While it should not be necessary, strictly speaking, I think as a practical matter the Jets will not get near a Super Bowl as long as Woodrow Johnson owns the team. Some will answer that they came close with Woodrow in 09 and 10. Even 08 if Favre had not gotten hurt. But that was before Woodrow did some things that caused irreparable damage. The basic problem is that he intermittently injects himself into football decisions, and has an insufficient background and knowledge to do so. This will hamstring any search for a future GM, for I think obvious reasons. In theory he could somehow announce that he is not going to meddle any more in team management, but realistically that is not going to happen. But short of that, which top candidate for the job will want to face future involvement by Woodrow? As a result the Jets will get only candidates who amount to the equivalent of sloppy seconds. Or thirds. Or worse. So my answer to the OP is to sell the team.
I would sell the team and just chill out the rest of my days. travel, have fun, buy some art, go get some great dinners, it would be awesome
If I was Woody, the first thing I would do is go driving down I-80 looking for billboards to see what fans think I should do.
Yeah. That's what Texas needs another pro football team. And yeah, the Ducks aren't popular. They kicked your a$$ last year.
Offense: 1. Find even a half assed QB (draft, sign) All this guy needs to be is a stand your ground pocket passer. 2. We need two guards. One legit starting starter to go opposite Oday and another that can push either push him or be only slightly worse. 3. Fix the skill positions. We need a TE that can block and catch to go with Amaro; Cumberland or Sudfield needs to take a hike. Johnson needs to go and we need to either commit to Powell as our two or draft somebody. The WR situation isn't too bad anymore so we don't "have" to draft Cooper. But we really need to look at getting a proper outside WR on the roster. 4. Restructure Brick and Harvin Defense 1. Get a CB, goes without saying. We need to slot down everybody we have by two but without investing a draft pick in a CB, AGAIN. 2. Get a FS, currently we have ZERO FS on the roster. I think having one would go a long ways to fixing our secondary. 3. Get a pass rushing OLB Move Davis into Harris spot and move Harris out. 4. 4-3 defense and put Coples on the line. I know our guys don't fit a prototypical 4-3 but I think they are talented enough to get it.
California has three teams and is a third the size of Texas. Texas is a fountain of football and has two, and only one has ever achieved significance. You're talking about Portland, Oregon. And Vancouver and Washington state. You might as well suggest Montana and Maine get teams while you are at it. And stop thinking I care about Texas NCAA teams, I'm from Jersey.
The only need that Woody needs to do is tell Idzik as GM you are free to fire anyone and everyone you see fit. You have full autonomy to hire the the next HC and anyone else in the organization. I will stay out of your way, your locker room, your practice fields etc. I will stay out of the media. sit in my owner's box and sign the checks. I actually have faith that Idzik can actually do the job and has never been actually been given enough of the reigns to do it.( but if you don't then - hire a new GM and then everything else is the same)
I would bring in Brian Kelly or Gus Malzahn to be the HC, promote Dunbar to DC. Bring in an OC of our HC's choice. Idzik will probably stay, but if he goes my choice would be Eric DeCosta, assistant to Ozzie Newsome. Sign Revis, he would be a good mentor to McDougle and Milliner. I would also look to sign an OLB in FA as well as a guard. Draft OL in the first or Mariota/Cooper. Second round you take whatever we didn't in the first.
The question is: is Woody tired of owning the team and does it make sense financially to sell now. I could just see the Dolans finally buying the team and Isiah Thomas being the GM.
Unlike some...LOVE the post(s)!! I love a well thought out and organized set of thoughts!!! I agree with almost everything...save for one point and then a couple observations... Point one...I HAVE to....NEED to....MUST know if Jameis is guilty of one or many of these "supposed" infractions. If he's guilty of certain ones it won't matter WHAT the NY Media has to say...he'll be in prison because he won't have the long arm of FSU to buy off and milk the police. So that is number one in your plan that must be answered. Having said that...I actually do not hate the Kyle Shanahan talk. He's not an ass munch or doofus like his dad. I could easily see that happening. Dunbar doesn't stay unless he's promoted to DC...you can take that one to the bank because he'll follow Ryan wherever he goes. As far as GM goes...I'm dead on in agreement here. Idzik wouldn't know talent if it creeped up and smacked him across the eyes. Sure as shit someone doesn't know talent. 12 draft picks this year and we almost have "nothing" to show for it. That doesn't fly in my book. To be quite honest...I'd give, and don't laugh, Mangini a call. He actually had an O.K. eye for talent. I don't know. Much like the OP I'm not going to say I know all the available GM types out there but what I can say is Idzik is NOT they guy.
Michael Kay brought up a good point today about possibly hiring a guy like Polian, Parcells, whoever to come in and be a consultant and help Woody and Co. pick the next GM. This is of couse, if they decide to fire Idzik. I'm not endorsing any of those guys in particular but just the idea of hiring a well respected "football guy" to come in and find the next GM.
^That's what I've been saying on here for last few months. Woody should be on the phone with a Polian right now just as a consultant. Let Polian tell him who to target as the next GM of the team. Or Polian may tell him to go after a big name HC who will also act as GM/Head of Football Ops. Either way, Woody should be seeking advice on how to rebuild this thing from a proven football winner.
The only serious charge leveled against Winston is rape. No charges so far but a lot of people including some reporters think the authorities in Tallahassee are trying to sweep it under the rug because he's a good football player. As a sports fan I don't want to personally despise my teams players esp the Qb. There are more important things than winning but not too many. I don't think I could root for this guy.
Woody isnt selling the team. Why would he when he's making money win loss or tie. Makes zero sense. What he does need to do is get people that know football to take over the front office. No more cap guys. No more glorified accountants. Overhaul the scouting department. If Rex goes then Rex goes. Cant defend him anymore even though I dont think anyone can win with the garbage thats been given to him this season. If we get a top 3 pick and Marriotta is there we call up Philly and see what they have to offer us. Chip Kelly wants Mariota as his QB. No secret there. They would give up a ton to get him. And we need a ton in return. Similar to what the Browns got from Atlanta for Julio and what the Rams got for RG3.
See...I'm your page... I have my ear to the ground on this one. It's been lingering a bit too long to have been a "misunderstanding" too. There is some "legs" to this story as far as I can see. Not sure I could root for him either.
