Marrone asked for a 2 year extension for him and his staff. According to the article I read with no pay raise. The owner turned him down. So he opted out knowing there will be organizational changes.

It's obviously a balance between talent and coaching, probably tipping more towards talent than coaching to be honest in that an amazing roster with a terrible coach has a much better chance than a terrible team with an amazing coach. I just look at the list of Super Bowl winners (hell, even the losers) over the last 10 years and I don't think Rex beats any of them all other things considered equal.

If you give Rex and Payton or Belichick or Harbaugh or whoever the exact same roster and it comes down to the ability of the coach and you had to bet everything you owned on one of those coaches are you putting it on Rex? I sure as hell wouldn't be. I'd be worried he'd screw up a time out and cost me my house or now I'm taking the bus because he gave up first downs on every 3rd and long because everyone in the hemisphere knew he was going to blitz.

Rex did some great things, for sure, I don't think his tenure should be remembered as a horrible failure...but let's not act like he's heading the the Hall of Fame and that they should be building statues of him outside Metlife.

He did the smart thing, using his opt-out clause as leverage to get an extension. It's just good contract negotiation tactics; if you have such a preferable opt-out option (getting a free 4 million, essentially) you'd be stupid not to use that as leverage.

    Marrone...as a Head Coach...in college and the pros...is below a .500 record.

He's an offensive guy on an offense that was terrible. His offensive line in Buffalo was terrible and he's an o line coach.

Their defense is dominating. Marrone hired coordinators for defense like Rex hired them for offense...hands off.

    Why would anyone want him?

It was a smart move. a negative person would say TOO smart. Getting out while his stock is still high before the 3 year benchmark decision comes so he can be a highly sought candidate with another 3 year window.

not saying that's my opinion but with his short tenure in Buffalo it's something to think about

According to what I read he would have stayed. The opt out clause was put into the original contract in case there was a sale.

If that's the case, they're probably not performing and need to go anyway. However, I think that's Vets more like a Holmes than a Mangold. Guys who don't play hard every down, or are just hanging around for the payday.

He did a great job with that game.

But that was a long time ago. 4 straight years of not making the playoffs, no development from either of his QB's. It was time to make a move

Mike Smith had a lot more success in the regular season for whatever that's worth. He was also a defensive minded coach to who came from the same coaching tree as Rex,he actually worked under Rex Ryan as linebackers coach in Baltimore when Rex was DC I belive

That doesn't follow the narrative of Woody being an imbecile and screwing everything up.

He's been off for two weeks. Did he really need to come back from vacation on a Friday? Not to worry, just put up with him until five and we won't see him again until Monday. Great work, if you can get it.

sorry about that but I like to discuss reality. you can be an average fan and bash Mark and rex, I appreciate what they did.

I ask again how did we make 2 title games when:

    Our QB sucked
    GM sucked
    HC sucked
    OC sucked

doesn't this amaze anyone else? how did we do it?

Considering how well Woody has done so far, where is the evidence that he is this Great Owner that can do no wrong? He blew it with these following situations: WSS, Tebow, Revis, Herm, First GM and now, the 2nd. by rushing the search for a GM and not only that, considering doing a mix n match again with the HC in place before the GM. Woody isn't a imbecile, but he's no NFL Owner savant. If he was, he wouldn't have hired some executive search firm to find a GM the first time. He still doesn't have this "NFL Owner" thing down pat just yet even though he's 15 years into it.

There's something incestuous when your "trusted advisor" is pimping his people in what's supposed to be an honest search process. There's nothing about Marrone that screams "sign this guy today!". Not his record either in the Pros or College. Why would he need an "out clause" in the first place? The only thing Marrone got going for him is Casserly and that might be all he needs sad to say.

Not for nothing but it would be real easy to skew the process simply by recommending inferior candidates to make YOUR guys look more attractive. Makes a person wonder if Casserly is trying to become a kingmaker of sorts. Again, all you hear from is Casserly. Not a peep out of Wolf. Hmmmmm...

I hope this search process is more legitimate than the QB competition we just laughed our way thru last summer.
