I think there are guys out there who would be able to utilize them. I was just saying I'd really love to get Matt Patricia in here, he has experience with a versatile defense. The Patriots have regularly played different defensive schemes based on changing personnel while he was there.
Jets lack true linebackers anyway - and will have to draft them to fill the hole. As long as Dunbar remains on board [which he will] the DL won't miss a beat. There are some talents in the secondary [Milliner and Pryor to name a few] so Jets will have to address the hole there through either FA or draft. [Draft should be the way to go.] In short, Jets won't be missing too much - unless you miss the 90 yard drive on your defense that much. On top of that - they don't force many turnovers. So that has to improve. Right?
They played in schemes similar to pro style before they got here, it's not like Rex just found a group of elite misfits who could only play in his defense. Both Sheldon and Mo could be elite 3Ts in a 4-3 and both could be elite DEs in a standard 3-4. And Rex isn't the only defensive playcaller that shifts alignments. He may be the only one that has no trust in his insanely talented line, though. He sends a jailbreak all day long with one of the most talented Dlines in the league. Who does that? And why can't it be replaced?
Sure, I guess. We've also had eight 3 game losing streaks, and now, one 4 game losing streak. And we're 15-25 in our last 40 games.
Of course they played in pro styles before they got here, but if you look at them, they are misfits. How do you fit Wilkerson, Richardson, Harrison ad Coples in a scheme? They work really well in a 46, but it's no base defense. Don't get me wrong, they're versatile, but I'd like to see them at their bests. He needs to stop with the blitzes. We get enough pressure with 4.
Coples is a pro 4-3 strong side rusher. Mo is a 4-3 3T that can play pretty much any technique in a 3-4, Sheldon can play nose in a pinch, but he could be a real force at 3T in a 4-3 and also play both ends in a 3-4, Harrison is a classic nose in both schemes. They are a versatile bunch of fuckers. So much so that we don't really need to send a blitz, but Rex keeps doing it. Then we have Douzable who can play all end techniques, and Ellis who is cheap and a good backup for both inside techniques in 4-3 and nose for 3-4. None of them are at their best right now because teams are bunching in max protect because Rex is paranoid about his pass defense. It's fucking sad. And it's why we always get blocked (or held, if you like) in the second half of games. Edit: And I'm guessing that you will ask about multiple players at the same position, and it's simple. Trade Coples to the highest bidder at the end of the season. No matter what the "hey you haven't paid attention to games" crowd says, the guy is one dimensional and he's also an easy way to find a sucker team. 4-3 Wilk+Pace+Dous/Harrison+Ellis/Rich+Wilk/Babin+Barnes+Douz 3-4 Rich+Wilk+Douz/Harrison+Eliis/Wilk+Rich+Douz Coples has been the oddball for a couple of years, he's the real misfit, but since dumb teams with high mid round picks love huge guys with high measurables and average stats, dump him when possible.
Are you kidding? easily. Hell you could switch to a 4-3 zone Tampa 2 if you wanted and that's a very good front 4. -Coples you could make an argument that Rex is using him wrong. The whole league saw him as a hands down DE, Rex is the only one that wanted him as an OLB and honestly, he isn't lighting the world up at it. And he's terrible in coverage. He doesn't look naturally comfortable in the position he's playing. -Richardson is the two gap DL that a 4-3 coach would LOVE. He's the prototype for that position. He's the player the Jets desperately wanted when they traded up for Dwayne Robertson. He would be deadly playing the Warren Sapp type DLmen. Right now he's being asked to eat up blocks and hold his spot very often for the LBs to take care of things. In a different scheme, he could be free to rush the backfield more. -Wilkerson is the only guy who was born to play the role he's playing. He's Trevor Pryce. But he's obviously got some versatility considering he does bounce inside and outside already along the line.
I totally agree with you. If Andy Reid was our coach we'd be near the playoffs. But no veteran coach in his right mind would choose is without a respected GM. Idzik has had finger on Quinn since he was hired. His major experience, one year as the Seahawks DC.
This has steelers written all over it. They love olbs. Unfortunately for them, it's no farrior, but still could be enticing for them. I think Pitt would bite on coples.
In an alternate universe where we had to trade one of them and we trusted our GM to not fuck up a first round pick, Wilkerson would be the one I would trade. He would garner the highest return in terms of compensation, at least a 1st if not more. We would continue to retain our cap flexibility by not having a lot of money tied up in interior defensive linemen. Remember Rich will need to be locked up at some point too. You have to give something to get something; buy low and sell high is what I say. 4-3 Alignment SS DEs Coples, Douz 3T DT Rich NTs/NGs Harrison, Ellis WS DE Babin, Barnes, FA (Hardy?), Draft pick
Pitt likes the quick off the snap undersized OLBs (6-0 to 6-2, 240 - 260 lbs) with low center of gravity a la James Harrison, Brandon Graham, Jarvis Jones, Arthur Moats, Jason Worilds…etc. Coples as an OLB is a big lumbering strong at the POA type more in the mold Bellicheat likes his OLBs.
