The writing has been on the wall for a long time, and now it's reality: the Jets have fired Rex Ryan. Second-year general manager John Idzik was also let go.

The pair were informed of their fate early Monday morning, the team announced.

The popular head coach brought the Jets out of relative obscurity in the world's biggest market back in 2009. He led New York to the AFC title game twice in his first two seasons, and even scored a book deal and contract extension, but he never reached the playoffs again.

The defensive-minded coach's time was marred by inconsistent quarterback play, a knock on his resume that he was never able to overcome despite going through several different coordinators. The team drafted two quarterbacks in the first or second round - Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith - neither of whom could buoy an offense strong enough to complement Ryan's dominant defenses. Ryan leaves the Jets with a 46-50 record.

Obviously doesn't come as a surprise to most of us, wonder which candidates get interviewed first.

My guess is all the assistant coaches would be gone as well, not sure about Bradway but no way he survives ANOTHER regime.

Rex tried harder than I've seen most coaches try. There were some great times. Thanks for it all and best wishes.

Idzik, you really screwed this 2014 roster, but at the same time, you grabbed the best QB, RB and WR in FA, drafted Richardson, who may be our best player, and traded for Harvin and Ivory, two great grabs. We may be furious at you now, but we head into 2015 with a high draft pick, and almost $50 million in cap space, which we have to spend per the CBA spending rules of 2012-2016.

The Jets have a bright future, and as much as most people hate Idzik, he set up the next GM nicely to succeed.

All of us "seasoned" Jets fans now brace ourselves for the next sorry chapter in this charlie brown story. Will it be quiet irrelevance or more circus bombast? Earnest incompetence? Or some new twist?

The scouts aren't going anywhere this off-season, there is not enough time for a GM to get his own scout team in place before the draft.

Why hasn't Bradway already been fired? I swear...if this talentless hack survives yet another regime change...

The house is cleaned. Bradway and the scouts won't be a part of the new regime and certainly the asst coaches will be looking for work too

Here's Woodys Offical Statement from the Jets website

After extensive thought and reflection about the current state of our football team, this morning I informed Rex Ryan and John Idzik that they will not be returning for the 2015 season. Both Rex and John made significant contributions to the team, and they have my appreciation and gratitude for their efforts and commitment. Over the years, Rex brought the Jets a bold confidence and a couple of great post-season runs, which all of us will remember.

I am beginning our search for new football leadership, effective immediately, with guidance and support from respected football experts, including Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, two Super Bowl winners with decades of valuable experience.

We will consider all options to improve the Jets.

Getting the Jets back on track is my top priority, and today’s decisions are important steps towards achieving our goals

This is sad, but it had to be done. Best of luck to Rex Ryan in the future, just not against the Jets. :)
