as an aside - I think they should stop putting former officials on TV. It's only going to cause bad publicity when they say something should happen that ends up being the opposite of what ends up happening. It's not like anyone is going to stop watching if we don't hear from Mike Pereira during a broadcast.

The result is the remaining tweets that make it look like he predicted the season. Face-guarding is only a penalty if the defensive player makes contact that impedes the catch. You could say it was because Hitchens does make contact with Pettigrews arm. However, Pettigrew also pushed off of Hitchens facemask right before. The ref is the one who made this a bigger deal by calling the penalty immediately even though other refs were congregating to discuss the call. Morelli himself acknowledged that he should have waited.
There was contact, and as a result, that play is textbook PI. As long as I've been watching football that play is always called PI. The defender has to turn around to play the ball. And I hear what you are saying about the ref jumping the gun on the call, but you can't pick up the flag. They went so far as to begin to spot the ball. That was really bad on the part of the ref.
That Witten hold is correct by the book, but then to be consistent the refs would have had to call holding on 90% of all the other plays to be consistent. The Witten call was inconsistent with how they called the rest of the game, so a bad call to me.
NFL just admitted that the referees made a mistake . It was pass interference . Detroit gets hosed !!!
Weak minded teams use shit like this as an excuse for failure. Was it a really bad job by the refs? Yes. Was it the end of the game? No. The Lions still had that game in their own hands, and blew it.
