you have to think he is on a promise somewhere otherwise its a very bizarre thing to just walk out of a HC position like that with nothing to move on to.
Not when your still getting paid to sit at home. He can not coach next year and still make the exact same money he would've coaching the bills. It was a smart move on his part.
I didn't know about the salary thing - that is ridiculous - why on earth any employer would agree to something like that is beyond me - still nice work (or lack thereof) if you can get it.
For petes sake this is what I've been TRYING to say!! Thank you Truth! NONE of these men are what one would call "exceptionally qualified." And BINGO on the bolded part. I mean hell...if we want mediocrity why don't we just promote Marty to HC, go replace an OC and just keep on rolling status freakin' quo. I mean...if Marrone is good enough for you then the scenario I just described should work even better for you. I mean...Marty has a hell of a lot better pedigree than Marrone does. Every time I see someone type the name Tom Cable I puke in my mouth. That guy shouldn't be allowed within ten feet of a HC position.
I don't think Marrone should be allowed to ever pick up a headset. He had the audacity to become a head coach in the first place. Buffalo doesn't like him, Mehta doesn't like him and we shouldn't like him. Let's put up another billboard.
Because the employer that put it in, knew that that he wouldn't be the one paying it. The clause kicked in because of a change in ownership. And it was public knowledge that the Bills were being sold -- so they probably needed to put something in for potential hires -- nobody like to go to an uncertain situation. Isn't that exactly the excuse BB used to bail on the Jets when Hess died not knowing who the owner would be.
Getting back to the original idea of this post. If they want Morrone they should act fast. He has interviews with other teams. Unless he already has a deal with someone and all this is is subterfuge he could just take his first offer. Say he interviews with the 49ers and they offer him the position at good money and years. You don't think he's going to take it. Meanwhile Woody's playing pocket pool and is out of the running. This is what I think is going to happen.
He's not a horrible option by any means. There are positives and negatives. One thing I laugh at is Rex lovers that point to his conservative decisions on 4th downs when Rex was 1000 times more conservative. Marrone also changed that mid way through the year.. He had some good ballsy decisions down the stretch in the GB game and the Cleveland game. One thing I like about him has been his ability to draw, and not being afraid to hire, good defensive coordinators (Pettine & Schwartz). He is well connected in the league. If the jets hire him I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. Hell Rex got it for YEARS
Did I say track record?? I don't think I said track record...as I scroll up I do not see track record... What I said was pedigree. Who he has coached...who he has been associated with...who he was trained by...what he's accomplished, overall, at the professional level...etc...etc...etc... My point being if we want mediocrity we could have just kept Rex or promoted Marty. I do not want mediocrity. I want positive forward moving progress. Period.
LOL!!!!! If the 49'ers hire Marrone I'm going on lock down...I live out here and there could be a full scale riot! To go from Jim Harbaugh to Doug Marrone...whew...the fit will hit the shan out here...if it's a backwards step for the Jets it's a QUANTUM LEAP backwards for the 49'ers. he he heeee
From your lips to Woody's ears...I've said in a number of posts...if we can get that one competent GM and then Woody goes on vacation or something and lets that GM do his job...I'd feel a helluva lot better...
It's not that bizarre. There were reports all year that he had major clashes/disagreement with the GM there. Including rumors they wouldn't speak to each other for most the season and Marrone being upset about the GM trying to dictate playing times/starters.. Also, the new owner there, Pegula, is a star struck child. He runs his teams like a dumb fan at the bar and not an NFL owner. It was only a matter of time before he decided Marrone wasn't a big enough name for his little hobby. There was talk he could opt out considering the above and I don't necessarily think it's because he knew he'd get the Jets job or tampering or anything. And he might not get it
In what way would hiring a HC with a career 5-27 record be the same as hiring Marrone? I do not understand this viewpoint at all. He had the Bills headed in the right direction after two years no?
