and Harvin comes into the game and when the huddle breaks he lines up in the backfield. Do you really think he's gonna run up the gut or off tackle? I wouldn't. He's not able to play any one position consistently - he either can't or won't play RB and can't run all the routes at WR. He's a gadget player. There are a limited number of plays he could run. He's way too expensive for a gadget player or role player, flexible or not. There's no way I'd pay a player that doesn't have a position that kind of coin. If I'm Big Mac, Harvin's history unless he demonstrates he can line up at WR and run every route in the route tree well.
The 'gadget' factor in Harvin's game or not doesn't take away from the fact that he's a dynamic player when he's on the field. Go look back at some film of Harvin with Minnesota. He returned kicks but he played generally as a true wide receiver most of the time especially with Favre. You're really basing all of this Harvin can't play wide receiver crap on a short stint in Seattle in an offense filled with with gimmicks and I'd imagine you're basing the majority of this on the Seattle/ Green Bay national TV game to start the season. Harvin's play making ability from all over the field provides offenses with a multidimensional aspect that's really underestimated by a lot of fans especially with someone like Gailey who loves screens and getting playmaker in open space.
74 Receptions / 5 TD's / 962 Yards / 13.0 Average / 15 games played 87 Receptions / 6 TD's / 967 Yards / 11.1 Average / 16 games played. One of those stat lines is Eric Decker's season last year with Geno and Vick. One of those stat lines is Percy Harvin's best season at WR with Brett Favre throwing him the football. Can you guess which is which? (The 1st is Decker's / 2nd is Harvin's.) So we should keep a guy who had a Hall of Fame QB throwing him the ball at 10 million dollars per season, when a guy that we already have is only making 7 million per season posted nearly identical stats in a year where he had 2 of the statistically worst QB's in the league throwing him the ball, because over the course of his career he has rushed for 150 yards per season. Fucking stupid. Percy Harvin is a 5 million dollar per season player, and that's being generous. He was a one hit wonder. Period. He is the kind of guy that shitty teams get stuck with and keep paying even though there are far better replacements out there, just because he has name value. Cobb, Maclin, Crabtree, and Maclin are all far more reliable and ALL of them will be cheaper then 10 million per season. Hell tack on 3 or 4 million dollars are you are in Dez Bryant / Demarius Thomas territory.
