I have to say, after the last two weeks of watching Manning and Rodgers both have awful days against the Bills, I'm feeling more inclined to throw out Geno's own "worst QB ever" performance while evaluating him. Geno has regressed any way you slice it, but he's not as bad as he was against the Bills, even if his ceiling is still the type of play we saw yesterday. But moreso, the Bills worry me. These guys are looking more and more like us in '09 - a decent QB away from being a real contender. For reference, both Rogers and Manning's performances - -Less than 50% passes complete for Rodgers -Less than 200 yards for both -0 TDs for both -2 INTs for both
The Bills always find a way to lose the big game. If they beat the Pats to close out the season that will say something, but they won't.
The Bills have a damn good front 7 and this is WITHOUT Kiko Alonso, who comes back next year. They make so many QBs look terrible. This isn't just a Jets thing.
Geno is not where he should be and he deserves every criticism he gets. That being said, I'm still not sure if he's necessarily regressed (though I would have expected a bigger improvement since the skill players around him have improved.) *His completion % has increased from 55.8% to 57.8% between 2013 and 2014 * His interception % has declined from 4.7% to 3.8* * His Qb rating has increased from 66.5 to 69.8 * His sack % has decreased from 8.8% to 7.4% * Geno's biggest declines have come from yards per attempt and yards per completion; this just doesn't make sense b/c we have Decker and Harvin this year and it might show why Geno has no future in this league, but it also might come down to our OC. Not quite sure what to think about our worse offense with better players... source: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SmitGe00.htm
This is some good information, but I think that Geno in theory has much more to work with this year (Decker, Harvin, THEORETICALLY better run game), so the improvement is not really worth noting, form a guy I expected to be a "pretty good QB" this year. In reality though I think the rough Jets schedule shattered the guy's confidence. To lose seven in a row against all pretty great QBs, must have taken a toll on his confidence. I wouldn't count him out yet, though. Still expecting him to step up if he starts next year.
Geno hasn't regressed. He's not any worse this year than he was last year, in fact he probably had more decent games this year. However, he was the worst QB in the league last year, and had to improve significantly this year to show that he belonged. He hasn't done that. Bill have a really good defense now, and will be a pain to play in the future because of that, but overall, I don't see them going anywhere. Their current management is terrible. Last 2 years, they made 2 absolutely terrible decisions that will majorly impact them. In 2013, they drafted EJ Manuel in the first round. A lot of you guys think Idzik messed up on Geno, but he took him in the 2nd round, the Bills took Manuel, same type of flawed QB prospect in the first round, with a relatively high pick. Then this year, they spent 2 first rounders (high ones too as they are likely a non-playoff team both of those years) on a WR. Watkins might very well turn out to be a really good WR, but that is not a position worth 2 first rounders, especially when you have no QB. So to put it in context, these 3 years (2013, 2014, 2015), the Bills got Sammy Watkins out of 3 first round non-playoff picks. Everybody keeps saying we draft terribly, but in the same time frame, we got Richardson, Milliner, Pryor, and whoever we will pick this offseason (though we did have one extra pick over the Bills).
He had 4 games this year with 13 or fewer passing attempts, and a couple of games he sat, that will pad his stats...He's regressed.
Geno hasn't regressed. He's just not where we thought he should be in year 2. He's made slight improvements. He does things like step up in the pocket, go through progressions, use his legs but he's just so inconsistent. I don't think the book is written on Geno just yet, but based on what I've seen he looks like a backup quarterback. But when he's out there I root for him to play well.
That simply shows the coaching staff has little confidence in him. I admit the Bills game and the continued losses have contributed to his poor play and shattered confidence, but sitting behind Michael Vick doesn't tell us much about his throwing ability or potential. I'll be watching these last 2 games closely. I think it is likely that Geno is never good enough to start in this league, but it's not a guarantee. Geno could be an Alex Smith type. Who knows.
Did you miss yesterday's game? Everyone wants Geno to be the guy and end this QB hunt that's lasted 40 years, he's not. He's not half the QB Sanchez was for us. It costs us nothing to keep him, so sure he stays and maybe improves, but we still need someone to start next season, and it's not going to be Geno.
Something I admire about Geno is how we act like terrible outings destroy his confidence for the rest of his career, but in his head he still thinks he's a top 10 QB on a bad offense. Maybe he's delusional but maybe it's just a winners mentality, he's never given up on himself. Something I can't say about Sanchez. You knew towards the end of 2012 his confidence was shot and would rather be on a beach in LA. I'm in no way confident in Geno next year but I see a very realistic scenario he starts again next season, especially after losing the "Toilet Bowl"
Geno sucks you can't go out and discount any performance if you are then you are delusional. He is not a nfl qb it is pretty simple to see. The only thing we should admire about geno is his ability to hold a clipboard even then he should not be doing it in the green and white next year
Let's not kid ourselves. It's highly debatable whether Sanchez is any better than Smith. I'd say Smith actually has the edge. In terms of passing stats they're about the same (Smith may have the better arm), but Sanchez came with a lot of extra problems that hurt the team (additional turnovers via fumbles), while with Smith those are slightly less. Plus, Smith has occasionally made the different for us on getting conversions with his legs. Both guys have lost us several games. However, Smith accounted for a heck of a lot of our offense last year, and even won us some games. Sanchez never did that.
On one hand as a general matter I am in agreement that even teams with awful records and no shot to get into the playoffs should play with a purpose down the stretch. See what players compete, and which have given up. See if younger players in particular can improve with more game time. But let's be honest that such games often are poor indicators of actual improvement. We saw that last year with Smith, who benefitted from performances against the awful Raiders, a Miami team in disarray and a Browns team that looked like they were already mentally on the islands they were going to soon be on vacationing. Even then we could see his lower turnovers came at a cost of lower ypa and overall passing yards. Why are these last few games supposed to be any different? Sure NE is in a playoff hunt, but not so much yesterday's Tits, who are a truly awful team with a horrendous defense. By the last game an improved Miami is also likely out of hte playoffs, and we already saw those guys. I just don't see why this stretch should show us something that overcomes all we know already, especially about Smith.
Most glaring correctable things I see in Geno are his (1) play action ball fake, he does not sell the fake well at all. If he actually put a little more effort in selling run I think it could open up receivers and the passing game tremendously. I don't understand why we run the entire offense from shotgun..? I don't believe "Geno can't play from center" excuse. I think he has made it this far in his football career, he should be able to handle the snap/offense from under center. I know we call out Morningwhig a decent amount, but I still don't think he gets called out enough. (2) I think this offense would have a lot more success if it was run from under center with counters, traps and PA bootleg (the old Pennington - Martin offense). And I still think we should run the football a lot more. I would have liked to see more HB screens and powell too.
how wrong is this above. Smith is nowhere near the game manager Sanchez is/was. Is either great no they are not but Geno has thrown how many pick sixes in brief career? how many turn overs in his games started, then tell me about how bad Sanchez is again. Sanchez greatest fault was he never took the next step and plays to the level of the talent around him. Geno greatest fault is he is living turnover and has regressed. Last week people were saying he did well because he had one turn over and that was pick six 12 seconds in never mind the bills game where he had 3 turnovers in three plays. Geno has hit all time lows in actions to the fans, his delusion statements (probowl level flashes). It is time to move on from him I would even argue he is not a back up qb in this league because of his superpower of throwing interceptions
