1. Lock up Mo for 5-6 years 2. Build smartly, but not cheaply via free agency. Don't mind breaking the bank for maybe one guy like Justin Houston, but the rest should be legitimate players that provide notable upgrades on what's already on this roster (example: Don't need a Brandon Carr-like contract, but no Dimitri Pattersons either; maybe someone like Cro - quality and value) 3. Structure contracts for a cap-friendly future to avoid a situation like New Orleans or Miami has. To be honest, Idzik did a good job of this, but not the talent part.
I'd prefer putting our big money into the OL. Houston had a monster season, which will make his contract demands super high.
You'd like not too, but we have a lot of holes to fill. Wilk is a good trade bait guy, we can get great value from him at a position of strength. Is Wilk a 10% of our cap type player on this team? I don't think so, he is a very good player, but more of a luxury than a necessity...on this team.
It's true. You're probably looking at a minimum of 13.5M per year. I wouldn't get too crazy there, but for about 13.5-14.0/year average, he might be worth it. The guy has been a force since he entered the league, improving in each. I think he'd be a monster under Bowles. The offensive line needs help for sure, but it's far from a disaster or a total mess. Brick and Breno form about an average OT duo while Mangold is the best in the business. Aboushi really wasn't bad in his first year as a starter and the line improved a lot with him in the lineup instead of Winters. I do think that a very high quality free agent guard is a must. Iupati is the common name, but I think Orlando Franklin is just as good a player and offers more in pass protection while costing less than Iupati. Plug him in at LG and slide Aboushi to RG and I think that's a solid line. I also want to see at least a potential heir at OT added via the draft, perhaps as high as the first round, but doesn't have to be that high. Brick isn't that terrible and perhaps he can have a bounce-back season, like Mangold did this year. Should prep for the future at that position via draft anyway though. PFF ranked this line as the 11th best in the league, I believe. So the line needs a little help, but I don't see where putting big money into the line is possible. And don't forget, Mangold and Brick are two of the highest paid players on the team, Breno was just signed and a free agent OG seems likely - that's already a lot of money
Our chances of getting Revis back walked out of the door with Rex Ryan. More likely he stays with Pats or goes to the Bills. Woody really is an idiot getting tampering charges for the guy he repeatedly offends. Cro is the much more likely guy to resign here, not the player Revis is but will come a whole lot cheaper. I think you've undervalued Mo. He's not potential trade bait, he's a key part of our rebuild back to a playoff football team and him, Sheldon and to a lesser degree Snacks needs to be paid accordingly.
He's an absurd talent, I just don't think they can swing that at this point for the defense. That DL is going to cost them quite a bit over the next several years, and they should keep them together, as it is obviously the biggest strength on this team. Spending the money on some solid OL pieces like Iupati or Franklin obviously helps in a variety of ways. Breno won't be around past next season, and Brick needs to restructure (talked about this earlier, it might happen and it might not...the OT FA class is meh). With the lack of QB talent in the market, the OL is going to have to raise the level of play in order for the QB position to not become a negative again next season. We all know what happens from there, if the QB sucks, shit will roll downhill. Love Houston, but I feel the money is better suited in the trenches.
Man, that sounds an awful lot like when Revis was shown the door. We all know where that got the team. Having a dominate force isn't having a "luxury". Building a team is obviously the priority, but you can't sacrifice your strength to build on an unknown commodity (ie. letting Wilk walk, and bringing in others that are question marks. ie. Revis being traded and his position filled with Milliner and others).
1. Try to lock up Wilkerson before free agency starts. If he is not willing to sign a reasonable contract talk to Suh, Farley, etc. to see if he can be replaced and traded. If don't find a replacement in free agency or the draft I could live with overpaying him (within reason) before the season starts. 2. Bring back our free agents work keeping (Snacks, Ellis, Landry, Harris, etc), If we can lock them up for 2-3+ years on reasonable terms, great otherwise do not waste too much cap room. 3. Get the best pass rusher we can find in free agency. Do not worry about the cost unless we can get someone almost as good for a lot less. Even then we should consider signing both guys. 4. Bring back Cro or sign another reasonably priced starter at CB 5. Keep Harvin (paycut or not) unless we can get Dez Bryant / Demarius Thomas, etc. Sign a bargain priced WR, Torrey Smith would be nice. 6. Sign two good TEs in free agency. 7 Bring in a game manager at QB, maybe Ryan Mallett. 8. Depending on the cap space left over we could talk to the Bears about taking Jay Cutler if they are willing to cough up draft picks.
Fixed, Torry Holt in his prime would not come cheap. I want to build OL through the draft even if it takes some time. If we draft a left tackle in round one Brick could fill in at left guard. Also we are stuck with our RT for another year since stupid Idzick guaranteed half of his salary. Besides TEs are dirt cheap, even good ones make almost nothing.
I happen to like Amaro, and think he will become a good player. Adding another TE wouldn't be awful to replace Cumberland. No way the team goes after a Thomas or Cameron (both will get solid deals). Best bet would be on a guy like Niles Paul.
-Restructure Harvin -extend Wilkerson -sign Byron Maxwell -sign vet QB to compete with Geno -draft oline with 1st round pick
Extend Wilk Restructure Harvin Sign Iupati Draft OLine and QB, or use Mallett (?) as a 1 year stop-gap Blow the rest on stripper and hookers.
Good name, I like Maxwell. Good size for a CB, and he's pretty young. Hopefully Williams continues to progress and Milliner/McDougal can actually pan out.
What's your alternative? Play Geno with Simms behind him? That's your entire QB roster right now, and the FA class is weak at QB. So you're good with : Geno, Simms, Rookie? Interesting.
He's not great but he's an above average CB. If Milliner stays healthy they could be a nice tandem. Hopefully Williams continues to progress, McDougal comes back healthy and plus Walls is a solid depth player. That wasn't a competition they were just talking out of their asses. Vick was brought in as insurance in case Smith imploded (which he did 3 int game vs Bills) this time they must have an actual competition Geno vs whichever veteran (Hoyer, Hill, McCoy etc)
