So, I watched the video with sound. Couple of things, the clip edits out some of the interaction between the deceased and the officers, which may contain critical events. This was a guy who was trying to talk himself out of being arrested. Whether or not he was ultimately guilty is irrelevant, perps don't get to decide whether they are going downtown or not. "I'm tired of you hassling me" isn't a get out of jail card, even if its justified. Still, based on what I saw, a first year law student should have been able to raise enough probable cause to get an indictment. What's going on here is that the grand jury system is being used to circumvent having a real trial with real evidence before a real jury of members of the community. Sad.
It must be nice to be a cop. Throw a flash grenade into a crib. Slam pregnant women down to the ground. Choke someone to death.
LIVE as in its happening RIGHT NOW http://new.livestream.com/accounts/124908/events/3634145 Awesome seeing people come together.
Even I though I think those numbers are very misleading and doesn't show everything that goes into answering if people are being targeted by the police, if we skip my opinion on it, it doesn't explain how you don't at least send this to trial. What, 99% of times we get past this stage and to a trial? Why dump evidence? Why not guide the grand jury? Why present the defense during the evidence? Just all questions that seems to have surprised more knowledgable law types. If this was the typical process and the grand jury didn't indict, then yeah the process was followed. These two recent ones seem like the process was massaged to get a result using supposedly unusual tactics for a prosecutor.
something about protesting I don't understand. You don't like profiling, none of those cops had a thing to do with any of it. Why are you walking around putting your hands in the air and aiming your comments at them as you walk by. Is that not profiling. And why do you have to clog a highway with people trying to get home for a long days work. go to a fukin park or something
While that link contains a stat showing 3x as many whites being shot by cops than blacks (326 vs. 123), there are 5x as many whites in terms of population. Further fwiw, Rep. Charlie Rangel this evening cited a Dept. of Justice stat that said black guys have a 21% greater chance of getting killed by a cop than a white guy. Total U.S. Population: 308,745,538 White: 223,553,265 Black: 38,929,319
If he complies with the officer he gets arrested, gets his day in court and most likely is still alive, instead he resisted. The officers were responding to a call from a shop owner who was complaining about Garner selling untaxed cigarettes again, were they to just say sorry, he doesn't want to be hassled today so we couldn't do anything. There are numerous other cases that are worthy of being investigated further where cops got off, this case and the Brown case, not so much. The cop in the Utah case was not charged.
Source? I've read many articles that said Garner broke up a fight and that is why NYPD was present in the first place. In one of the vids you hear one of the officers say that their attention is now directed at Garner, no longer the fight. I'm not saying you are wrong I just haven't heard that story told.
Without asthma ,this is a typical resist take down. Without the ailment, he lives. You can say they should have listened to him say I cant breathe, but they were probably thinking he was just trying to get them to lighten up. I don't believe you have a murder charge here, just like I also think the man did not deserve to die. I really wish the media would stop linking this and Ferguson. Actually,i wish the media would just stop.
I do think this should have been an indictment. The numbers speak to the narrative that blacks are being murdered by cops left and right.
We need to even out the ratio of people being killed by cops based on color. seems like about the same ratio as crimes committed? http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/uc...ables/43tabledatadecoverviewpdf#disablemobile
I am not saying any of these guys deserve to die but don't resist arrest and this isn't a possibility and even better would be not to commit crimes no matter how big or small they are. You break the law the police usually will come. but aren't black people committing more crimes therefore having more interaction w/ police or do we think that's all b/c they are profiled?
yes. see the link above. the ratio of people killed by cops is very similar to the ratio of crimes committed. it's almost as if it has nothing to do with color of skin. crazy, I know.
If you jaywalk and then refuse to cooperate with the police, forcing them to restrain you, then you don't get to act like you are an innocent victim and their response unreasonable.
