All the QB's in this draft can spare to sit awhile, Hundley's no exception. I get the feeling ha can develop into a great qb, but only after some time. NOT top 10 quality but not a bad option in the event of a trade down.
I see him as a Jason Campbell, Derek Anderson type. He will start for a while, have some good moments and then eventually settle in as a backup.
If the new coaching staff plans on sitting Mariota and Winston right away, why not take Hundley or Cook in the next round instead? You still get a considerable talent to try and develop while taking a tackle or another elite talent in the 1st round. It's not like this team is a QB away from consistent playoff contention.
Highly unlikely Cook comes out and even so he's a first rounder (late first rounder at worst right now)
Ummm Andrew Luck? Two top 10 QBs are from California based colleges. So because a guy goes to school in California, we shouldn't draft him? Ridiculous.
No, I'm just saying you're writing off California QBs. For the record, I think Hundley sucks. But that's because Hundley sucks. Not because he goes to UCLA.
Fair point. I just think the track record of Cali based QB's is too big for us to ignore. Yeah you'll have your Luck's and Rodgers and Aikman's but you're much more likely to get a Marinovich, Leinart, Sanchez, McNown...and those are only 1st round guys Im thinking of. Im sure once we get past the 2nd round where Hundley is projected there arent many guys from Cali based schools that have been successful in the NFL. But either way I would feel the same way about Hundley if he went to Texas or Florida or somewhere else. He , like every other QB in this draft , I dont see making that big of a mark at the next level.
I think the Sanchez one is what stings still. But you can't ignore all the busts from everywhere else. Vince young, bradford, Russell, leaf, etc. If anything, I'm writing off USC QBs before other CA QBs because they're historically fool's gold. When Carson Palmer is the best you've given us (and first overall, right?), then I pause a bit. But every QB is different and we can't look at it that way. I mean, what's Oregon ever given the NFL? Harrington? Dennis Dixon? Clemens? Ugh. Would make you nervous about MM. But then again, we would have said the same about Cal, Miami (OH), Tennessee, etc. before some of these guys entered the league. You can't go by past successes and failures and have to evaluate the kid in a vacuum as best as you can. My vacuum says Hundley sucks anyway (couldn't resist the awful pun).
You're right in the end the skill set is what counts the most. And def the Sanchez fiasco is the most fresh in my mind so maybe Im a bit bias. I soured on USC QB's once Leinart became a bust. I figured if he couldn't succeed in the NFL no one coming out of that school would. But if there was a QB coming out of a Cali based school this year like Luck..or even a little below that level , then Id have no problem with the Jets taking him. But the way I see it if there isnt that low risk guy there then we shouldnt waste the pick..even if its on Hundley in the high 2nd early 3rd round. The mobile QB fad is ending fairly quickly. The Jets would be dumb to try and cash in at the end of it. But it would be a very Jets like move.
I would rather the Jets wait a round and take Bryce Petty. But either way the need a FA QB to start in 2015.
Or, if it turns out the Jets win a few games and fall back in the draft order, try to talk Connor Cook into coming out this year.
I personally don't want another "project" or "reach"at the QB position... That's the reason we suck... I don't have a problem with them drafting a QB in the later round but dam can our scouting dept. do their job and give these player correct grades on our draft board... dam if I was doing a crappy job like this for the company I work for I would have been giving the pink slip by now...
you dont think he would come out if he thought he would be a top 10 pick? can he be a top 10 pick this year?
Honestly, I don't know. I think at this time he's in the top 15-20 for sure, but I don't think he's a top 10 prospect right now in the eyes of scouts. I think if he has a great bowl game, good combine he could end up in the top 10, but that's one hell of a mountain to climb. I really like Cook as a pro-prospect, but some may believe he has less upside than Mariota / Winston.
In terms of QB prospects? He's listed as the #3 some credible sites even list him as the #1. I'm not sure id go that far but id be ecstatic to have Cook. Let him sit for a year and learn and bulk up just a bit and we have a shot at a real deal QB for once
