i guess you are right, you never really know until the bullets are flying (whether its from Dlineman, Manish, or this fan base)..

I'm a believer in QB's having a strong presence, and being a personality that the huddle believes in.
being mild mannered and young doesn't really fit with that description.

the flip side to that thought might be Eli Manning. While i don't think he is the best leader, he doesn't really get rattled.
The highs are never too big for him, and the lows never too crushing. He's on an even keel, which has benefited him in this critical market.

Either way, if we draft Mariota, i wouldn't want to start him right away. We'd need a more experienced vet like Hoyer to head into the season.
it would be best for Mariota to learn and mature in the NFL b4 going right out there.

In the year the Jets have the top pick we have a guy who is too nice and a guy who raped crab legs while yelling fuck her right in the pussy. Figures.

Mariota is your typical Hawaii local boy.

Whenever I pay attention to Eli, I detect a distinct LACK of personality. He's almost a non person. Not a robot, just not a guy. I guess that's what happens to the young kid when the dad is loud and the older brother is charismatic.

Yeah, I wish he was that type, I'd sign him up in a heartbeat. Although he'd probably end up sharing a jail cell with Johnny Football and Jamarcus Winston.

Fuck it. I'm starting to dig on Mariota. I've been worried about them drafting him, but the deeper I dig, the more I question my perception of him.

That's always the first sign that I'll be wrong years down the road, but fuck it anyway.

have to admit, i'm quite partial to the island players.
hard working, tough, team first guys for the most part. that's a plus for Mariota in my book..

Easily 90% of the island boys are from American Samoa, not Hawaii. They are worlds apart in terms of people.

Quiet, soft spoken, respectful, loyal, humble. Don't get me wrong every race has it's share of assholes and locals here get more of that stereotype than anything else. But I personally know and grew up with kids from here that are exactly like him.

One thing I want to know. There are a few Hawaiian restaurants in Oregon. What would you New Yorkers do to make him happy in NY. If he turns out to be the one?

Until they drink beer, lol. I knew a lot of good locals, and met ten times that amount who wanted to drive the haoles into the ocean.

    I guess I can't blame them, though.

Truth. Although Mariota has no history of character issues besides the speeding tickets and he doesn't strike me as one of those punch drunk locals. Went to one of the best private schools in the state, and grew up in a good area (Kaimuki, where I live). Humble hard working parents who don't leech off the system and are a good support for him.

If he came to the Jets I'd be stoked obviously because of bias. But still I'm not a fan of QB's that take majority of snaps from shotgun and not under center. Although he'd probably kill it in Chip Kelly's offense.

i realize i'm grouping polynesians into the same bucket in terms of culture and individual characteristics, which is never entirely accurate.

Many Samoan players were raised and/or educated in the states, and many Hawaiian bred players have Samoan backgrounds. This applies to Mariota, as do the characteristics i mentioned. maybe i'm being naive, but i don't see a huge difference in the type of players across the islands.
of course, you still need to evaluate individuals on a case by case basis, regardless of where they are from.
