Damn...you beat me to it! :) Exactly where I was going. Pick him up in the 3rd/4th round. (I don't think he lasts all the way to the 5th if he declares)

You know, some of you either didn't know or choose to forget that it wasn't all that long ago that MOST QB's rode the pine for anywhere from 2 - 4/5 years before seeing the starting lineup. There are always exceptions but that was...and should still be the rule. Draft a guy like Jones, sit him for a minimum of 2 years, pick up a F/A guy to compete with Geno & Simms and start there. Who that F/A is...well, that's debatable. There are ONLY 2 things we absolutely must have in a QB to accommodate Gailey's offense is accuracy and intelligence. The guy doesn't need a cannon...he doesn't need 4.2 speed...he needs to be able to read a defense, take what it gives you and accurately deliver the ball. Now, who, in the current crop, fit that bill...or, at the very least comes close?

Let's see what we have here:

Name Age Team Cap Hit Type of FA
Matt Moore QB 30 MIA TBD $5,500,000 UFA
Jake Locker QB 26 TEN TBD $4,004,637 UFA
Michael Vick QB 34 NYJ TBD $4,000,000 UFA
Kyle Orton QB 32 BUF TBD $4,000,000 UFA
Matt Hasselbeck QB 39 IND TBD $3,750,000 UFA
Christian Ponder QB 26 MIN TBD $3,232,313 UFA
Mark Sanchez QB 28 PHI TBD $2,250,000 UFA
Blaine Gabbert QB 25 SF TBD $2,011,587 UFA
Shaun Hill QB 35 STL TBD $1,750,000 UFA
Jason Campbell QB 33 CIN TBD $1,500,000 UFA
Brian Hoyer QB 29 CLE TBD $1,250,000 UFA
Tarvaris Jackson QB 31 SEA TBD $1,250,000 UFA
Matt Flynn QB 29 GB TBD $1,078,750 UFA
Ryan Mallett QB 26 HOU TBD $776,976 UFA
Tyrod Taylor QB 25 BAL TBD $671,327 UFA
T.J. Yates QB 27 ATL TBD $645,000 UFA
Scott Tolzien QB 27 GB TBD $645,000 UFA
Jimmy Clausen QB 27 CHI TBD $645,000 UFA
Joe Webb QB 28 CAR TBD $635,000 UFA
Luke McCown QB 33 NO TBD $635,000 UFA
Colt McCoy QB 28 WAS TBD $635,000 UFA
Dan Orlovsky QB 31 DET TBD $635,000 UFA
Kellen Moore QB 25 DET TBD $576,668 RFA
Austin Davis QB 25 STL TBD $570,000 RFA
Josh Johnson QB 28 SF TBD $335,294 UFA
Matt Simms QB 26 NYJ TBD $262,058 RFA
Ryan Lindley QB 25 ARI TBD $234,706 UFA
Jordan Palmer QB 30 TEN TBD $67,058 UFA
Case Keenum QB 26 HOU TBD $58,235 UFA
Tyler Thigpen QB 30 CLE TBD $33,529 UFA
Chester Stewart QB 25 BAL TBD - RFA
Kyle Newhall-Caballero QB 26 OAK TBD - RFA
G.J. Kinnie QB NYJ TBD - RFA
Tyler Hansen QB 25 CIN TBD - RFA

I've bolded/highlighted the players that generate some intrigue in me. And Matt Simms...com'mon...the guy is already on the team...we just have to have a REAL QB competition this year. But, I feel, that anyone of those guys could come in and supplant Geno, give us our stop gap for a few years and then backup Jones (or whoever we draft). I will say...I'm the biggest Rex Ryan backer around but the lack of a true QB competition each year really did get under my skin. What do you people think? Oh, and I am stretching when I include Tavaris Jackson in there to run an offense like Gailey's.

Cardale Jones is not going into the draft.

Watching tape on Petty, sign me up. But not for 2015. Pretty terrible year for FA QB's and a big no to Cutler.

    Start Simms I guess.....

Until he declares one way or another it's open for debate. To be honest he would be stupid not to. The Buckeyes are stacked ahead of this guy and Urban has never been one to let a guy lose his "gig" due to injury. Jones would be wasting a ton of talent and eligibility buried on the depth chart when he could be on an NFL Team, riding the pine and learning...and getting paid.

Now, if I was his parents...stay in school. But we all know how that all goes.

He's not declaring. He said "he's not ready for that level"

The guy has played three games lol

Ahhh...hadn't seen that...ok...so insert a different draft name...it really doesn't matter as the crux of the whole argument is really the F/A part. Winston (yuck), Mariotta (we wish) or some other drafted guy still should sit for a time and learn. :)

Here's why I think he might do well here and I emphasize MIGHT. The Jets have a pretty good defense, in fact it is a playoff caliber defense. The problem with the Jets over the past 4 years has been zero offense. In fact it's less than zero when you count all the giveaways. What the Jets need is an offense that puts up some points and allows the D unit to play with a lead once in a while (as in the Pittsburgh game). It's hard to win games no matter how good the defense is, when the offense is giving away points and going 3-and-out all day. Cutler, who has never played on a team with a stellar defense, can give the Jets the offensive spark they need to win a majority of their games provided the defense continues to play well.

Thank Goodness. I don't think the league could stand another Jamarcus Russell. The kid ain't ready for the NFL yet. He's got the size and the arm, but not the savvy or the experience yet.

The first thing I would do is get Mike Glennon in here. He played pretty well as a rookie and had 10 more TD passes than INT's. When was the last time a Jet QB did that? Why Lovie Smith chose to start McCown over him in 2014 is still a mystery to me. Tampa is going to draft Winston. Bring Glennon to the Jets and let's see if he can develop under Chan Gailey.

What a horrible QB FA list.

Any rookie wouldn't be holding a clipboard long with any of those starting. The fans would be chanting for the new guy by Week 4.

That's the thing, people throw around the JaMarcus stigma anytime there is a big black QB being discussed. I don't think it has any relevance to Winston-he looks like the anti-JaMarcus to me but with other issues- but with this guy it scares me.

We need to see him under a microscope for at least an entire college year to get a better read in him.

I'd be very scared of picking Mariota. I dont think he'll adapt to the NFL, I guess it all depends on how he's brought along though.

If we want to upgrade at QB this off season the only real options I see are the trade routes. This is not a strong QB draft class and the UFA's are really weak.

In the first 30 quarterbacks out there, there are plenty that run around like a fool QB's, but very few cool, pocket passers.
They're easy to spot, Peyton was #1 but Brady was the seventh, and the #1 that year was the only other. That was 2 out of 199 picks.

After the top 2 it's a weak class. The top two are studs.
