http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12089645/jim-harbaugh-san-francisco-49ers-mutually-agree-part-ways No need to overthink this. Give Harbaugh both jobs, give him whatever salary he wants, and let him build this team into a SB contender. You have a special coach available and all you have to do is beat out Michigan and Oakland.
Maybe unlike the pursuit of Manning, we can actually, I don't know, call the guy, instead of giving up without putting in any effort...
He's not worth 8 mil per season. Which is what the Wolverines are giving him. He had a good record at Stanford but he's not on the level of either Saban or Urban Meyer. Umich has deep pockets but they just fired a decent coach in Brady Hoke. And they'll fire Harbaugh too even though they'll be in for 50 mil.
He's going to Michigan lol He's set to meet with them and his wife and family is flying there this week. It's a done deal
Not sure why. Seriously, what does Michigan have going for it besides that its his alma mater? The Big 10 blows, Michigan can't out-recruit the big SEC teams nationally, the talent at Michigan is not great, and last I checked, being a successful NFL coach trumps being a college coach (hell, if Saban caught on at Miami, he would never have gone back to college). As for Oakland, they are a joke, and have been for a decade. Why, apart from location, would he ever want to coach Oakland?
That alone is a HUGE draw. Maybe he doesn't want to start over and turn around another shitty NFL team right now, whereas he knows if he can turn around his alma mater, he'll be a living god there. Plus the shitload of $$$ they're throwing at him, is there even one NFL coach making as much as Michigan is reportedly offering him? Maybe if some team was willing to pony up $10M a year, he'd reconsider, but I don't see that happening.
SF is releasing him because he's going to Michigan Why would SF expose themselves to monetary and professional loss, as well as the public relations nightmare, by allowing him to go to an NFL competitor without appropriate compensation. Can you imagine the outcry if the Jets did that.
We never had a chances he was either staying in the Bay area or going to Michigan. Maybe when he's ready to come back to the NFL and we fire the next set of guys coming in he'll be our guy.
Yeah, I don't get that as a draw. If my alma maters offered me jobs when I could get a better job, there is no chance that I would go back to either of my alma maters. I have to imagine that is the case with 90% of people, at least. The points you made are all valid, but I just don't see the appeal. Maybe if his alma mater was Florida and the job was available or Texas, I could see it (he can recruit against anyone at those jobs). But not Michigan. As for money, if that is what its about, I think Woody can afford to give him 50 mil over 5 years (especially since he would come here as Coach/GM in my scenario).
Or maybe the next set of guys will make us all say, "Damn, I'm glad that pleated, chino-wearing dick head went to Michigan and we got ________!"
Jim Harbaugh is scheduled to take a 10 AM PT flight on a private jet to #Michigan Monday morning, source tells @FoxSports.
I'm really surprised the Raiders didn't match the $8M and bank on his wife not wanting to leave the Bay Area. Now that's a truly hopeless franchise that needs a savior and they need him fast while their 2nd round QB isn't busting out.
